The Music Box
On her dresser sat a music box.
It had been there for many a year.
Given to her by her special one
and now it brought a tear.
For the song it played was as old as she
and she was eighty-three.
Surprisingly it had never worn down
and she'd wind it everyday
It brought to mind the very first time
that she'd ever heard it play.
It was on a Christmas Eve he came
and handed her his gift.
She opened it up and saw the box
and she saw his smile lift.
He took her hand as the music played and held her in his arms.
Hummimg and swaying silently, enjoying all her charms.
Inside the box was his gift to her,
the gift she wore with pride.
It was on her finger for 50 years
and ever since he died.
Now every morn when she opened it
she pictured the scene again.
She prayed the wind-up spring would last
until her days were done.
For there'd never be a treasure like this,
never another one.
And so this morning she opened it
and swayed as she heard the sound.
She touched it softly and said his name
as if he were still around.
