Holiday Seasonings

Like a Wind-Up Toy
herky-jerky
lurchy-lurchy
I careen
against the Murky
shopping, shopping
gift-choosing
Auntie present-thinking
what is best
for each and every one;

House to Decorate
Dinner to Make
Relatives to Tolerate
Neighbor's caroling
unsure I am
of what grandma
will say
to embarrass
the boss;

kids' eyes to light
tree to decorate
five pounds to gain.

Snow to shovel
work to be done
(massive amounts)
before collapse
and then on rushing
to New Year's Eve
then the bills
come in January
and I faint.

And they call
it the Holiday season
where we celebrate;
some years better to call it
the Holler Day Season
because that is sometimes
just how it feels
deep into January.
