How Foolish We Were

We were sent to school to learn.
To learn and prepare for the future
Future as bright as the stars
Stars that will light every home
With sparks of joy, happiness and hope.

But at school we saved our best
Refused to perform with all our zest
Entered into coalition with crooks
Made enemies with our books
Portrayed hard work as punishment
Branded dedicated teachers as harsh
Labelled gems of advice as sermons
Sermons from people with ideas, archaic

Only to find out too late
That time has passed us by
Gone, laughing at us with scorn
For our ignorance of its proper use

Realising with regret bitter like aloes
We cannot regain lost time
Time has run away with our opportunity
The singular opportunity to be stars
Glinting, glittering, glistening stars
How foolish we were.
