Life’s Burden
All my life I have carried people and enormous weights,
and my owner always gets annoyed
when I refuse another step to take.
He curses and shouts, tugs and pulls, and tries to pull me on,
but I wont move in any direction
until the load on my back has gone.
It’s not unknown for him to give me a hefty kick
and when I still refuse to budge,
he lays into me with a stick.
My ways have made me famous and it’s not for being a fool,
the people of the world know me for my obstinacy,
because I’m an ordinary stubborn mule.
