Baby Saves the Day

Russian family running for their lives,
jumps over barb wire fence
in Russia, it cuts them like a knife.
Only baby gets stuck with her wrap
Bolshevik soldiers show up,
Russian family scared as __.
One Bolshevik soldier soul is wise
He gives other soldier his rifle,
Let’s baby and family survive.
In barbwire fence soldier does go
He rescues baby and instantly is not a foe.
Russian family goes to America where freedom prevails,
Bob their grandson is born who hears of this tale.
I heard it today and had tears in my eyes,
We humans are not “made in sin” or “evil”,
even the Bolshevik soldier was a good guy.

loss of faith in devastated souls
will Russian soul thaw regenerate?

socialist history of faith
under Lenin Stalin Communism
under suppressed orthodox religion
devastated souls did not regenerate...

BABY SAVES THE DAY
Russian family running for their lives,

Another Version

Our trees are aspens, but people
mistake them for birches;
they think of us as characters
in a Russian novel, Kitty and Levin
living contentedly in the country.
Our friends from the city watch the birds
and rabbits feeding together
on top of the deep, white snow.
(We have Russian winters in Illinois,
but no sleighbells, possums instead of wolves,
no trusted servants to do our work.)
As in a Russian play, an old man
lives in our house, he is my father;
he lets go of life in such slow motion,
year after year, that the grief
is stuck inside me, a poisoned apple
that won't go up or down.
But like the three sisters, we rarely speak
of what keeps us awake at night;

Succumbing To His Charms

Being an ardent follower of dances, romances,
things of the night - as long as I return to the
comforting arms of my beloved afterwards - I
realised that an English actress who plays My
Fair Lady then ends up in the embrace of a
Russian dancer as she strides a chair in a wild
tango while looking like Audrey Hepburn herself
and the Russian dancer then has to disentangle
himself from his American wife -

Should prepare for possible disappointment as
the Russian who left his American wife without
much ado will probably leave his Audrey Hepburn
lookalike for the next beautiful lady who takes to
the stage on Strictly Come Dancing firmly clasped
in his arms while succumbing to his charms - or
vice versa - point is, when a radiant young lady
takes the fancy of a married man, odds are high
the next more radiant lady

On the Summit of Mt. Clarence

On the summit of Mount Clarence rotting slowly in the air
Stands a tall and naked flagstaff, relic of the Russian scare—
Russian scare that scares no longer, for the cry is “All is well”—
Yet the flagstaff still is standing like a lonely sentinel.
And it watches through the seasons—winter’s cold and summer’s heat,
Watches seaward, watches ever for the phantom Russian fleet.

In a cave among the ridges, where the scrub is tall and thick
With no human being near him dwells a wretched lunatic:
On Mount Clarence in the morning he will fix his burning eyes,
And he scans the sea and watches for the signal flag to rise;
In his ears the roar of cannon and the sound of battle drums
While he cleans his gun and watches for the foe that never comes.

And they say, at dreary nightfall, when the storms are howling round
Comes a phantom ship to anchor in the waters of the “Sound”,
And the lunatic who sees it wakes the landscape with his whoops,
Loads his gun and marches seaward at the head of airy troops—
To the summit of Mount Clarence leads them on with martial tread,
Fires his gun and sends the Russians to the mustering of the dead.

Those Foreign Engineers

Old Ivan McIvanovitch, with knitted brow of care,
Has climbed up from the engine-room to get a breath of air;
He slowly wipes the grease and sweat from hairy face and neck.
And from beneath his bushy brows he glowers around the deck.

The weirdest Russian in the fleet, whose words are strange to hear,
He seems to run the battleship, though but an engineer.
He is not great, he has no rank, and he is far from rich—
’Tis strange the admiral salutes old McIvanovitch.

He gives the order ‘Whusky!’ ere he goes below once more—
And ‘Whusky’ is a Russian word I never heard before;
Perhaps some Tartar dialect, because, you know, you’ll meet
Some very various Muscovites aboard the Baltic fleet.

And on another battleship that sailed out from Japan
The boss of all the engineers, you’ll find another man
With flaming hair and eyes like steel, and he is six-foot three—
His name is Jock McNogo, and a fearsome Jap is he.
