The Stripper

She showed up in a faded dress of beige
Quite decent, till the time when she sat down
And then again, after crossing her legs
This time though, she didn't charge for what she'd shown

'The clothing shortage did affect your dress? '
'Oh, this short skirt? That's to announce my job.'
'But what you've worn has seen much better days.'
'I have to save for all the folks I love.'

'Relax, ' I said, ' you're not to work but paid
You need not strip, just tell me what I'll ask
Because I'll write your story now instead
And will that be, to you, a harder task? '

She was among those nameless refugees
Fleeing from tyranny and poverty
Whose skills by hand and mouth might have been less
But in body and face she's got plenty

To some orphans of war she'd have to share
This, I was told by her before we part
Some may think they've seen everything of her
But, lucky me, I got to see her heart.
