Sonnet: Adolescence

Adolescence, a piquant stage of life,
Before one is truly an Adult called;
When problems of the ‘teen-age’ are rife,
The person is unfairly often hauled.

’Tis the time the Pituitary awakens!
Girls enter womanhood by their ‘first flow, ’
And in most boys, the voice breaks and slackens;
To Adult proportions, genitals grow.

What a period of mental turmoil!
And sexual hair begins to appear fast;
The acne-faced teen, the world tries to spoil;
In unique joys and sorrows, one is cast.

Teenagers want to understand the world;
The world doesn’t understand them but is cold!
