DIE SON KOM STADIG OP

Sing vir my ‘n lied
dat ek kan verstaan
waarom draai die lewe
as dit stil gaan staan

By die venster wag die son
op ‘n helder oggenduur
wat sal daardie dag nou bring
sal dit die lewe dalk versuur

Kan ek my oë oopmaak
en kyk wat vir my wag

He is Everywhere

He goes out of the school for a quick fag
and comes back to the class to tell a gag.
His tail around the powers he doesn't wag
and to snag the awards he carries no bag.

The officers often choose the weak to nag
but about his talents his students would brag.
Dares to scare him even an immoral hag
for the average results by this poor dag.

Some vandals too question him and rag,
into the mire, him they try to drag.
To fight for the good pay, he doesn't lag.
He welcomes the learned, his teaching to slag.

Seeking solace to mind, he sits calm on a crag.
But in the classroom, he is always a wag.

They only feel real when...

‘they only feel real when
pretending to be themselves…’

sometimes, psychology and poetry and philosophy
come close together; and like a dog
meeting another dog for the first time,
we’re cautious – that statement has legs
and claws and teeth … do we want to meet it,
might it be more fierce than it looks,
is it that ‘too much truth’ which mankind - says poor Tom -
cannot bear?

our tails quarter-wag, wag and stop,
our weight’s on our back legs,
caution is advised..

we’ll back away right now,
wait for the next meeting;
meanwhile, there’s always the tree to sniff,
a sharp reminder of the bone we’ll gnaw,

‘Wag kang yumuko, kaibigan
lumakad ka sa ilalim ng buwan
at maligo sa kanyang liwanag
at wag mong itago ang iyong
anino na nais lamang sumayaw
sa kanyang maamong sinag

Lumakad ka sa apoy at
maligo ka sa nyebe, isuot
ang iyong pinaka-magarang

The Keys of Morning

While at her bedroom window once,
Learning her task for school,
Little Louisa lonely sat
In the morning clear and cool,
She slanted her small bead-brown eyes
Across the empty street,
And saw Death softly watching her
In the sunshine pale and sweet.

His was a long lean sallow face;
He sat with half-shut eyes,
Like a old sailor in a ship
Becalmed 'neath tropic skies.
Beside him in the dust he had set
His staff and shady hat;
These, peeping small, Louisa saw
Quite clearly where she sat -
The thinness of his coal-black locks,
His hands so long and lean

Panaginip

Nagtitipon na ang puso ko 'pag ako'y inaantok
Wala na 'kong pakialam kahit papakin pa ng lamok
Kahit mainit, malamig basta't napasandal
Dire-diretso na ang tulog kahit bumarandal

Well, okey lang, alam ko naman na magkikita pa naman

The Soldier Birds

I mind the river from Mount Frome
To Ballanshantie’s Bridge,
The Mudgee Hills, and Buckaroo,
Lowe’s Peak, and Granite Ridge.
The “tailers” in the creek beneath,
The rugged she-oak boles,
The river cod where shallows linked,
The willowed water-holes.
I mind the blacksoil river flats,
The red soil levels, too,
The sidings where below the scrub
The golden wattles grew;
The track that ran by Tierney’s Gap,
The dusk and ghost alarms,
The glorious morning on the hills,
And all the German farms.
