I Am But A Small Voice

(r. whittaker/d. batnag)
Akoy munting tinig
May munting pangarap
Samyo ng bulaklak
Sa hanging malinis
May ngiti sa araw
At kung umuulan
Makapagtampisaw
Malayang daigdig
Ng kawalang malay
I am but a small voice
I am but a small dream
The fragrance of a flowr
In the unpolluted air
I am but a small voice
I am but a small dream
To smile upon the sun
Be free to dance and sing
Be free to sing my song to evryone
Chorus:
Come young citizens of the world
We are one, we are one
Come young citizens of the world
We are one, we are one
We have one hope
We have one dream
And with one voice
We sing...
Coda:
Peace, prosperity
And love for all mankind
Peace, prosperity
And love for all mankind
(instrumental)
I am but a small voice
I am but a small dream
To smile upon the sun
Be free to dance and sing
Be free to sing my song to evryone
Come young citizens of the world
We are one, we are one
Come young citizens of the world
We are one, we are one
We have one hope
We have one dream
And with one voice
We sing, we sing
Peace, prosperity
And love for all mankind
Peace, prosperity

Laking Marikina, Part 2

Isang paraiso no'n ang Ilog Marikina
Daming binubuhay, daming umaasa

BINGWIT

Bingwit or Fishing Rod, parehong may pain
Pain namin no'n ay hipon at bulate
Sari-saring isda ang nangahuhuli
Biya, hito, kanduli, minsa'y bakule
Bingwit ay di pare-pareho ang gamit
Merong sa tubig lang ay inilalawit
Merong hinihila matapos ihagis
Para ng isda ang pain ay mapansin
Akala niya'y buhay, agad sasagpangin
Ang tawag namin sa ganitong paraan
Ay di namimingwit, kundi nanggagalay

PATUKBA

Na Tian Piet's Sha'er Of The Late Sultan Abu Bakar Of Johor

In the name of God, let his word begin:
Praise be to God, let praises clear ring;
May our Lord, Jesus Christ's[8] blessings
Guide my pen through these poetizings!

This sha'er is an entirely new composition
Composed by myself, no fear of imitation.
It's Allah's name, I will keep calling out
While creating this poem to avoid confusion.

This story I'm relating at the present moment
I copy not, nor is it by other hands wrought;
Nothing whatsoever is here laid out
That hereunder is not clearly put forth.

Not that I am able to create with much ease,
To all that's to come I'm yet not accustomed;
Why, this sha'er at this time is being composed
Only to console my heart which is heavily laden.

I'm a peranakan[9], of Chinese origin,
Hardly perfect in character and mind;
I find much that I can not comprehend,
I'm not a man given to much wisdom.

Na Tian Piet[10] is what I go by name
I have in the past composed stories and poems;
Even when explained to - most stupid I remain
The more I keep talking the less I understand.

I was born in times gone by
In the country known as Bencoolen[11];
Indeed, I am more than stupid:
Ashamed am I composing this lay.

Twenty-four years have gone by
Since I moved to the island of Singapore;
My wife and children accompanied me
To Singapore, a most lovely country.

I stayed in Riau[12] for some time
Together with my wife and children;
Two full years in Riau territory,
Back to Singapore my legs carried me.

At the time when Acheh[13] was waging war
I went there with goods to trade,
I managed to sell them at exhorbitant prices:
Great indeed were the profits I made.

Kung Fu Fighting (dance Remix)

Oh Oh Oh Ooooh
Ya'll ready?
Oh Oh Oh Ooooh
Yeah.
Let's Go!
Oh Oh Oh Ooooh
Now here it is, want to make you move
something with a funky Kung Foo groove
something that will make you shout
make you play to the crowd
and make you want to turn it out
so homies gather 'round (right 'round)
i'll pick you up take you on go pound-for-pound
'cuz i'm the only man who'll please ya
i got a little something that'll tease ya
so throw those hands up high (come on)
shake your body move from side to side (thats right)
cuz we just begun party people in the place yeah we're having fun
oh yeah i'm gonna be a big star
i'm gonna lay it on and go woo-hah
cuz when the mood gets exciting (come on)
when everybody's Kung Foo fighting
(Chorus)
Everybody was Kung Fu Fighting - hunh (come on, hoo-hah)
Those kids were fast as lighhing - ha (woo-chop)
In fact it was a little bit frightening - hunh (huh-huh-huh)
But they fought with expert timing. - ha
Sing it girl
Sexy Kung Foo Fighter
Let me take you higher
i got the moves baby
sing kung foo fighter
take you higher
Aaaaw yeah!
There's bright lights on and no cold flow (so what?)
A kung foo fighter in a disco
he's out to take his chance
he goes for honeys in the house and he goes for romance (he's on the floor)
he's got a white suit on fight pants on and the night has just begun
cuz when he lays it on with style
a ladies man with a nice smile
and right befroe his eyes
sees a pretty young thing looking real fly (so fly)
he wants to make the score
so he takes her hand and leads her to the dance floor
he's giving her line after line
she tells him that he looks real fine
she sees the man's perfect timing
just like when he's kung foo fighting
(chorus)

Canto XIII: Kung Walked

Kung walked
by the dynastic temple
and into the cedar grove,
and then out by the lower river,
And with him Khieu Tchi
and Tian the low speaking
And ``we are unknown," said Kung,
``You will take up charioteering?
``Then you will become known,
``Or perhaps I should take up charioterring, or archery?
``Or the practice of public speaking?''
And Tseu-lou said, ``I would put the defences in order,''
And Khieu said, ``If I were lord of a province
``I would put it in better order than this is.''
And Tchi said, ``I would prefer a small mountain temple,
``With order in the observances,
with a suitable performance of the ritual,''
And Tian said, with his hand on the strings of his lute
The low sounds continuing
after his hand left the strings,
And the sound went up like smoke, under the leaves,
And he looked after the sound:
``The old swimming hole,
``And the boys flopping off the planks,
``Or sitting in the underbrush playing mandolins.''
And Kung smiled upon all of them equally.
And Thseng-sie desired to know:
``Which had answered correctly?''
And Kung said, ``They have all answered correctly,
``That is to say, each in his nature.''
And Kung raised his cane against Yuan Jang,
Yuan Jang being his elder,
For Yuan Jang sat by the roadside pretending to
be receiving wisdom.
And Kung said
``You old fool, come out of it,
``Get up and do something useful.''
And Kung said
``Respect a child's faculties
``From the moment it inhales the clear air,
``But a man of fifty who knows nothng
Is worthy of no respect.''
And "When the prince has gathered about him
``All the savants and artists, his riches will be fully employed.''
And Kung said, and wrote on the bo leaves:
If a man have not order within him
He can not spread order about him;
And if a man have not order within him
His family will not act with due order;
And if the prince have not order within him

Who Dares To Take This Life From Me, Knows No Better

I

An important thing in living
Is to know when to go;
He who does not know this
Has not far to go,
Though death may come and go
When you do not know.

Come, give me your hand,
Together shoulder and cheek to shoulder
We'll go, sour kana in cheeks
And in the mornings cherry sticks
To gum: the infectious chilli smiles
Over touch-me-not thorns, crushing snails
From banana leaves, past
Clawing outstretched arms of the bougainvillea
To stone the salt-bite mangoes.

Tread carefully through this durian kampong
For the ripe season has pricked many a sole.

II

la la la tham'-pong
Let's go running intermittent
To the spitting, clucking rubber fruit
And bamboo lashes through the silent graves,
Fresh sod, red mounds, knee stuck, incensing joss sticks
All night long burning, exhuming, expelling the spirit.
Let's scour, hiding behind the lowing boughs of the hibiscus
Skirting the school-green parapet thorny fields.
Let us now squawk, piercing the sultry, humid blanket
In the shrill wakeful tarzan tones,
Paddle high on.the swings
Naked thighs, testicles dry.

Let us now vanish panting on the climbing slopes
Bare breasted, steaming rolling with perspiration,
Biting with lalang burn.
Let us now go and stand under the school
Water tap, thrashing water to and fro.
Then steal through the towkay's
Barbed compound to pluck the hairy
Eyeing rambutans, blood red, parang in hand,
And caoutchouc pungent with peeling.
Now scurrying through the estate glades
Crunching, kicking autumnal rubber leavings,
Kneading, rolling milky latex balls,
Now standing to water by the corner garden post.

Munting Paraiso

Munting paraiso,
puno ng halakhak
ng mga munting anghel
sa harding kinulayan
ng iba't-ibang kulay
ng mga bukaklak.

Sa gabi'y
ang harana ng ama
sa kanyang gitara,
habang sa mainit
na dibdib ng ina'y
mga munting hilik
ng mga munting anghel.

Munting paraiso,
kailan nga ba huling
nasilayan? ....

Nang ang baya'y sinakop
ng kahirapan
harana ng ama'y
hindi na narinig,
at kasama ng inang
hapo din ang katawan
mga bibig ay nakanganga
sa kanilang pagtulog,
habang ang kanilang
dating mga munting anghel
ay sa lansangan
pagala-gala.

Munting paraiso,
aah, munting paraiso
minsan pa, nais kitang
masilayan.

Panaghoy

Aanhin ko
ang lahat ng yaman sa mundo
kung dito ay wala
ni isa mang kasalo.

Aanhin ko
ang pinakamataas na karangalan
kung dito ay walang
mapag-aalayan.

Aanhin ko
ang makapiling ka
kung ang isinisigaw ng iyong puso
ay hindi ako.

Aanhin ko
ang aking magandang tinig
kung wala ditong
makikinig.

Aanhin ko
ang aking mga tula
kung wala ditong
tutula.

Aanhin ko
ang mabuhay
kung aking saysay
ay maitutulad sa hanging
walang nakakakita.

Oh, poon ng mga poon
bakit pa ako'y nilalang
kung ika'y walang gagawin
kundi ako'y pagtaghuyin.

Epilogue

(THE GRAVEYARD OF SPOON RIVER. TWO VOICES ARE HEARD BEHIND A SCREEN DECORATED WITH DIABOLICAL AND ANGELIC FIGURES IN VARIOUS ALLEGORICAL RELATIONS. A FAINT LIGHT SHOWS DIMLY THROUGH THE SCREEN AS IF IT WERE WOVEN OF LEAVES, BRANCHES AND SHADOWS.)

FIRST VOICE

A game of checkers?

SECOND VOICE

Well, I don't mind.

FIRST VOICE

I move the Will.

SECOND VOICE

You're playing it blind.

FIRST VOICE

Then here's the Soul.

SECOND VOICE

Checked by the Will.

FIRST VOICE

Eternal Good!

SECOND VOICE

And Eternal Ill.

FIRST VOICE

I haste for the King row.

SECOND VOICE

Save your breath.

FIRST VOICE

I was moving Life.

SECOND VOICE

You're checked by Death.

Hi Tech

Kaming 'pinanganak noong ninteeen thirty's
At swerteng narating ang idad seventies

Ang tula na ito nang aking sulatin
Sign pen ang ginamit, substitute ay ballpen
Final draft, tinapos sa aking computer
Malinis na kopya'y ginawa sa printer

Extra copy nito'y puwedeng ipadala
Attachment sa email, by fax at meron pa
Surface mail at airmail, kundi kuntento ka
By Fedex, LBC, hari ng padala

Ang maraming kopya, paano gagawin
Noon ay photostat, masyadong maitim
O kaya'y mimeograph, a very messy thing
Tinta'y kumakalat sa pag-i-stencil
Ngayon nama'y xerox, pagkopya'y matulin

Tulay o messenger, kelangang gumamit
Resultang madalas, sulat maintercept

'God Knows Hudas Not Pay', paskel, nakadikit
'Upong Diyes lamang po', laging sinasambit
Ng tsuper na kundi mabait-masungit

Mga bata noon, hilig ay mangisda
'Fighting fish' naman ang sa mga matanda

The House Of Dust: Complete

I.

The sun goes down in a cold pale flare of light.
The trees grow dark: the shadows lean to the east:
And lights wink out through the windows, one by one.
A clamor of frosty sirens mourns at the night.
Pale slate-grey clouds whirl up from the sunken sun.

And the wandering one, the inquisitive dreamer of dreams,
The eternal asker of answers, stands in the street,
And lifts his palms for the first cold ghost of rain.
The purple lights leap down the hill before him.
The gorgeous night has begun again.

'I will ask them all, I will ask them all their dreams,
I will hold my light above them and seek their faces.
I will hear them whisper, invisible in their veins . . .'
The eternal asker of answers becomes as the darkness,
Or as a wind blown over a myriad forest,
Or as the numberless voices of long-drawn rains.

We hear him and take him among us, like a wind of music,
Like the ghost of a music we have somewhere heard;
We crowd through the streets in a dazzle of pallid lamplight,
We pour in a sinister wave, ascend a stair,
With laughter and cry, and word upon murmured word;
We flow, we descend, we turn . . . and the eternal dreamer
Moves among us like light, like evening air . . .

Good-night! Good-night! Good-night! We go our ways,
The rain runs over the pavement before our feet,
The cold rain falls, the rain sings.
We walk, we run, we ride. We turn our faces
To what the eternal evening brings.

Our hands are hot and raw with the stones we have laid,
We have built a tower of stone high into the sky,
We have built a city of towers.

Our hands are light, they are singing with emptiness.
Our souls are light; they have shaken a burden of hours . . .
What did we build it for? Was it all a dream? . . .
Ghostly above us in lamplight the towers gleam . . .
And after a while they will fall to dust and rain;
Or else we will tear them down with impatient hands;
And hew rock out of the earth, and build them again.

Nandito Ako

(aaron paul del rosario)
Mayroon akong nais malaman
Maaari bang magtanong
Alam mo bang matagal na kitang iniibig
Matagal na kong naghihintay
Ngunit mayroon kang ibang minamahal
Kung kayat akoy di mo pinapansin
Ngunit ganun pa man nais kong malaman mo
Refrain:
Nandito ako umiibig sa iyo
Kahit na nagdurugo ang puso
Kung sakaling iwanan ka niya
Huwag kang mag-alala
May nagmamahal sa iyo
Nandito ako
Kung ako ay iyong iibigin
Di kailangan ang mangamba
Pagkat ako ay para mong alipin
Sa iyo lang wala nang iba
Ngunit mayroon kang ibang minamahal
Kung kayat akoy di mo pinapansin
Ngunit ganun pa man nais kong malaman mo
Huwag kang mag-alala
May nagmamahal sa iyo
Nandito ako
Nandito ako umiibig sa iyo
Kahit na nagdurugo ang puso
Kung sakaling iwanan ka niya
Huwag kang mag-alala
May nagmamahal sa iyo
Nandito ako
Nandito ako...

Sa Ugoy Ng Duyan

(l. san pedro/l. celerio)
Oh! inay

Hari Ng Tondo

Kahit sa patalim kumapit
Isang tuka isang kahig

Umaabusong kikilan
Ang lahat ng pumalag
Walang tanong
Ay kitilan ng buhay
Hukay, luha'y magpapatunay
Na kahit hindi makulay
Kailangang magbigay-pugay
Sa kung sino mang lamang
Mga bitukang halang
At kung wala kang alam
Ay yumuko ka nalang
Hanggang sa may nagpasya
[ Lyrics from:
Kahit sa patalim kumapit
Isang tuka isang kahig

Book IV - Part 03 - The Senses And Mental Pictures

Bodies that strike the eyes, awaking sight.
From certain things flow odours evermore,
As cold from rivers, heat from sun, and spray
From waves of ocean, eater-out of walls
Around the coasts. Nor ever cease to flit
The varied voices, sounds athrough the air.
Then too there comes into the mouth at times
The wet of a salt taste, when by the sea
We roam about; and so, whene'er we watch
The wormword being mixed, its bitter stings.
To such degree from all things is each thing
Borne streamingly along, and sent about
To every region round; and Nature grants
Nor rest nor respite of the onward flow,
Since 'tis incessantly we feeling have,
And all the time are suffered to descry
And smell all things at hand, and hear them sound.
Besides, since shape examined by our hands
Within the dark is known to be the same
As that by eyes perceived within the light
And lustrous day, both touch and sight must be
By one like cause aroused. So, if we test
A square and get its stimulus on us
Within the dark, within the light what square
Can fall upon our sight, except a square
That images the things? Wherefore it seems
The source of seeing is in images,
Nor without these can anything be viewed.

Now these same films I name are borne about
And tossed and scattered into regions all.
But since we do perceive alone through eyes,
It follows hence that whitherso we turn
Our sight, all things do strike against it there
With form and hue. And just how far from us
Each thing may be away, the image yields
To us the power to see and chance to tell:
For when 'tis sent, at once it shoves ahead
And drives along the air that's in the space
Betwixt it and our eyes. And thus this air
All glides athrough our eyeballs, and, as 'twere,
Brushes athrough our pupils and thuswise
Passes across. Therefore it comes we see
How far from us each thing may be away,
And the more air there be that's driven before,
And too the longer be the brushing breeze
Against our eyes, the farther off removed
Each thing is seen to be: forsooth, this work
With mightily swift order all goes on,
So that upon one instant we may see

Kaibigan

(jaypee garcia)
Hello kaibigan, kamusta ka na
Kay saya-saya muli kitang nakamusta
Mabuting kalagayan hangad ko sa yo
Kung akoy tanungin mabuti naman ako
Bridge 1:
Di pa rin nagbabago pagtingin sa yo
Di pagpapalit akoy hiyang dito
Hello kaibigan, kamusta ka na
Ibang-iba nga kung kilala mo na
Di ba mas natural, mas maganda
Kung hiyang talaga
(instrumental)
Bridge 2:
Ang nakasanayan mahirap ipagpalit
Magandang karanasan mahirap mawala
Hello kaibigan, kamusta ka na
Ibang-iba nga kung kilala mo na
Di ba mas natural, mas maganda
Kung hiyang talaga

Ang Hagdan ng Buhay

Ang buhay ay hagdan na bawat baitang
ay mayroong turo't iniiwang aral.
Sa dulo ng hagdan ako'y nakarating.
Anu-anong aral ba'ng naiwan sa 'kin?

Ang unang baitang, di ko namalayan
Ang aking paligid, hindi nawarian
Ako pa ay sanggol at kulang sa muwang
Ngunit kahit konti, na'y may natutunan

Laruang nawala, kaibigang lumayo
O kagat ng langgam ay pagkasiphayo
Napag-alaman ko na maari pa rin
Sa pag-iyak lamang, gusto'y maging akin
Sa konting sipag at pagkamasunurin
Mayroong gantimpalang sa aki'y darating

Ilang taon lamang ay nagulat ako
Ako ay isa nang taong binatilyo
Ang pagiging bata ay aking iniwan
Ako pala'y meron nang pananagutan
Sa mga kapatid, sa mga magulang
Sa ikabubuhay dapat nang tumulong
Ang pag-aaral na'y isang obligasyon
Sa tatag ng bukas ay isang pundasyon
Di lahat ng hiling pa ay makakamtan
Kailangang sila na ay pagpaguran

Sa pagkabinata ay aking nalaman
Ang pag-ibig pala'y sari-sari'ng taglay
May tamis, ligaya, hapis, kalungkutan
Pait o ligaya, bigo o tagumpay

Sa pagkabinata ko rin napagmasdan
Mga paruparo na nagliliparan
Sa mga bulaklak ay palipat-lipat
