Captain Von Esson of the “Sebastopol”

Of his beauty, or stature, or colour of hair I hadn’t the slightest hint,
But he comes to me as a little man, with a scrubby beard and a squint,
With a heart somewhere if it wasn’t there, and an Irish terrier nose,
With a bark or a yelp for his friends and his crew, and a bull-dog grip for his foes.
The Japs had taken a permanent fort at the price of ten thousand sons,
And they shelled the ships in the harbour there with their landed naval guns.
Through sand bags laid on the upper deck, the shells went through with a whelt—
And some (because of ballistic curve) out under the armoured belt.

Till each was sunk that the Russians left—while the buildings reeled with the shock,
Save the last of the Russian ships of war—the Sebastopol—in dock.
And this is the reason—told in a line—why there is a tale to tell:
The Sebastopol had a man for boss, and a crew that knew it well.

He rousted them out from the dens ashore, and they didn’t engage in prayer,
For dear men pray when the fight is done, and there wasn’t a cheap man there.
He rooted the dock-hands out, when crouched, in deadly fear of the Jap,
But they stood in greater immediate fear of Von Esson’s squint and his yap.

Every church sings its own soft part
In the polyphony of a girl's choir,

I make out high, arched brows.

I surveyed the city from a marvelous height.
Within the walls of the Acropolis, I was consumed
With sorrow for the Russian name, for Russian beauty.

That crazy Russian

I heard the words that crazy Russian
Used together so many times
There is a chance they will stick together
In some foreign language, in a strange parlance

Like the bittersweet is not sweet or bitter
A strange tasting mix that is hard to describe
That crazy Russian is a complex expression
Where rules of language are hard to abide

Defying the norms, despite expectations
That crazy Russian is the last to stand
When money and power are driving forces
That is hard to imagine and understand

You made him a slave… So, slaves are in fashion
One likes it better, when one is on top
But, please, don’t blame that crazy Russian
The higher you climb, the harder the drop

Preacher praying-mantis
feeding springy before palladium
buying plying pliable plebeian
demand corpse plight medium

bearish plead plausible plastic
bought corpulent corpuscle ingested
inodorous inoffensive inoperative amounts
inquested ingested inquisition indictment.

Inlet inmate structural deficit decoy buy input
myth surplus succumbs as succulently sucked.
Tearing torn lion’s share profit festering festive
market reality competitors flesh fidelity defiled.

Alan Williamson, an analyst for HSBC in 2003, made a bearish prediction concerning Russian PGM Stocks. To quote Williamson, the 'palladium market, where the fundamentals of the market look almost unreservedly grim, ...We expect the market to move into structural oversupply, with ongoing downward pressure on prices. This bearish inaccuracy was due to the Russian government dumping large amounts of a Soviet Era palladium stockpile onto the global market. In reality Russian dumping masked the real market fundamental, which is a structural deficit, not a surplus of palladium. The Russian stockpile will soon be exhausted, existing mine production and recycling will not meet existing industry demand for palladium. “Emerging new demands in areas like palladium jewelry, fuel cell for mobile electronic, and even cold fusion, will create an even more acute shortage situation, ... driving the future palladium price to an exponentially increased purchase price.

Lara

Doctor Zhivago (Russian) is a 1965 epic drama-romance-war film directed by David Lean and loosely based on the famous novel of the same name by Boris Pasternak. It has remained popular for decades, and as of 2010 is the eighth highest grossing film of all time in the United States, adjusted for inflation.

The film takes place mostly during 1912-1923, against a backdropp of World War I, the Russian Revolution and Russian Civil War, as the regime of Tsar Nicholas II is overthrown and the Soviet Union established. A narrative framing device, set in the late 1940s to early 1950s, involves KGB Lieutenant General Yevgraf Andreyevich Zhivago (Alec Guinness) searching for the illegitimate child of his half brother, doctor Yuri Andreyevich Zhivago (Omar Sharif) , and his mistress Larissa ('Lara') Antipova (Julie Christie) . Yevgraf believes a young woman working on a dam project, Tonya Komarovskaya (Rita Tushingham) may be his niece, and tells her the story of her father's life.

In the Russian experience, although the Russian state is oppressive, it is their state, it is part of their fabric, and so the relation between Russian citizens and their state is complicated.
