From The Biography Of An Unknown Woman: Xxiii
every morning
she eagerly wakes up
every evening
she patiently waits
every evening
she retires in disappointment
an unending saga
of waiting is her
everyday ritual...

Everyday Is A Winding Road
{written by sheryl crow, jeff trott and brian mcleod}
{additional vocal by larry graham}
Everyday is a winding road, is a winding road, is a winding road, oh
(is a winding road)
I hitched a ride with a crazyhorse showgirl
She says shes been down this road more than twice (time)
She wanted 2 know if I could tell the future (tell the future)
I said, Ive never been there before, but the brochure looks nice
Jump in, lets go (lets go, baby)
Lay back, enjoy the show
Everybody gets high (high), everybody gets low (low)
These r the days when anything goes
Everyday is a winding road
I get a little bit closer
Everyday is a faded sign
I get a little bit closer 2 feeling fine
(oh-oh)
(listen now)
Shes got a daughter she calls easter
She was born on a tuesday night
Im just wondering y people feel so all alone (all alone)
Feeling like a stranger in their own life
Jump in, lets go (lets go, baby)
Lay back (ooh-ooh), enjoy the show
Everybody gets high (high), everybody gets low (low)
These r the days (days) when anything goes
Everyday is a winding road
I get a little bit closer
Everyday is a faded sign
I get a little bit closer 2 feeling fine
(jump in)
(everyday is a winding road, is a winding road)
Ive been swimming in a sea of anarchy
Ive been living on compliments and herbal tea
Ive been wondering if all the things Ive ever seen
Were ever real (were ever real, were ever real ...)
Were ever really happening
Jump in, lets go ([...] lets go, baby)
Lay back, enjoy the show
Everybody gets high, everybody gets low
These r the days when anything goes
Everyday is a winding road (come on, come on)
I get a little bit closer (get closer baby)

I get a little bit closer 2 feeling fine

Everydays The Same
It doesnt seem so long ago
That I was sitting at the edge of the desk
And now Im looking back with a smile
As I turn my back to success
And I laugh and I cry and ask myself why
Everyday they do the same
And I stop and I think for a minute each week
Do they always catch the train
Everyday, everyday, everyday seems to end this way
{ }
Everyday, everyday, everyday seems to end this way
{everday just seems the same}
It seems like only yesterday
That I was sitting at the edge of the desk
And now Im looking back with a smile
As I turn my back to success
And I laugh and I cry and ask myself why
Everyday they do the same
And I stop and I think for a minute each week

I Am Waiting
I am waiting for my case to come up
and I am waiting
for a rebirth of wonder
and I am waiting
for someone to really discover America
and wail
and I am waiting
for the discovery
of a new symbolic western frontier
and I am waiting
for the American Eagle
to really spread its wings
and straighten up and fly right
and I am waiting
for the Age of Anxiety
to drop dead
and I am waiting
for the war to be fought
which will make the world safe
for anarchy
and I am waiting
for the final withering away
of all governments
and I am perpetually awaiting
a rebirth of wonder
I am waiting for the Second Coming
and I am waiting
for a religious revival
to sweep through the state of Arizona
and I am waiting
for the Grapes of Wrath to be stored
and I am waiting
for them to prove
that God is really American
and I am waiting
to see God on television
piped’ onto church altars
if only they can find
the right channel
to tune in on
and I am waiting
for the Last Supper to be served again
with a strange new appetizer
and I am perpetually awaiting
a rebirth of wonder
I am waiting for my number to be called
and I am waiting
for the Salvation Army to take over

What You Waiting For?
What an amazing time.
What a family.
How did the years go by?
Now it's only me
Tick-tock
Tick-tock
Tick-tock
Tick-tock
Tick-tock
Tick-tock
Tick-tock
Tick-tock
La, la, la, la, la, la, la
Like a cat in heat stuck in a moving car
A scary conversation, shut my eyes, can't find the brake
What if they say that your a climber?
Naturally I'm worried if I do it alone
Who really cares cause it's your life?
You never know it could be great
Take a chance cause you might grow
Oh, oh ohhh
What you waiting
What you waiting
What you waiting
What you waiting
What you waiting for?
What you waiting
What you waiting
What you waiting
What you waiting
What you waiting for?
Tick-tock
Tick-tock
Tick-tock
Tick-tock
Take a chance you stupid hoe
Like an echo pedal you're repeating yourself.
You know it all by heart, why are you standing in one place?
Born to blossom, bloom to perish.
Your moment will run out 'cause of your sex chromosome.
I know its so messed how our society all thinks (for sure)
Life is short, your capable (uh-huh)
Oh, oh ohhh
Look at your watch now
You're still a super hot female
You got your million dollar contract
and they're all waiting for your hot track
What you waiting
What you waiting
What you waiting

Waiting For The Sunrise
Waiting for the sunrise,
Waiting for the sunrise,
Waiting for the sunrise,
Waiting for the sunrise,
So I can take your hand and stroll about.
Waiting for the sunrise,
Waiting for the sunrise,
Waiting for the sunrise,
Waiting for the sunrise,
So we can go on the streets and see the people smile.
Give me your hand,
So I could tell you that things will be alright.
The rooms still dark,
But it wont be so long,
And I can take you outside.
Waiting for the sunrise,
Waiting for the sunrise,
Waiting for the sunrise,
Waiting for the sunrise,
So we can go to the park and roll about.
Waiting for the sunrise,
Waiting for the sunrise,
Waiting for the sunrise,
Waiting for the sunrise,
So we can go to the docks and watch the boats go by.
Come on, love, give me your hand,
And things will be alright.
The rooms still cold,
But it wont be so long,
That we can go outside.
Waiting for the sunrise,
Waiting for the sunrise,
Waiting for the sunrise,
Waiting for the sunrise,
So I could see your hair shining in the air.
Waiting for the sunrise,
Waiting for the sunrise,
Waiting for the sunrise,
Waiting for the sunrise,
So I can see the sky reflected in your eyes.
Come on, love, dont be depressed,
Things will be alright.
The rooms too low,
But it wont be so long,
That we can be outside.
Waiting for the sunrise,
Waiting for the sunrise,
Waiting for the sunrise,
Waiting for the sunrise,
Waiting for the sunrise,

Pick me up, love!
(pick me up, love)
Hey, come on come on come on (everyday)
Everyday, ah
Pick me up, oh, from the bottom
Up to the top, love, everyday
Pay no mind to taunts or advances

Up and down, love

Jump in the mud, oh
Get your hands dirty with
Love it up on everyday
All you need is
All you want is
All you need is love.
All you need is
What you want is
All you need is love.

Get your hands filthy, love

Seasonable Retour-Knell
SEASONABLE RETOUR KNELL
Variations on a theme...
SEASONABLE ROUND ROBIN ROLE REVERSALS
Author notes
A mirrored Retourne may not only be read either from first line to last or from last to first as seen in the mirrors, but also by inverting the first and second phrase of each line, either rhyming AAAA or ABAB for each verse. thus the number of variations could be multiplied several times.- two variations on the theme have been included here but could have been extended as in SEASONABLE ROUND ROBIN ROLE REVERSALS robi03_0069_robi03_0000
In respect of SEASONABLE ROUND ROBIN ROLE REVERSALS
This composition has sought to explore linguistic potential. Notes and the initial version are placed before rather than after the poem.
Six variations on a theme have been selected out of a significant number of mathematical possibilities using THE SAME TEXT and a reverse mirror for each version. Mirrors repeat the seasons with the lines in reverse order.
For the second roll the first four syllables of each line are reversed, and sense is retained both in the normal order of seasons and the reversed order as well... The 3rd and 4th variations offer ABAB rhyme schemes retaining the original text. The 5th and 6th variations modify the text into rhyming couplets.
Given the linguistical structure of this symphonic composition the score could be read in inversing each and every line and each and every hemistitch. There are minor punctuation differences between versions.
One could probably attain sonnet status for each of the four seasons and through partioning in 3 groups of 4 syllables extend the possibilites ad vitam.

SPRING SUMMER
Life is at ease Young lovers long
Land under plough; To hold their dear;
Whispering trees, Dewdrops among,
Answering cow. Bold, know no fear.
Blossom, the bees, Life full of song,
Burgeoning bough; Cloudless and clear;
Soft-scented breeze, Days fair and long,
Spring warms life now. Summer sends cheer.
AUTUMN WINTER
Each leaf decays, Harvested sheaves
Each life must bow; And honeyed hives;
Our salad days Trees stripped of leaves,
Are ending now. Jack Frost has knives.
Fruit heavy lays Time, Prince of thieves,
Bending the bough, - Onward he drives,

Time
Time waits for nobody
Time waits for nobody
We all must plan our hopes together
Or we'll have no more future at all
Time waits for nobody
We might as well be deaf and dumb and blind
I know that sounds unkind
But it seems to me we've not listened to
Or spoken about it at all
The fact that time is running out for us all
Time waits for nobody
Time waits for no-one
We've got to build this world together
Or we'll have no more future at all
Because time - it waits for nobody
You don't need me to tell you what's gone wrong (gone wrong gone wrong)
You know what's going on
But it seems to me we've not cared enough
Or confided in each other at all (confided in each other at all)
It seems that we've all got our backs against the wall
(Time) Time waits for nobody
(Time) waits for no-one
We've got to trust in one another
Or there'll be no more future at all
(Time)
Yeah - Time waits for nobody
No no - Time don't wait for no-one
Let's learn to be friends with one another
Or there'll be no more future at all
Time (time) time (time) waits for nobody waits for nobody
Time time time time waits for nobody at all
Time waits for nobody - yeah
Time don't wait - waits for no-one
Let us free this world for ever
And build a brand new future for us all
Time waits for nobody nobody nobody
For no-one

The Reason And Cause For Their Pain
Everyday!
Everyday as if a ritual,
Someone is complaining...
About being misunderstood.
Everyday as if a ritual,
Fault is being made...
About someone else.
Everyday as if a ritual,
People are accused...
For something they didn't do.
Everyday!
Everyday as if a ritual,
Some believes they have the right...
To excuse themselves of responsibility.
And everyday,
Someone is left to feel alone...
Still not getting the connection,
Between their misdeeds...
Aches and pains.
And those heartbreaks they receive,
They have come to perceive...
No one else has known!
And everyday without fail,
As sure as the ticking of a clock is heard...
These people will not see themselves,
The reason and cause for their pain.

Evangeline: A Tale of Acadie
This is the forest primeval. The murmuring pines and the hemlocks,
Bearded with moss, and in garments green, indistinct in the twilight,
Stand like Druids of eld, with voices sad and prophetic,
Stand like harpers hoar, with beards that rest on their bosoms.
Loud from its rocky caverns, the deep-voiced neighboring ocean
Speaks, and in accents disconsolate answers the wail of the forest.
This is the forest primeval; but where are the hearts that beneath it
Leaped like the roe, when he hears in the woodland the voice of the huntsman
Where is the thatch-roofed village, the home of Acadian farmers,--
Men whose lives glided on like rivers that water the woodlands,
Darkened by shadows of earth, but reflecting an image of heaven?
Waste are those pleasant farms, and the farmers forever departed!
Scattered like dust and leaves, when the mighty blasts of October
Seize them, and whirl them aloft, and sprinkle them far o'er the ocean
Naught but tradition remains of the beautiful village of Grand-Pre.
Ye who believe in affection that hopes, and endures, and is patient,
Ye who believe in the beauty and strength of woman's devotion,
List to the mournful tradition still sung by the pines of the forest;
List to a Tale of Love in Acadie, home of the happy.
PART THE FIRST
I
In the Acadian land, on the shores of the Basin of Minas,
Distant, secluded, still, the little village of Grand-Pre
Lay in the fruitful valley. Vast meadows stretched to the eastward,
Giving the village its name, and pasture to flocks without number.
Dikes, that the hands of the farmers had raised with labor incessant,
Shut out the turbulent tides; but at stated seasons the flood-gates
Opened, and welcomed the sea to wander at will o'er the meadows.
West and south there were fields of flax, and orchards and cornfields
Spreading afar and unfenced o'er the plain; and away to the northward
Blomidon rose, and the forests old, and aloft on the mountains
Sea-fogs pitched their tents, and mists from the mighty Atlantic
Looked on the happy valley, but ne'er from their station descended
There, in the midst of its farms, reposed the Acadian village.
Strongly built were the houses, with frames of oak and of hemlock,
Such as the peasants of Normandy built in the reign of the Henries.
Thatched were the roofs, with dormer-windows; and gables projecting
Over the basement below protected and shaded the doorway.
There in the tranquil evenings of summer, when brightly the sunset
Lighted the village street and gilded the vanes on the chimneys,
Matrons and maidens sat in snow-white caps and in kirtles
Scarlet and blue and green, with distaffs spinning the golden
Flax for the gossiping looms, whose noisy shuttles within doors

Rock & Roll All Nite (live)
You show us everything you've got
You keep on dancin' and the room gets hot
You drive us wild, we'll drive you crazy
You say you wanna go for a spin
The party's just begun, we'll let you in
You drive us wild, we'll drive you crazy
You keep on shoutin', you keep on shoutin'
I wanna rock and roll all nite and party everyday
I wanna rock and roll all nite and party everyday
I wanna rock and roll all nite and party everyday
I wanna rock and roll all nite and party everyday
You keep on saying you'll be mine for a while
You're lookin' fancy and I like your style
You drive us wild, we'll drive you crazy
You show us everything you've got
Baby, baby that's quite a lot
And you drive us wild, we'll drive you crazy
You keep on shoutin', you keep on shoutin'
I wanna rock and roll all nite and party everyday
I wanna rock and roll all nite and party everyday
I wanna rock and roll all nite and party everyday

Still Waiting
All my friends tell me
About the loves theyve had
Cant they see what theyre doing to me?
It makes me feel so bad
cause Im so alone
And brokenhearted
It aint like my life is ended
But more like it never started
The love my friends rap about I keep anticipating
I try so hard but dont you know, my patience is fading away
Still waiting
Im waiting for that love
Still waiting
I wish on every star above
Still waiting
Waiting for the love to come around
Oh, love.
Waiting for the love to come around
People say that Im too young
Too young to fall in love
But they dont know, they really dont know
Thats all that Ive been dreaming of
cause I spend my nights just a-crying
And I spend my days just a-trying
To find that love to call my own
cause Im sick and tired of being alone
Still waiting
Waiting for that love
Still waiting
I wish on every star above
Still waiting
Im waiting for the love to come around.
(waiting for the love) dont you know that Im waiting
(waiting for the love) say..
(waiting for the love) to come around now
I need somebody to hold on to baby
Waiting and waiting, dont you know that im
Still waiting
Im waiting for the love, sugar
Still waiting
If youre out there girl, please come to me
Still waiting
Dont make me cry no more
Still waiting
If youre out there, baby, please come to me
Still waiting
Wishing and wishing for days, baby
Still waiting
If youre out there, girl, please come to me
Still waiting

Everyday I Have To Cry
(arthur alexander)
Everyday I have to cry some
Everyday I have to cry some
Dry the water from my eyes some
Everyday I have to cry
There was a little boy I had planned to marry
This was my love I didnt want to share it
I thought that love would make my life bright and sunny
He said he couldnt love me cause he didnt have no money
So, everyday I have to cry some
Everyday I have to cry some
Dry the water from my eyes some
Everyday I have to cry
I got me a boy
I guess I really loved him
Every night now I was thinking of him
But you cant mix love with money
cause if you do its gonna hurt somebody
So, everyday I have to cry some
Everyday I have to cry some
Dry the water from my eyes some
Everyday I have to cry
Although I know that hes just a poor boy
Is it wrong to love cause hes not a rich boy?
Every time you mix love with money
Every time you hurt somebody
So, everyday I have to cry some
Everyday I have to cry some
Dry the water from my eyes some
Everyday I have to cry
Everyday I have to cry
Everyday I have to cry
Oh, oh

As If To Digest in The Darkness
Everyday those same voices heard increase!
Everyday
And they
Don't go away
Everyday those same voices heard increase!
Everyday
And they
Don't go away.
It's not like I don't care for people.
But everyday
Their bickering stays.
Everyday those same voices heard increase!
Everyday
And they don't go away.
It's not like I don't care for people.
But everyday
Their bickering stays.
And I've got to get away to watch the Sunset,
To observe them as their silhouettes
Fade on the horizon digested by the darkness,
To get some quietness.
Everyday those same noisy bickering people.
Everyday
Everyday
Everyday those same noisy bickering people.
Everyday
Everyday
And I'm glad when the Sun gets ready to set
To take their bickering silhouettes
Delivering a quietness,
As if to digest in the darkness.

To Have It And To Give
You need to feel it!
Everyday that special touch of love.
You should have it near...
Everyday that touch of love.
You need to feel it!
Everyday that special touch of love.
You should have it near...
Everyday that touch of love.
People need a benefit of it...
Everyday!
That touch of love.
To have it and to give,
That special touch of love.
You should have it near,
Everyday that touch of love.
No one should ever fear it,
The feeling and the touch of love.
No one...
Under the Sun,
And...
You need to feel it!
Everyday that special touch of love.
You should have it near...
Everyday that touch of love.
No one should ever fear it,
The feeling and the touch of love.
To have it and hold dear...
Supersized to hypnotize.
You need to feel it!
Everyday that special touch of love.
You should have it near...
Everyday that touch of love.
No one should ever fear it,
The feeling and the touch of love.
To have it and hold dear...
Supersized not analyzed!
People need a benefit of it...
Everyday that touch of love.
To have it and to give of it...
That special touch of love.
You should have it near...
Everyday that touch of love.
No one should ever fear it,
The feeling and the touch of love.

The Dream
'TWAS summer eve; the changeful beams still play'd
On the fir-bark and through the beechen shade;
Still with soft crimson glow'd each floating cloud;
Still the stream glitter'd where the willow bow'd;
Still the pale moon sate silent and alone,
Nor yet the stars had rallied round her throne;
Those diamond courtiers, who, while yet the West
Wears the red shield above his dying breast,
Dare not assume the loss they all desire,
Nor pay their homage to the fainter fire,
But wait in trembling till the Sun's fair light
Fading, shall leave them free to welcome Night!
So when some Chief, whose name through realms afar
Was still the watchword of succesful war,
Met by the fatal hour which waits for all,
Is, on the field he rallied, forced to fall,
The conquerors pause to watch his parting breath,
Awed by the terrors of that mighty death;
Nor dare the meed of victory to claim,
Nor lift the standard to a meaner name,
Till every spark of soul hath ebb'd away,
And leaves what was a hero, common clay.
Oh! Twilight! Spirit that dost render birth
To dim enchantments; melting Heaven with Earth,
Leaving on craggy hills and rumning streams
A softness like the atmosphere of dreams;
Thy hour to all is welcome! Faint and sweet
Thy light falls round the peasant's homeward feet,
Who, slow returning from his task of toil,
Sees the low sunset gild the cultured soil,
And, tho' such radliance round him brightly glows,
Marks the small spark his cottage window throws.
Still as his heart forestals his weary pace,
Fondly he dreams of each familiar face,
Recalls the treasures of his narrow life,
His rosy children, and his sunburnt wife,
To whom his coming is the chief event
Of simple days in cheerful labour spent.
The rich man's chariot hath gone whirling past,
And those poor cottagers have only cast
One careless glance on all that show of pride,
Then to their tasks turn'd quietly aside;
But him they wait for, him they welcome home,
Fond sentinels look forth to see him come;
The fagot sent for when the fire grew dim,
The frugal meal prepared, are all for him;
For him the watching of that sturdy boy,

Martian Sestina
I wanted to find my own get away,
My vacation somewhere far from the world.
I could imaging twinkling lights like stars,
So bright and blinding my disappointment,
Separating me from my thoughts, myself,
And my neurotic, despondent feelings.
In my gut, I have uneasy feelings—
Stirring and churning. They won't go away.
I'm trapped in my chair. I'm trapped in myself.
I'm trapped underneath the weight of this world.
I need to clear all the disappointment-
I'll tilt my head and look to the stars.
Out of my window, the lights are stars,
A celestial glimmer—I'm feeling
The gravity of my disappointment
Pulling me down and dragging me away.
I'm crushing from the pressures of the world.
I'm pressed so flat that I'm barely myself.
Yet, I hover so high above myself,
Dangling in the sky beside all the stars.
I think I've been a tourist of this world.
I've had this suspicion, this weird feeling
That I used to belong so far away,
So far from this constant disappointment.
I'm disappointed by disappointment,
The way I can't be happy for myself.
I believe better things are far away—
They wait for me to wish upon their star.
It's a sad, worrisome sort of feeling,
But I can't help my distance from the world.
It seems to me that I'm lost in the world,
Lost in the shroud of my disappointment.
In my daze, I am numbed to all feeling.
I don't know anything about myself
Except the escapist pings that the stars
Suggest. I'm not home. I've been far away.
I'm feeling so alone, far from my world.
Can I get away from disappointment
Wondering about myself and the stars?

The Four Seasons : Summer
From brightening fields of ether fair disclosed,
Child of the Sun, refulgent Summer comes,
In pride of youth, and felt through Nature's depth:
He comes attended by the sultry Hours,
And ever fanning breezes, on his way;
While, from his ardent look, the turning Spring
Averts her blushful face; and earth, and skies,
All-smiling, to his hot dominion leaves.
Hence, let me haste into the mid-wood shade,
Where scarce a sunbeam wanders through the gloom;
And on the dark-green grass, beside the brink
Of haunted stream, that by the roots of oak
Rolls o'er the rocky channel, lie at large,
And sing the glories of the circling year.
Come, Inspiration! from thy hermit-seat,
By mortal seldom found: may Fancy dare,
From thy fix'd serious eye, and raptured glance
Shot on surrounding Heaven, to steal one look
Creative of the Poet, every power
Exalting to an ecstasy of soul.
And thou, my youthful Muse's early friend,
In whom the human graces all unite:
Pure light of mind, and tenderness of heart;
Genius, and wisdom; the gay social sense,
By decency chastised; goodness and wit,
In seldom-meeting harmony combined;
Unblemish'd honour, and an active zeal
For Britain's glory, liberty, and Man:
O Dodington! attend my rural song,
Stoop to my theme, inspirit every line,
And teach me to deserve thy just applause.
With what an awful world-revolving power
Were first the unwieldy planets launch'd along
The illimitable void! thus to remain,
Amid the flux of many thousand years,
That oft has swept the toiling race of men,
And all their labour'd monuments away,
Firm, unremitting, matchless, in their course;
To the kind-temper'd change of night and day,
And of the seasons ever stealing round,
Minutely faithful: such the All-perfect hand!
That poised, impels, and rules the steady whole.
When now no more the alternate Twins are fired,
And Cancer reddens with the solar blaze,
Short is the doubtful empire of the night;
And soon, observant of approaching day,
The meek'd-eyed Morn appears, mother of dews,
At first faint-gleaming in the dappled east:
Till far o'er ether spreads the widening glow;
And, from before the lustre of her face,

Our Time Is Fading
Cut my wings, I'm growing them back today
Tomorrow's not changed, tomorrow's a bribe, tomorrow's not today
So I don't want to feel alive
I don't want to cheat my mind
Everybody trip, everybody slip
Come down, come down
I know our time is fading
And I know you're here to save me
I've been patiently waiting
It's alright, it's alright, it's alright
I know we're up and fading
I know there is no escaping
I've been patiently waiting
It's alright, it's alright it's all...
Let me in, you're up in my face
Tomorrow's a lie, tomorrow's a bribe, tomorrow's not today
So I don't want to feed my mind
And I don't want to feel unkind
Everybody trip, everybody slip
Come down, come down
I know our time is fading
And I know you're here to save me
I've been patiently waiting
It's alright, it's alright, it's alright
I know we're up and fading
I know there is no escaping
I've been patiently waiting
It's alright, it's alright it's all...
You-ohh
Yeah-ahhhh
Yeah-ahhhh
Yeah-woaaaah
Cut my wings off
Suffocate me
I know our time is fading
And I know you're here to save me
I've been patiently waiting
It's alright, it's alright, it's alright
I know we're up and fading
I know there is no escaping
I've been patiently waiting
It's alright, it's alright it's all...

Avon's Harvest
Fear, like a living fire that only death
Might one day cool, had now in Avon’s eyes
Been witness for so long of an invasion
That made of a gay friend whom we had known
Almost a memory, wore no other name
As yet for us than fear. Another man
Than Avon might have given to us at least
A futile opportunity for words
We might regret. But Avon, since it happened,
Fed with his unrevealing reticence
The fire of death we saw that horribly
Consumed him while he crumbled and said nothing.
So many a time had I been on the edge,
And off again, of a foremeasured fall
Into the darkness and discomfiture
Of his oblique rebuff, that finally
My silence honored his, holding itself
Away from a gratuitous intrusion
That likely would have widened a new distance
Already wide enough, if not so new.
But there are seeming parallels in space
That may converge in time; and so it was
I walked with Avon, fought and pondered with him,
While he made out a case for So-and-so,
Or slaughtered What’s-his-name in his old way,
With a new difference. Nothing in Avon lately
Was, or was ever again to be for us,
Like him that we remembered; and all the while
We saw that fire at work within his eyes
And had no glimpse of what was burning there.
So for a year it went; and so it went
For half another year—when, all at once,
At someone’s tinkling afternoon at home
I saw that in the eyes of Avon’s wife
The fire that I had met the day before
In his had found another living fuel.
To look at her and then to think of him,
And thereupon to contemplate the fall
Of a dim curtain over the dark end
Of a dark play, required of me no more
Clairvoyance than a man who cannot swim
Will exercise in seeing that his friend
Off shore will drown except he save himself.
To her I could say nothing, and to him
No more than tallied with a long belief
That I should only have it back again
For my chagrin to ruminate upon,
Ingloriously, for the still time it starved;
