Reception

RECEPTION

RECEPTION II

Bright crystal chandelier winks, - rainbow eyes
reflect above white damask, black bow ties.

Tight fitting, custom styled, rich evening dresses
flirt flitting, sit or circle smart addresses.

The silver sparkles still, but can(t) chit chat
where greed, ambition, steer seek tit for tat?

Bank and bad chance reach meet, both calculating
rank, land, advance, retreat, each other bating.

The scene is set, the ‘highest in the land’
stalk tall, small talk, with motives underhand,

fawning give and take, exclusive brand
stands glass in hand, cliques in-jokes understand,

don’t dare aloud let trust transcend bores' noise,
won’t where a crowd. Met lust bans friend, or cloys.

So glassy eyed - its rare they’re lies without; -
So pass we by, fresh air there lies, without.

The tinkling chandelier gleams still on high; -
frames dirty dishes, empty room awry...

Invitation

I received your invitation;
sorry I will not be there.
After loving you for so long,
it would be too much to bear.
As the invitation slips through my fingers,
I remember how your love slipped away,
so I am sending back you invitation,
the invitation for your wedding day.
I don’t think you will miss me,
as he will be holding you tight.
I will only bring back bad memories
and you wouldn’t want them tonight,
so I am sending back your invitation,
the invitation for your wedding day.
For my dearest darling
it is the only and best way.

After A Wedding.

After singing in the choir
at the major’s daughter’s wedding

you were all invited
to the posh reception

and you watched
the other guests

move around
the gardens and marquees

feeling rather out
of your class and league

and then she came
along side you and said

maybe one day
we can get married

like the major’s daughter
and have children

and be happy
and not have to feel

out of our class
and utterly lonely

and not have
my mother breathing

down my neck
to marry some schmuck

and you said
who knows maybe

and you smiled
and she put her arm

through yours
and you walked together

amongst the guests
and other members

of the church choir
beneath the summer sun

Invitation To The Blues

(roger miller)
Well I couldnt sleep last night
Just walked the floor
Dont know how Ill stand this anymore
Lonely all the time since I lost you
Received your invitation to the blues
I dont know why you cause me such pain
I just hope I just never go through this much again
Thanks for sending something I cant use
Received your invitation to the blues
You took the laughter from this world of mine
And thanks to you the sun will never shine
I walk the floor so much I wore out my shoes
I received your invitation to the blues
I dont know why you cause me such pain
I just hope I just never go through this much again
Well lonely me I dont know what to do
Received your invitation to the blues
I dont know why you cause me such pain
I just hope I never go though this much again
Thanks for sending something I cant use
Received your invitation to the blues

0348 Me, Royalty and Fame

I didn't wave anything at the Queen
when I saw her leaving an official reception
sitting bolt upright in the car,
still, pale, exhausted,
on her way to the next engagement
of the five or so that day.

I didn't say much to the Queen Mum
when presented to her -
some people chat with royalty when introduced
like old friends; others, even the most anti-monarchical
turn to idiot jelly. But
she sure was good in dealing with it.
A pro to her fingertips.

I didn't say anything to Prince Charles
when he opened an exhibition
that he and I had an interest in;
but I'm proud to say we pushed
the greatest man in the room
into the receiving line
which otherwise he would not have sought.

I didn't say anything to Princess Diana
when at a reception I saw she'd spotted
the big red badge I'd been given and wore proudly -
'One of the nice things about New York';
I felt a fraud and slunk away.

I didn't say anything to the Prime Minister
when he invited me for tea -
the invitation got mislaid.

I didn't say anything to John and Yoko
when I met them at her first art exhibition -
since just looking is what art is for.

I didn't say anything to the Rolling Stones
when there they were sitting in a line
in the sunlight on the wall outside the National Gallery
before they were screaming-famous.

I didn't say much to Andy Warhol
since my question seemed to knock him backwards -
he leaned back, shrugged and said weakly
'It seemed a good idea at the time...'
then his minders hustled him on through the Andy Andy.

I didn't say much to Gloria Swanson
when some upmarket con unexpectedly

Devil Will Ride

Guess its bye-bye, baby bye-bye
Guess its bye-bye, baby bye-bye
If you will, devil may ride
Invitation makes you feel fly
If you will, devil may ride
Well, the invitation makes you feel fly
If you will, devil will ride
Well, the invitation makes you feel fly
Did you ever even try
When the inspirations set to run dry?
Well, everybody wants a good time
Yeah, and everybody wants a good time
Its a goodbye
World going mad out there
Throw away all of your treasured possessions
cause even the royal mail
Cant deliver us from what weve got into
Guess its bye-bye, baby bye-bye
Guess its bye-bye, baby bye-bye
You know it
Oh, so good I could just live for this lie
Oh, cause everybody wants to get by
Its too easy to like this living
Been taking it easy again
Its too easy to like this living
If you will, the devil will ride
But the invitation makes you feel fly
Did you ever even try
When the inspirations set to run dry?
Did you ever even writhe
When the conversation turned to a guy?
And everybody wants a good time
Yeah, and everybody wants a good time
Its a goodbye
World going mad out there
Throw away all of your treasured possessions
Not even the royal mail
Can deliver us from what weve got into
Guess its bye-bye, baby bye-bye
Guess its bye-bye, baby bye-bye
Devil will ride
If you will, devil will ride
If you will, devil will ride
If you will, devil will ride

Over 'N' Out

Come with me guarantee
Everywhere we go we're gonna rip it up
(Over and out)
It's free to ride
Step inside
Keys in the ignition
We're gonna burn it up
(Over and out)
I don't know what the future holds
I don't care
Place your hands, now we're on a roll
All say yeah
No one knows what the future holds
No one cares
Get in line 'cos I'm on patrol
I say yeah
No matter who you are
Just get with me
You don't need an invitation
We're tearing this place apart
You know it 'cos
We're causing a real sensation
(Over and out)
Roll it out, getting loud
Kicking up our feet
Cos now it's party time
(Over and out)
Joie de vive, dance with me
We don't have to force it
Gonna make it rhyme
(Over and out)
I don't know what the future holds
I don't care
Place your hands, now we're on a roll
All say yeah
No one knows what the future holds
No one cares
Get in line 'cos I'm on patrol
I say yeah
No matter who you are
Just get with me
You don't need an invitation
We're tearing this place apart
You know it 'cos
We're causing a real sensation
Yeah, ain't nothing better
And yeah, there's no one ever, oh
I don't know what the future holds
I don't care
Place your hands, now we're on a roll

A Most Unusual Wedding

Because the bridegroom couldn’t be found
the bride was driven continually around.
Dickie and Melanie were marrying in style;
the first chimpanzees to walk down the aisle.

A reception at the classiest hotel Torbay,
followed by a honeymoon in Zimbabwe.
The best-man also named Dickie was with the groom,
but in a nearby hospital waiting room.

Earlier that morning there had been an accident,
which left the groom’s legs broken and bent.
The best-man phoned Melanie to let her know,
so off to the hospital she did quickly go.

With both legs now in traction and suffering with pain,
Dickie the groom did his best to explain.
He also suggested that the wedding should go ahead
and she should marry the best-man instead.

Abhorred by what her beloved fiancé had said,
she exclaimed, 'that chimp', she would never wed.
However, by the time he had finished to explain,
she accepted the proposal as simple and plain.

She went outside and put it to the best-man,
and he reluctantly agreed to the plan.
They returned to the church and spoke to the vicar,
who agreed to a proxy without a bicker.

The wedding and reception went without a hitch
but the trip to Zimbabwe had to be ditched.
At the reception, the bride explained the situation,
and thanked the best-man for his co-operation.

The proxy groom stood up and nervously said,
that he would’ve swopped the ceremony for a hospital bed,
and that one of the things in life that he was always dreading
was the thought of being a spare Dickie, at a monkeys wedding.

Soul Shakedown Party

[Bob Marley]
We gonna have a soul shakedown party tonight!
We gonna have a soul shakedown party tonight!
The way you love-a me, huh! It's all right!
When you put your lovin' arms around me, and you hold me tight -
hold me tight.
This is my invitation:
I got the special vacation;
I need your concentration
Just to feel your vibration
At that soul shakedown party
We gonna have a soul shakedown party tonight!
Jane is in the back yard
Doin' the outside dance;
I'm tellin' you the other day,
She didn't even get a chance!
But this is my invitation:
A just-a special vacation;
I need your concentration
Just to - just to - just to (vibration) just to:
(Soul shakedown party tonight) Baby, I need you tonight!
We gonna have a soul shakedown party tonight!
Hit it, brother, y'all!
---
/Instrumental break/
---
The way you love-a me, it's all right! (It's all right)
When you put your lovin' arms around me (arms around me),
and you hold me tight (hold me tight).
This is my invitation:
I got the special vacation;
I need your concentration
Just to feel your vibration.
At that soul shakedown party tonight!
We gonna have a soul shakedown party tonight! Uh!
Swing with me, baby!

Step Inside

(clarke / hicks / nash)
Side, step inside.
You can knock on my door anytime youre passing by
You dont need an invitation, step inside.
Well have tea and crumpets toasted by the fireside.
You dont need an invitation, step inside.
Step inside my doorway. theres no admission fee at all.
If youre in the neighborhood, you only have to call.
Ill be glad to see you, it just cannot be denied.
Its been a long time since I held you, step inside.
Dont tell your mother about me.
Shell only get angry knowing youve come back.
What her heart cant see cant hurt her.
So take my hand and step inside, take my hand and step inside.
Dont tell your mother about me.
You know shell only get angry knowing youve come back.
What her heart cant see cant hurt her.
So take my hand and step inside, take my hand and step inside.
If it gets too late, I have a bed that you can use.
You dont need an invitation
If you feel the inclination
You just call on speculation.
Step inside.
Side, step inside.
Step inside.
Step inside.
Step inside.

Money

Make your mind up
Whos going to think for you?
When the time comes
Youll have to see it through
Use your instinct
And take a risk or two
Dont you worry
cause youll know what to do
You can give so
Much to me
But I dont want it
I will be free
For the last time
Im going out the door
You dont need me
To help you anymore
Eyes wide open
I see its different now
Keep your comfort
Ill get along somehow
You can have my money
I dont need it anymore
I dont need your invitation
Down that lonesome corridor
Breakdown
You can have my money
I dont need it anymore
I dont need your invitation
Down that lonesome corridor
Nothing good comes easily
Count the cost, I will be free
You can scream and disagree
I dont want it - I will be free
You can have my money
I dont need it anymore
I dont need your invitation
Down that lonesome corridor
Nothing good comes easily
Count the cost, I will be free
You can scream and disagree
I dont want it - I will be free

Beautiful Occupation

Don't just stand there watching it happening
I can't stand it don't feel it
Something telling me
Don't wanna go out this way
Have a nice day
Read it in the headlines
Watch it on the tv
Put it in the background
Stick it in the back
Stick it in the back
For the beautiful occupation
The beautiful occupation
Don't need an invitation
To drop in upon a nation
Up to city come
I'm just sittin here
I'm just wastin my time
Half a million civilians gonna die today
They looked the wrong way
Read it in the headlines
Watch it on the tv
Put it in the background
Stick it in the back
Stick it in the back
For the beautiful occupation
The beautiful occupation
you don't need an invitation
to drop in upon a nation
Don't just stand there watching it happening
I can't stand it dont feel it

Dont wanna go out this way
Have a nice day
Read it in the headlines

Put it in the background
Stick it in the back
Stick it in the back
For the beautiful occupation
The beautiful occupation
You don't need an invitation
To drop in upon a nation
For the beautiful occupation

So much for an intervention
Don't call the united nations

Repairing What Needed To Be Fixed

When something clearly ends...
There is no need to try to revive it.
That action should have taken place...
Long before an ending,
Had an invitation to be faced.

Warnings are given.
And with them come denial.
Instead of repairing what needed to be fixed...
A relationship is put on a mental trial.
There is no need for this...
If reality is at risk.

When something clearly ends...
There is no need to try to revive it.
That action should have taken place...
Long before an ending,
Had an invitation to be faced.

Many choose to sit in a hesitation waiting,
In a stubbornness debating.
Instead of making a choice to resist this...
As a repairing what needed to be fixed,
Is nixed!
And an invitation to end nonsense...
Is accepted without contemplating it.

We'll See How That Goes

Had you ever felt offended,
By receiving an invitation from an enterprise...
Who initially did not seek your presence inside.
Where others who patronize were welcomed to sit.
And the only reason you received an invitation...
Was to assist this enterprise from going out of business?
And it has been requested you assist them to avoid this?

Did you feel offended?
OR has this ever happened to you?
And when closed eyes finally open to a wider view,
Would you rather spend time with people like that?
Or where services are rendered...
And people without exception know how to exchange respect.
Especially when business and money is involved.

'So...
Are you going to accept the invitation? '

No.
But I may offer to buy their business.
We'll see how that goes!

Jack and Kath (long poem)

Jack Benbow and his younger sister Kath
went for a walk along a winding path.
This led them through some very high trees
past some bluebells and buzzing bee’s.

The birds sang their songs on this sunny day
as the children happily went their way.
Along the path they skipped and walked,
singing and playing as they talked.

They came across a clearing in the wood
where a sign pointed to Notsogood.
“What a funny name for a place, ” said Kath.”
“Yes, ” said Jack, “but it’s time to head back.

We’ll go back the same way as we came
and follow the path back home again.”
But the path led them deeper into the wood
and up to another sign to Notsogood.

“Kath, didn’t we pass that sign earlier today,
surely we must head back the other way? ”
So they turned around and began to walk back.
“Look, ” said Kath, “there’s another sign Jack.

And that’s also pointing to Notsogood,
how do we get out of this silly wood? ”
“Let’s just follow the sign and see where it goes
it’s better than following the end of your nose.”

The winding path went from wide to narrow
as the dark clouds made it harder to follow.
Over a stream and home cooking filled the air,
it led to a shack, with a cat sleeping on a chair.

The rickety fence led them down the overgrown path,
“Let’s knock on the door for directions, ” said Kath.
The door slowly opened with a long drawn out creak,
an old woman in black appeared who began to speak.

“Hello happy children what a nice pleasant surprise, ”
as she looked at them closely with her piercing eyes.
“I was just about to make a lovely pot of herbal of tea,
would you like to join Malapropis and me? ”

“Malapropis, is that really the name of your cat? ”
“Yes it is, and all she ever does is get incredibly fat.”
This old woman’s nails were dirty, long and pointed,
and her nose and chin was bent and disjointed.

You Can't Always Get What You Want (feat. Hothouse Flowers)

I saw her today at the reception
A glass of wine in her hand
I knew she was gonna meet her connection
As at her feet was a footloose man
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes
You just might find
You'll get what you need
I went down to the demonstration
To get my fair share of abuse
Singing "we're gonna vent our frustrations"
"And if we don't we're gonna blow a 50-amp fuse"
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes
Well, you just might find
You'll get what you need
I went down to the Chelsea drugstore
To get your prescription filled
I was standing in line with Mister Jimmy
And man, did he look pretty ill
We decided that we would have a soda
My favorite flavor, was cherry red
I sung my song to Mister Jimmy
And he said one word to me, and that was "dead"
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
No no, you can't always get what you want
Oh, you can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes
You just might find
You'll get what you need
I saw her today at the reception
In her glass was a bleeding man
She was practiced at the art of deception
Well I could tell by her bloodstained hands
Oh, yes I could
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes
Yeah, you just might find
You'll get what you need

That you kicked out of his bed
That you kicked out of his bed
Says that he cannot forget you

A mourned celebration

Just four days back
It was all a celebration

The only son in the family
Got baptized in the Hindu way

He was decorated with
A three-stringed twine
The three strings representing
His henceforth pursuit
For understanding the Brahman, the supreme power
Through his thought, word and deed

Yesterday it was reception
The grand finale of this celebration
With people and relatives
Joining the occasion
And enjoying an auspicious dinner
Wishing the boy
A successful bachelorship
And in the understanding
Of the traditional ways

A couple and their only son
Have to offer excuse
And leave the celebrating scene
As there was a call
From the worksite of the
Male breadwinner of the family
To attend an emergency break down

They rushed and managed
To get into a train
Not in its originating station
But at the next stop
After a successful chase in a cab

The train left carrying this family
Who were denied being a part
Of the celebration

They slept in the train
But not to wake up again

It was sabotage that
Derailed the train
Particularly dislodging the bogie
In which the family travelled
On to the adjacent rail
And in seconds a hurrying
