'Til I Get It Right

Well I spent all my money at the record store
Bought a copy of "Revolver" and some Gang of Four
Singles Going Steady
Billie Holliday
They had it all on vinyl
And I was blown away
Then I walked around the corner to my favorite bar
I do a lot more walkin' since I wrecked my car
They all know my name here
I feel right at home
I just might spend the night here
Since I know you're not alone
And then they play that song I love
And I feel like I just can't loose
I feel like I should call you up
But I'll stay here all night
'Till I get it right
Well I wrote you a letter but I tore it up
Then I wrote another letter and I tore it up
Stare up at the ball game
On the TV screen
If you care to find me
You'll know where I'll be
And then they play that song I love
And I feel like I just can't loose
I feel like I should call you up
But I'll stay here all night
'Till I get it right
I'm down
I'm down
I'm down
I'm down
And then they play that song I love
And I feel like I just can't loose
I feel like I should call you up
But I'll stay here all night
'Till I get it right
And then they play that song I hate
And I feel like I just can't win
I'm breakin' down
The room begins to spin
I'll stay here all night
'Till I get it right

The House Of Dust: Complete

I.

The sun goes down in a cold pale flare of light.
The trees grow dark: the shadows lean to the east:
And lights wink out through the windows, one by one.
A clamor of frosty sirens mourns at the night.
Pale slate-grey clouds whirl up from the sunken sun.

And the wandering one, the inquisitive dreamer of dreams,
The eternal asker of answers, stands in the street,
And lifts his palms for the first cold ghost of rain.
The purple lights leap down the hill before him.
The gorgeous night has begun again.

'I will ask them all, I will ask them all their dreams,
I will hold my light above them and seek their faces.
I will hear them whisper, invisible in their veins . . .'
The eternal asker of answers becomes as the darkness,
Or as a wind blown over a myriad forest,
Or as the numberless voices of long-drawn rains.

We hear him and take him among us, like a wind of music,
Like the ghost of a music we have somewhere heard;
We crowd through the streets in a dazzle of pallid lamplight,
We pour in a sinister wave, ascend a stair,
With laughter and cry, and word upon murmured word;
We flow, we descend, we turn . . . and the eternal dreamer
Moves among us like light, like evening air . . .

Good-night! Good-night! Good-night! We go our ways,
The rain runs over the pavement before our feet,
The cold rain falls, the rain sings.
We walk, we run, we ride. We turn our faces
To what the eternal evening brings.

Our hands are hot and raw with the stones we have laid,
We have built a tower of stone high into the sky,
We have built a city of towers.

Our hands are light, they are singing with emptiness.
Our souls are light; they have shaken a burden of hours . . .
What did we build it for? Was it all a dream? . . .
Ghostly above us in lamplight the towers gleam . . .
And after a while they will fall to dust and rain;
Or else we will tear them down with impatient hands;
And hew rock out of the earth, and build them again.

Virginia's Story

Elizabeth Gates-Wooten is my Grand mom.

She was born in Canada with her father and brothers.
They owned a Barber Shoppe.
I don't remember exactly where in Canada.
I believe it was right over the border like Windsor or Toronto.
I never knew exactly where it was.

When she was old enough she got married.

First, she married a man by the name of Frank Gates.
He was from Madagascar.
He fathered my mom and her brother and sister.
The boy's name was Frank Gates, Jr.
Two girls name were Anna and Agnes.

Agnes was my mother.

Frank Gates went crazy after the war
He drank a lot and died
Then grandma Elizabeth married a man by the name of Mr. Wooten.
He had a German name, but I don't think he was German.
She took his last name after they got married.

Then they moved to West Virginia in the United States.

Their son, Frank Gates Jr. Became a delegate in the democratic party.
He use to get into a lot of trouble because he liked to fight.
He was a delegate from the 1940's to 1970's.
He died of gout in the 1970's.

Anna was a maid and cook.

She baked cakes and stuff for people as a side line.
She had a hump on her back (scoliosis) .
She had to walk with a cane.
She could cook good though.
She did this kind of work all of her life, just like her mom, Elizabeth

They were both good cooks

They had a lot of money because they had these skills
Especially when people had parties.
Because they would make all of this food and then they would have left-overs.
We got to eat a lot of stuff we normally wouldn't get because of that.
When they cooked, they didn't use no measuring stuff, they would just use there hand.

My moms name was Agnes Barrie Gates.

She married James Wright and moved to Cleveland.

The Ballad Of The Leather Medal

Only a Leather Medal, hanging there on the wall,
Dingy and frayed and faded, dusty and worn and old;
Yet of my humble treasures I value it most of all,
And I wouldn't part with that medal if you gave me its weight in gold.

Read the inscription: For Valour - presented to Millie MacGee.
Ah! how in mem'ry it takes me back to the "auld lang syne,"
When Millie and I were sweethearts, and fair as a flower was she -
Yet little I dreamt that her bosom held the heart of heroine.

Listen! I'll tell you about it... An orphan was Millie MacGee,
Living with Billie her brother, under the Yukon sky,
Sam, her pa, was cremated in the winter of nineteen-three,
As duly and truly related by the pen of an author guy.

A cute little kid was Billie, solemn and silken of hair,
The image of Jackie Coogan in the days before movies could speak.
Devoted to him was Millie, with more than a mother's care,
And happy were they together in their cabin on Bunker Creek.

'Twas only a mining village, where hearts are simple and true,
And Millie MacGee was schoolma'am, loved and admired by all;
Yet no one dreamed for a moment she'd do what she dared to do -
But wait and I'll try to tell you, as clear as I can recall...

. . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Christmas Eve in the school-house! A scene of glitter and glee;
The children eager and joyful; parents and neighbours too;
Right in the forefront, Millie, close to the Christmas Tree.
While Billie, her brother, recited "The Shooting of Dan McGrew."

I reckon you've heard the opus, a ballad of guts and gore;
Of a Yukon frail and a frozen trail and a fight in a dringing dive,
It's on a par, I figger, with "The Face on the Bar-Room Floor,"
And the boys who wrote them pieces ought to be skinned alive.

Picture that scene of gladness; the honest faces aglow;
The kiddies gaping and spellbound, as Billie strutted his stuff.
The stage with its starry candles, and there in the foremost row,
Millie, bright as a fairy, in radient flounce and fluff.

More like an angel I thought her; all she needed was wings,
And I sought for a smile seraphic, but her eyes were only for Bill;
So there was I longing and loving, and dreaming the craziest things,
And Billie shouting and spouting, and everyone rapt and still.

Proud as a prince was Billie, bang in the footlights' glare,
And quaking for him was Millie, as she followed every word;
Then just as he reached the climax, ranting and sawing the air -

Rock Steady

Saw an ad in the newspaper that caught my eye
I said to my baby this sounds like a ticket for you and i
It said volunteers wanted for a very special trip
To commune with mother nature on a big wooden ship
We took a taxi to the river in case any places were free
There was an old guy with a beard
And every kind of creature as far as the eye could see
This old guy was the boss, he said,
i wont tell you no lie
But theres more to this journey that is apparent to the eye
He said hed heard gods message on the radio
It was going to rain forever and hed told him to go
Ill protect you all dont worry Ill be a father to you all
Ill save two of every animal, no matter how small
But Ill need some assistants to look after the zoo
I cant see nobody better so youll just have to do
I said, just tell me something before its too late and were gone
I mean just how safe is this boat well be on?
its rock steady rock steady
Rock steady rock steady
Rock steady rock steady
Rock steady rock steady
It rained for forty days and forty long nights
Id never seen rain like it and it looked like our old friend
Was being proved right
We had no time to worry though there was just to much to do
Between the signified monkey and the kangaroo
We had to wash all the animals we had to feed them too
We were merely human slaves in a big floating zoo
She said, hey baby I dont mean to be flip
But it seems this old man is on some power trip
I said, no, no sugar you must be wrong
I mean look at the size of this boat were on.
Were as safe as houses, as safe as mothers milk
Hes as cool as november and as smooth as china silk
Hes gods best friend, hes got a seat on the board
And life may be tough but were sailing with the lord.
Rock steady rock steady
Rock steady rock steady
Rock steady rock steady
Rock steady rock steady
Woke up this morning and something had changed
Like a room in my house had just been rearranged
She said, its stopped raining and I know the guys kind
But if we stay here much longer Im gonna lose my mind.
So we said we had a mission for his favourite dove
To see if there was any mercy from this great God above
So to find dry land, away the white bird flew
We didnt need no country just a rock would do
When the dove came back to us, he threw down a twig

Song of Wink Star

The Song of Wink Star
a happy story for children of all ages
story and text © Raj Arumugam, June 2008

☼ ☼

☼ Preamble

Come…children all, children of all ages…sit close and listen…
Come and listen to this happy story of the stars and of life…
Come children of the universe, children of all nations and of all races, and of all climates and of all kinds of space and dimensions and universes…
Come, dearest children of all beings of the living universe, come and listen to The Song of Wink Star…

Come and listen to this story, this happy story…listen, as the story itself sings to you

Sit close then, and listen to the story that was not made by any, or written by a poet, or fashioned by grandfathers and grandmothers warming themselves at the fire of burning stars…

O dearest children all, come and listen to the story that lives
of itself, and that glows bright and happy….

Come…children all, children of all ages, come and listen to this happy story, the story so natural and smooth as life, as it sings itself to you….

The Song of Wink Star
a happy story for children of all ages

☼ 1

Night Child, always so light and gentle, slept on a flower.
And every night, before he went to sleep, he would look up at the sky.
He would look at the eastern corner, five o’clock.

And there he would see all the stars in near and distant galaxies that were only visible to the People of Star Eyes.

Night Child was one of the People of Star Eyes. And so he could see the stars. And of all the stars he could see, he loved to watch Wink Star.

Wink Star twinkled and winked and laughed.
Every night Wink Star did that. Winked and laughed.

Walkin Down The Line

Well, Im walkin down the line,
Im walkin down the line
An Im walkin down the line.
My feetll be a-flyin
To tell about my troubled mind.
I got a heavy-headed gal
I got a heavy-headed gal
I got a heavy-headed gal
She aint feelin well
When shes better only time will tell
Well, Im walkin down the line,
Im walkin down the line
An Im walkin down the line.
My feetll be a-flyin
To tell about my troubled mind.
My money comes and goes
My money comes and goes
My money comes and goes
And rolls and flows and rolls and flows
Through the holes in the pockets in my clothes
Well, Im walkin down the line,
Im walkin down the line
An Im walkin down the line.
My feetll be a-flyin
To tell about my troubled mind.
I see the morning light
I see the morning light
Well its not because
Im an early riser
I didnt go to sleep last night
Well, Im walkin down the line,
Im walkin down the line
An Im walkin down the line.
My feetll be a-flyin
To tell about my troubled mind.
I got my walkin shoes
I got my walkin shoes
I got my walkin shoes
An I aint a-gonna lose
I believe I got the walkin blues
Well, Im walkin down the line,
Im walkin down the line
An Im walkin down the line.
My feetll be a-flyin
To tell about my troubled mind.

Someone to lean on when their calling my bluff
Someone to .....
Talking about R. Gang, R. Gang, R. Gang, R. Gang, R. Gang, R. Gang
There were only your friends who died ??
Well now the boy wanna run out with the boys tonight
And the girls are on the corner in a fashion show all right
I got their allmoter dead on my right
You better get great protect on this cool old night
Talking about R. Gang, R. Gang, R. Gang, R. Gang, R. Gang, R. Gang
There were only your friends who died ??
Well now, if there's a moral to be told
Its just that, growin' up is to growin' old
And when the asses say yeah, I'm doing all right

VI. Giuseppe Caponsacchi

Answer you, Sirs? Do I understand aright?
Have patience! In this sudden smoke from hell,—
So things disguise themselves,—I cannot see
My own hand held thus broad before my face
And know it again. Answer you? Then that means
Tell over twice what I, the first time, told
Six months ago: 't was here, I do believe,
Fronting you same three in this very room,
I stood and told you: yet now no one laughs,
Who then … nay, dear my lords, but laugh you did,
As good as laugh, what in a judge we style
Laughter—no levity, nothing indecorous, lords!
Only,—I think I apprehend the mood:
There was the blameless shrug, permissible smirk,
The pen's pretence at play with the pursed mouth,
The titter stifled in the hollow palm
Which rubbed the eyebrow and caressed the nose,
When I first told my tale: they meant, you know,
"The sly one, all this we are bound believe!
"Well, he can say no other than what he says.
"We have been young, too,—come, there's greater guilt!
"Let him but decently disembroil himself,
"Scramble from out the scrape nor move the mud,—
"We solid ones may risk a finger-stretch!
And now you sit as grave, stare as aghast
As if I were a phantom: now 't is—"Friend,
"Collect yourself!"—no laughing matter more
"Counsel the Court in this extremity,
"Tell us again!"—tell that, for telling which,
I got the jocular piece of punishment,
Was sent to lounge a little in the place
Whence now of a sudden here you summon me
To take the intelligence from just—your lips!
You, Judge Tommati, who then tittered most,—
That she I helped eight months since to escape
Her husband, was retaken by the same,
Three days ago, if I have seized your sense,—
(I being disallowed to interfere,
Meddle or make in a matter none of mine,
For you and law were guardians quite enough
O' the innocent, without a pert priest's help)—
And that he has butchered her accordingly,
As she foretold and as myself believed,—
And, so foretelling and believing so,
We were punished, both of us, the merry way:
Therefore, tell once again the tale! For what?
Pompilia is only dying while I speak!
Why does the mirth hang fire and miss the smile?
My masters, there's an old book, you should con
For strange adventures, applicable yet,

Barefoot In Beverly Hills

Still walkin barefoot, still walkin barefoot, still,
Still walkin barefoot, in beverly hills,
Still walkin barefoot still, in beverly hills,
I can walk on the stone, I can walk on the grass,
Im walkin all over this earth,
I can walk on the line, I can walk on the edge,
Im walkin all over this earth,
I can walk on low, I can walk on high,
Im walkin all over this earth,
And, I can walk on the grass, I can walk on the grass,
And walk on, you name it.
Still walkin barefoot, in beverly hills,
Still walkin barefoot still, in beverly hills,
(? )
I keep my feet from burning up,
For years I walked back beat,
With anything under my feet,
An immunity to heat,
An immunity to heat,
And walk on, you name it.
Still walkin barefoot, in beverly hills,
Still walkin barefoot still, in beverly hills,
Still walkin barefoot, in beverly hills,
Still walkin barefoot still, in beverly hills,
An immunity to heat.
Still walkin barefoot, in beverly hills,
Im still walkin barefoot still, in beverly hills,
Still walkin barefoot, in beverly hills,
Still walkin barefoot still, in beverly hills, (x2)
Oh for years I walked back beat,
All the years have gone to my feet,
Ive walked in the tall grass?
An immunity to heat.

Walking On Fire

Words and music: taylor rhodes, todd carney paul dean
I cant stop when youre smokin in the third degree
A dead shot, she takes aim and now Im history
Right on the money, make no mistake
She can sting you like a rattlesnake
Red hot, she redefines the word fantasy
A hurricane, a heart attack, a tidal wave that you cant
Hold back
Im walkin, Im walkin on fire
Wolkin, Im walkin on fire, Im taking my turn
Im burnin (burnin), Im burnin, when the lightning strikes
Im walkin on fire
Green light, theres no stopping when the word is go
Fahrenheit, one on one, and now Im ready to blow
Relieve the pressure, works like a charm,
She got me ringin like a three-alarm
Stage fright, she got me shaking like a tremolo
A hurricane, a heart attack, a tidal wave that you cant
Hold bock
Im walkin, Im walkin on fire
Walkin, walkin on fire, Im taking my turn
Im burnin, (burnin), Im burnin, when the lightning strikes
Im walkin on fire
A hurricane, a heart attack, a tidal wove that you cant
Hold back
Im walkin, Im walkin on fire
Walkin, walkin on fire, oh yeah
Im walkin, walkin on fire
Im walkin, walkin on fire, Im taking my turn
Im burnin, (burnin), Im burnin, when the lightning strikes
Im walkin on fire

V. Count Guido Franceschini

Thanks, Sir, but, should it please the reverend Court,
I feel I can stand somehow, half sit down
Without help, make shift to even speak, you see,
Fortified by the sip of … why, 't is wine,
Velletri,—and not vinegar and gall,
So changed and good the times grow! Thanks, kind Sir!
Oh, but one sip's enough! I want my head
To save my neck, there's work awaits me still.
How cautious and considerate … aie, aie, aie,
Nor your fault, sweet Sir! Come, you take to heart
An ordinary matter. Law is law.
Noblemen were exempt, the vulgar thought,
From racking; but, since law thinks otherwise,
I have been put to the rack: all's over now,
And neither wrist—what men style, out of joint:
If any harm be, 't is the shoulder-blade,
The left one, that seems wrong i' the socket,—Sirs,
Much could not happen, I was quick to faint,
Being past my prime of life, and out of health.
In short, I thank you,—yes, and mean the word.
Needs must the Court be slow to understand
How this quite novel form of taking pain,
This getting tortured merely in the flesh,
Amounts to almost an agreeable change
In my case, me fastidious, plied too much
With opposite treatment, used (forgive the joke)
To the rasp-tooth toying with this brain of mine,
And, in and out my heart, the play o' the probe.
Four years have I been operated on
I' the soul, do you see—its tense or tremulous part—
My self-respect, my care for a good name,
Pride in an old one, love of kindred—just
A mother, brothers, sisters, and the like,
That looked up to my face when days were dim,
And fancied they found light there—no one spot,
Foppishly sensitive, but has paid its pang.
That, and not this you now oblige me with,
That was the Vigil-torment, if you please!
The poor old noble House that drew the rags
O' the Franceschini's once superb array
Close round her, hoped to slink unchallenged by,—
Pluck off these! Turn the drapery inside out
And teach the tittering town how scarlet wears!
Show men the lucklessness, the improvidence
Of the easy-natured Count before this Count,
The father I have some slight feeling for,
Who let the world slide, nor foresaw that friends
Then proud to cap and kiss their patron's shoe,
Would, when the purse he left held spider-webs,
Properly push his child to wall one day!

Valley Of Pain

DON'T LET ME GROW BITTER I PRAY
GIVE ME STRENGTH TO CARRY ON MY WAY
IM LEANIN' ON YOU LIKE A WOODEN CANE
WHILE I'M WALKIN THROUGH I'M WALKIN' THROUGH
THE VALLEY OF PAIN
I'M BELIEVN' THERE'S A REASON FOR THIS TRIAL
THIS TOO SHALL PASS IN A LITTLE WHILE
OH LORD HAVE MERCY IF I COMPLAIN
WHILE I'M WALKIN' THROUGH, I'M WALKIN THROUGH
A VALLEY OF PAIN
WHILE I'M WALKIN' THROUGH, I'M WALKIN THROUGH
A VALLEY OF PAIN
WON'T YOU BATHE ME IN A RIVER OF MY TEARS
WHISPER HOPE AND TRUTH AND COURAGE IN MY EARS
WHEN I'M HURTING I HAVE A DANGEROUS TOUNGE
I'LL LOSE IT AND USE IT LIKE A GUN
LORD STOP ME IF YOU SEE ME TAKIN' AIM
WHILE I'M WALKIN' THROUGH, I'M WALKIN THROUGH
A VALLEY OF PAIN
I'M WALKIN' THROUGH, I'M WALKIN THROUGH
A VALLEY OF PAIN
I'M WALKIN' THROUGH, I'M WALKIN THROUGH
A VALLEY OF PAIN
BATHE ME IN A RIVER OF MY TEARS
WHISPER HOPE AND TRUTH AND COURAGE IN MY EARS
REMIND ME WHEN I REACH THE OTHER SIDE
I'LL BE THANKFUL FOR EVERY TEAR THAT I CRIED
DON'T LET ME GROW BITTER I PRAY
GIVE ME STRENGTH TO CARRY ON MY WAY
DON'T LET THE DARKNESS DRIVE ME INSANE
WHILE I'M WALKIN' THROUGH, WALKIN THROUGH
A VALLEY OF PAIN
I'M WALKIN' THROUGH, I'M WALKIN' THROUGH
A VALLEY OF PAIN
I'M WALKIN' THROUGH, I'M WALKIN' THROUGH
THIS VALLEY OF PAIN

Millie And Billie

Billie I wonder why are we insane
Will we ever get better
Will we stay the same
Billie I'm worried

Millie don't worry
No one knows our pain
Being in love is crazy not alone that way
I know you're worried today

God made love crazy so he wouldn't feel alone
He was thinking of us he was thinking of us
God made love crazy so he wouldn't feel so alone

Billie my mind seems to wander
To events of a night long ago
Driving alone with our guilt well concealed
In the trunk of your '68 Olds

Millie our world's an asylum
And our minds like you say ain't that straight
But you know and I know our passion's
Not deformed it's true to say
We'll love our lifetime

God made love crazy so he wouldn't feel alone
He was thinking of us he was thinking of us
God made love crazy so he wouldn't feel so alone

Billie I dream of our children
They're frightening and gruesome and sad
And I don't want them growing inside me
They're no price for the love that we have

Oh Millie oh Billie criminally insane
Oh Millie oh Billie

Oh Billie it's fresh in my memory
The night that it had to be done
You with your pick axe and scissors
And you with your shovel and gun

And I liked your late husband Donald
But such torture his memory brings
All sliced up and sealed tight in baggies
Guess love makes you do funny things

Oh Millie oh Billie criminally insane
Oh Millie oh Billie

Driving Lessons

Car...car...car...car...car...car
Lets get behind the wheel
Well go driving
To the mountains
To the roof tops
We can take it nice and slow
Ill be driving
To the icebergs
To the edges
Car
Get in the car
Car
Get in the car
Head in to the clouds
Past the buildings
By the harbour
Through the storm
Tear across the page
By the marker
Leave the lights on
By the poolside
Car
Get in the car
Car
Get in the car
I can make an honest man of you
I can make you clean if you want me to
I can make you go very far
Just take the car
Get in the car
Car
Get in the car
Take the car...you gotta feel...anytime...anyplace...anywhere...take the care...you gotta feel...anytime...anyplace...anywhere...get in the car...you gotta feel...anytime...to make it real...anywhere...get in the car...you gotta feel...anytime...to make it real...anywhere...get in the car..you gotta feel...get in the car...to make it real...get in the car..you gotta feel...get in the car...to make it real...get in the car..you gotta feel...get in the car...to make it real...get in the car..you gotta feel...get in the car...to make it real...get in the car..you gotta feel...get in the car...to make it real...

Thats When I Reach For My Revolver

Once I had my heroes
Once I had my dreams
But all of that is changed now
The truth begins again
The truth is not that comfortable, no
Mother taught us patience
The virtues of restraint
Father taught us boundaries
The knowledge we must go
Im trying to protect my unity
Thats when I reach for my revolver
Thats when it all gets blown away
Thats when I reach for my revolver
The spirit passes by this way
A friend of mine once told me
His one and only aim
To build a giant castle
And in it sign his name
Sign it with complete community
Thats when I reach for my revolver
Thats when it all gets blown away
Thats when I reach for my revolver
The spirit passes by this way
Now that the sky is empty
And that is nothing new
Instead they look upon us
When they tell me
That were nothing
I say!
Thats when I reach for my revolver
Thats when it all gets blown away
Thats when I reach for my revolver
The spirit passes by this way
Thats when I reach for my revolver
Thats when it all gets blown away
Thats when I reach for my revolver
The spirit passes by this way

XI. Guido

You are the Cardinal Acciaiuoli, and you,
Abate Panciatichi—two good Tuscan names:
Acciaiuoli—ah, your ancestor it was
Built the huge battlemented convent-block
Over the little forky flashing Greve
That takes the quick turn at the foot o' the hill
Just as one first sees Florence: oh those days!
'T is Ema, though, the other rivulet,
The one-arched brown brick bridge yawns over,—yes,
Gallop and go five minutes, and you gain
The Roman Gate from where the Ema's bridged:
Kingfishers fly there: how I see the bend
O'erturreted by Certosa which he built,
That Senescal (we styled him) of your House!
I do adjure you, help me, Sirs! My blood
Comes from as far a source: ought it to end
This way, by leakage through their scaffold-planks
Into Rome's sink where her red refuse runs?
Sirs, I beseech you by blood-sympathy,
If there be any vile experiment
In the air,—if this your visit simply prove,
When all's done, just a well-intentioned trick,
That tries for truth truer than truth itself,
By startling up a man, ere break of day,
To tell him he must die at sunset,—pshaw!
That man's a Franceschini; feel his pulse,
Laugh at your folly, and let's all go sleep!
You have my last word,—innocent am I
As Innocent my Pope and murderer,
Innocent as a babe, as Mary's own,
As Mary's self,—I said, say and repeat,—
And why, then, should I die twelve hours hence? I
Whom, not twelve hours ago, the gaoler bade
Turn to my straw-truss, settle and sleep sound
That I might wake the sooner, promptlier pay
His due of meat-and-drink-indulgence, cross
His palm with fee of the good-hand, beside,
As gallants use who go at large again!
For why? All honest Rome approved my part;
Whoever owned wife, sister, daughter,—nay,
Mistress,—had any shadow of any right
That looks like right, and, all the more resolved,
Held it with tooth and nail,—these manly men
Approved! I being for Rome, Rome was for me.
Then, there's the point reserved, the subterfuge
My lawyers held by, kept for last resource,
Firm should all else,—the impossible fancy!—fail,
And sneaking burgess-spirit win the day.
The knaves! One plea at least would hold,—they laughed,—
One grappling-iron scratch the bottom-rock
