Searcher

Once, long ago at about age six
I took off following some old tracks
deep into the sand dunes along Lake Michigan
for the better part of a day;
When my frantic mother
finally found me
she implored of me, why would I
do such a horrible thing;
I saw no horror in it at all, and
did not understand how I could ever have done otherwise
than to follow my adventurous heart
into the wild;
I have been doing it
ever since,
the child in me
shall never stop searching.
