A Dagger Called Betrayal

Without warning you stabbed me,
with a dagger called betrayal.
You displayed no signs of emotion
then vanished into the rain and hail.

I was abandoned on an island of sorrow,
lost in a confusion of memories,
that swirled like dust in an hurricane,
which kept replaying your perfidy.

I died several times of heartbreak,
became withered like a cast off leaf.
The memories I couldn't escape from,
and time didn't bring relief.

Years later I saw a reflection in a puddle,
it was you as you once were,
but then a voice softly whispered my name,
as if it seemed to care.

Betrayal had done you no favours,
you were burdened by the passage of time.
Your body was bent and decrepit,
and life's map showed every line.

I was angry with myself for wasting my life,
for not moving on to pastures new.
My book of life was filled with hurt and pain,
based on the betrayal of which I knew.
