Memory's Shadow
Faces and names lost in haze and dark
Hurts and blames always leaving their mark
Pain and lies only sink into grey
Lovers and friends gradually fade away
Towers of power brought down low
Where? All there in memory’s shadow
A promise made down on one knee
A first kiss made under an ancient oak tree
An action of hate against a community
Consequences revealed in a moment of clarity
A shot to the head not painful or slow
All held right there in memory’s shadow
Snapshots of a time long since past
Fragments salvaged in hope they will last
Pieces of horror we do not want to keep
Slices of life to make grown men weep
A farewell to a beauty to whom love we did show
Will always be caught there in memory’s shadow
The good and the bad locked behind closed doors
Offering an angel’s joy, or pain of festering sores
To drive the mind into torment or to set it free
To make sure I remember you and you also do me
From the first spark of light to Death’s diminishing glow
All is there to be found in memory’s shadow
