The Basilisk and the Mirror

There once was a basilisk
Who never wanted to be alone,
But never had any friends
because one look would make them run in fear.
This basilisk could never look into its lover's eyes,
For its lover would turn to stone
And be all alone.

There once was a mirror,
Which displayed exactly the truth.
Some would want to doubt this mirror,
For its truth is the whole truth
Without a lie in its sights.

There once was a lonely basilisk and a truthful mirror,
Forbidden for one to see,
And one right even without a gaze to be seen.
The basilisk felt hopeless and rejected,
And wanted to ask the mirror why.
As always the mirror responded truthfully.
And now there is only stone within its sight.

There once was a basilisk,
With power one could only dream.
But now there is only a stone,
Old, crumbling, and grey.
It used to have life
But now is a stone to stay.
