Vanity

High peaks beckon to vainglorious of hearts,
As if to say, from there, Heaven is near,
A fool from whom humility departs,
Would scale the heights, mindless of any fear;
Foolhardy quests may for adventures make,
To flaunt before the eyes of beasts and men,
In climbs, or hunts for fiercest game to take,
Are gloss photos, or stuffed heads for the den;
Where does courage lie, where lies vanity?
What profits a soul pushing to extremes,
Even to dare God's awesome majesty,
Scheming for which, the mere desire blasphemes;
…..Earth is way down here, high up there, the sky,
…..Firmaments apart, but naught we know why.
