The Fireman

He walked with calm and grace
Into the burning blaze
He was a liar
When talking about the fire
Of course it scared him
Almost to the brim

But still he made it in
With fears and a grin
To cover his face he wore a gas mask
So smoke wouldn’t distract his task

His comrade in the fiery battle
Tripped over a toy rattle
Before the fire could claim his mate
He pulled him back from fate

The pair found a woman frail
Clutching with her a water pail
She kept on fretting
As they kept on stepping

Saving her from a certainty
Seemed to take an eternity
Chaos reigned down
As a way out they found

He let the medics take her away
So he could finish his day
He ignored a shout
Before the fire was out

The building was burned black
A girl, the embers she will track
He smiled at his mate
Who stood outside the gate

We managed it again
He said to his friend
The fire is out
Until lit by a lout
The fire man got into his truck
Gladdened by his continuing luck
