XI. Guido
You are the Cardinal Acciaiuoli, and you,
Abate Panciatichi—two good Tuscan names:
Acciaiuoli—ah, your ancestor it was
Built the huge battlemented convent-block
Over the little forky flashing Greve
That takes the quick turn at the foot o' the hill
Just as one first sees Florence: oh those days!
'T is Ema, though, the other rivulet,
The one-arched brown brick bridge yawns over,—yes,
Gallop and go five minutes, and you gain
The Roman Gate from where the Ema's bridged:
Kingfishers fly there: how I see the bend
O'erturreted by Certosa which he built,
That Senescal (we styled him) of your House!
I do adjure you, help me, Sirs! My blood
Comes from as far a source: ought it to end
This way, by leakage through their scaffold-planks
Into Rome's sink where her red refuse runs?
Sirs, I beseech you by blood-sympathy,
If there be any vile experiment
In the air,—if this your visit simply prove,
When all's done, just a well-intentioned trick,
That tries for truth truer than truth itself,
By startling up a man, ere break of day,
To tell him he must die at sunset,—pshaw!
That man's a Franceschini; feel his pulse,
Laugh at your folly, and let's all go sleep!
You have my last word,—innocent am I
As Innocent my Pope and murderer,
Innocent as a babe, as Mary's own,
As Mary's self,—I said, say and repeat,—
And why, then, should I die twelve hours hence? I—
Whom, not twelve hours ago, the gaoler bade
Turn to my straw-truss, settle and sleep sound
That I might wake the sooner, promptlier pay
His due of meat-and-drink-indulgence, cross
His palm with fee of the good-hand, beside,
As gallants use who go at large again!
For why? All honest Rome approved my part;
Whoever owned wife, sister, daughter,—nay,
Mistress,—had any shadow of any right
That looks like right, and, all the more resolved,
Held it with tooth and nail,—these manly men
Approved! I being for Rome, Rome was for me.
Then, there's the point reserved, the subterfuge
My lawyers held by, kept for last resource,
Firm should all else,—the impossible fancy!—fail,
And sneaking burgess-spirit win the day.
The knaves! One plea at least would hold,—they laughed,—
One grappling-iron scratch the bottom-rock

I Know Their Name
I know their name. I saw their picture in the paper yesterday
I know their name. I saw the story that was written on the page
I know their name. I used to play with them they lived a block away
I know their name. Their father used to drive a light blue chevrolet
I know their name. I used to play with them I swear I know their name.

That Situation
(g. valenciano/m. pagan)
There's so much in life
That we would like to do
We can wait for love
Until we know it's true
It's up to us
Not to jump into that situation
I'm too young, not ready yet
I got so much to do
Got to take it step-by-step
It's best for me and you
It's up to us
Not to jump into that situation
Let's take it easy
One step at a time
Why should we risk it?
Our future's on the line
It's up to us
Not to get into that situation
Is this what, what we want?
Is it worth risking?
All we have ahead to do
Let's not make that mistake
We're gonna be all right
If we choose to wait
There's so much in life
That we would like to do
We can wait for love
Until we know it's true
It's up to us
Not to jump into that situation
I'm too young, not ready yet
I got so much to do
Got to take it step-by-step
It's best for me and you
It's up to us
Not to jump into that situation
Let's take it easy
One step at a time
Why should we risk it?
Our future's on the line
It's up to us
Not to get into that situation
There's so much in life
That we would like to do
We can wait for love
Until we know it's true
It's up to us
Not to jump into that situation

Blue Ridge
Up there on the mountain road, the fireworks
blistered and subsided, for once at eye level:
spatter of light like water flicked from the fingers;
the brief emergent pattern; and after the afterimage bled
from the night sky, a delayed and muffled thud
that must have seemed enormous down below,
the sound concomitant with the arranged
threat of fire above the bleachers.
I stood as tall and straight as possible,
trying to compensate, trying not to lean in my friend's
direction. Beside me, correcting height, he slouched
his shoulders, knees locked, one leg stuck out
to form a defensive angle with the other.
Thus we were most approximate
and most removed.
In the long pauses
between explosions, he'd signal conversation
by nodding vaguely toward the ragged pines.
I said my children would have loved the show.
He said we were watching youth at a great distance,
and I thought how the young
are truly boring, unvaried as they are
by the deep scar of doubt, the constant afterimage
of regret—no major tension in their bodies, no tender
hesitation, they don't yet know
that this is so much work, scraping
from the self its multiple desires; don't yet know
fatigue with self, the hunger for obliteration
that wakes us in the night at the dead hour
and fuels good sex.
Of course I didn't say it.
I realized he watched the fireworks
with the cool attention he had turned on women
dancing in the bar, a blunt uninvested gaze
calibrating every moving part, thighs,
breasts, the muscles of abandon.
I had wanted that gaze on me.
And as the evening dwindled to its nub,
its puddle of tallow, appetite without object,
as the men peeled off to seek
the least encumbered consolation
and the women grew expansive with regard—
how have I managed so long to stand among the paired
bodies, the raw pulsing music driving
loneliness into the air like scent,
and not be seized by longing,
not give anything to be summoned
into the larger soul two souls can make?
Watching the fireworks with my friend,

Party Of God
[ billy bragg and natalie merchant ]
In a busy street
A man sits down
Oblivious to the traffic sounds
No chaos
No frenzied shrieking crowd
Thank God their silence
Walking heads bent down
Come when they saw us
Called it lethargy
The treadmill turns
There down below their feet
Should I pray for an end to come
Quickly (quickly), quickly (quickly)
Or cross the waves of an angry sea
Risking (risking)
And braving (braving)
The shipwreck and the mutiny assailing
Assailing
In a haunted doorway
And from the light of day
See another life fall to ruin in pain
False smiles from even children it seems
Landlocked ground for empty and lost dreams
A league against me
I hear him say
Its not worth half the effort
Or the price you pay
Should I pray for an end to come
Quickly (quickly), quickly (quickly)
Or should I raise my face to the heavens above
And tell God (dear God)
Stop jeering (and jeering)
As our human frailties and all
Our failings
Are we failing?
Pound pound on an endless street
Again and again the nightmare scene
All strained against the tightened rope
Not one with a lasting lingering hope
Theres evidence everywhere you see
Put a quarter down at the newsstand
So that you can read
Should I pray for an end to come
Quickly (quickly), quickly (quickly)
Or should I raise my face to the clouds above
Entreating (entreating)
Their mercy (some mercy)
But as clouds will do
Theyll rain down

There are two types of courage involved with what I did. When it comes to picking up a rifle, millions of people are capable of doing that, as we see in Iraq or Vietnam. But when it comes to risking their careers, or risking being invited to lunch by the establishment, it turns out that's remarkably rare.

Yesterday
Yesterday, the sunshine made the air glow
pushing me like a sixteen-year-old
to toss my shirt off, and run along the river shore,
splashing in the water, wading out to the reeds,
my heart an ancient Yaki drum
and I believed,
more than believed,
the air beneath trees was female blue dancers
I approached, and there in the dry leaves, in the crisp twigs,
I turned softly as if dancing with a blue woman made of air,
sunlight,
in shrub-weed skirts.
I knew the dance that would please the Gods,
I knew the dance that would make the river water
smile glistening ever silvering,
I knew the dance steps that praised my ancestors.
Yeah, I wanted to write you a poem woman
for two days,
and today it was gray and snowy and overcast,
about how I startled the mallards from their shallow
refuge beneath the Russian olive trees
and how the male purposely
came close to me
diverting my attention to it
its female love went the other way
risking its life,
that's what I saw,
the male fly before the hunter's rifles, circle in sights of hunters
and take the shots, the roaring rifle blast
after blast
and circle beyond over the fields to meet its female companion.
That's how I miss you, that's how I wanted to write you a poem
since we left
you one way
me another way. I was the male
taking with me the hunters that would harm you
risking my heart so yours wouldn't be hurt,
fronting myself as possible prey
so you could escape,
that kind of poem
I am writing you now.
Circling as hunters aim down on me
while you rise, rise, rise into the blue sky
and meet me over in the next fields.
I wanted to write you a poem for two days now
to tell you how happy I was,

Goodbye to Uncommitted Shifting Rifts
No tears delivered,
From eyes known to cry.
From eyes open wide and dried...
A sparkle comes.
No tears delivered,
From eyes known to cry.
From eyes open wide and dried now...
A sparkle comes.
A clearing of Sun has shown to begun.
Goodbye to uncommitted shifting rifts.
To go through old emotions,
Too remoted to emote.
Goodbye...
Uncommitted shifting rifts.
And those performances unsuited,
To risk a happiness.
Goodbye...
Uncommitted shifting rifts.
And those performances unsuited,
To risk a happiness...
One wishes for to come and needs.
No tears delivered,
From eyes known to cry.
From eyes open wide and dried now...
A sparkle comes.
A clearing of Sun has shown to begun.
Goodbye to uncommitted shifting rifts.
To go through old emotions,
Too remoted to emote.
Goodbye to uncommitted shifting rifts.
No need repeats restarted.
Depart...
And from this heart just leave.
No tears delivered,
From eyes known to cry.
From eyes open wide and dried...
A sparkle comes.
Goodbye to uncommitted shifting rifts.
No need repeats restarted.
Depart...
And from this heart just leave.

Crazy baboon eats flamingos (Fable) ^^^^^^^^^^^
Flamingos survive in the caustic space of the volcanic lake./
Flamingos' beaks skim tiny algae from the water's surface./
They watch out for predators like jackals or eagles, to make /
Their mud-cone nest for holding the egg with their grace./
Flamingos have a behavior because they dance in the light/
Bowing, bending their necks, signaling with their wing, /
Running back and forth and then suddenly taking flight /
To wheel around the lake, seemingly searching for something./
Recalling the ancient Phoenix myth, that immortal bird /
Who was consumed by flames, then rose from the ashes./
With such a poor sense of taste and smell as I never heard /
With long neck and legs, faint pink feathers and yellow eyes. /
Pinkish-white with red wings and two black flight feathers/
Founded throughout Africa, as well as Iran, India and Spain/
Risking from predation by marabou storks and Egyptian vultures, /
Lions, leopards, cheetahs and jackals, risking again and again./
Swimming and flying, living in mangrove swamp or lagoon/
Feeding with diatoms, seeds, crustaceans and algae/
Recognizing their chicks by vocalizations under the moon/
Caribbean with crimson or vermilion, Chilean with pink so pale./
Greater flamingos, scarlet pink colored overall, all days /
Extremely gregarious and living always in huge colonies. /
Known as social birds for their community displays /
Including 'head-flagging', 'marching' and 'wing salutes'./
The Hamadryas baboon being the largest type of monkey/
Originate from Saudi Arabia and Yemen, he is a fine mild/
Preferring rocky desert, it seems born to be chunky /
Being a very intelligent primate endangered in the wild./
With a fluffy coat, his females have a brown haired whilst /
And he is their male, silvery on his back and shoulders /
With face and buttocks brightly colored and hairless /
Eating plants, meat, grass, insects, mammals and lizards/
Dominating up to ten females at a time, grooming and playing. /
Forming clans, clans forming bands, bands forming troops./

VII. Pompilia
I am just seventeen years and five months old,
And, if I lived one day more, three full weeks;
'T is writ so in the church's register,
Lorenzo in Lucina, all my names
At length, so many names for one poor child,
—Francesca Camilla Vittoria Angela
Pompilia Comparini,—laughable!
Also 't is writ that I was married there
Four years ago: and they will add, I hope,
When they insert my death, a word or two,—
Omitting all about the mode of death,—
This, in its place, this which one cares to know,
That I had been a mother of a son
Exactly two weeks. It will be through grace
O' the Curate, not through any claim I have;
Because the boy was born at, so baptized
Close to, the Villa, in the proper church:
A pretty church, I say no word against,
Yet stranger-like,—while this Lorenzo seems
My own particular place, I always say.
I used to wonder, when I stood scarce high
As the bed here, what the marble lion meant,
With half his body rushing from the wall,
Eating the figure of a prostrate man—
(To the right, it is, of entry by the door)
An ominous sign to one baptized like me,
Married, and to be buried there, I hope.
And they should add, to have my life complete,
He is a boy and Gaetan by name—
Gaetano, for a reason,—if the friar
Don Celestine will ask this grace for me
Of Curate Ottoboni: he it was
Baptized me: he remembers my whole life
As I do his grey hair.
All these few things
I know are true,—will you remember them?
Because time flies. The surgeon cared for me,
To count my wounds,—twenty-two dagger-wounds,
Five deadly, but I do not suffer much—
Or too much pain,—and am to die to-night.
Oh how good God is that my babe was born,
—Better than born, baptized and hid away
Before this happened, safe from being hurt!
That had been sin God could not well forgive:
He was too young to smile and save himself.
When they took two days after he was born,
My babe away from me to be baptized
And hidden awhile, for fear his foe should find,—

You And I Know
They ask why do we live love die do we
Take a chance maybe ask a dance do we
Risk the pain never quite regain never
Oh we bleed the dark never miss the mark never
Well you and I know I know you and I know you and I know
You and I know I know you and I know you and I know
You and I know I know you and I know you and I know
They don't know of the place we go lover
All the blues are green nothing in between lover
And when the darkness falls through the fine glass walls lover
Oh it makes the sound of the outward bound lover
But you and I know I know you and I know you and I know
You and I know I know you and I know you and I know
You and I know I know you and I know you and I know
Oh
Well they're looking right through me
And back into themselves
And I'm thinking that they knew me
When they laugh at someone else
Well you and I know I know you and I know you and I know
You and I know I know you and I know you and I know
You and I know I know you and I know you and I know

You Know Where You Went Wrong
(tennant/lowe)
---------------
Two men on the street
Drinking something cheap
No home, no family
Its cold, nowhere to sleep
Passers-by never catch their eye
Anywhere, one man drinks, the other swears
You know where you went wrong
You know where you went wrong
(aaaah) you know
You know where you went wrong
You know where you went wrong
(aaaah) you know
The old man cant understand
No one will shake his hand
I gave security, bombs and colour tv
It cost a few lives
Someones son always dies
No one shakes his hand
He dont understand
You know where you went wrong
You know where you went wrong
(aaaah) you know
You know where you went wrong
You know where you went wrong
(aaaah) you know
This is the history of the world
Of every boy and every girl
Who dont understand whats going on anymore
The history of the world
Of every boy and every girl
Who dont understand whats going on anymore
(whats going on? )
Two girls have a photograph
One looks, the other laughs
He could have been mine
Why did I change my mind?
Then hands on hips
The other girl says: admit! admit!
You know where you went wrong
You know where you went wrong
(aaaah) you know
You know where you went wrong
You know where you went wrong
(aaaah) you know
This is the history of the world (of the world)
Of every boy and every girl
Who dont (who dont) understand (understand)
Whats going on anymore (whats going on? )

IX. Juris Doctor Johannes-Baptista Bottinius, Fisci et Rev. Cam. Apostol. Advocatus
Had I God's leave, how I would alter things!
If I might read instead of print my speech,—
Ay, and enliven speech with many a flower
Refuses obstinate to blow in print,
As wildings planted in a prim parterre,—
This scurvy room were turned an immense hall;
Opposite, fifty judges in a row;
This side and that of me, for audience—Rome:
And, where yon window is, the Pope should hide—
Watch, curtained, but peep visibly enough.
A buzz of expectation! Through the crowd,
Jingling his chain and stumping with his staff,
Up comes an usher, louts him low, "The Court
"Requires the allocution of the Fisc!"
I rise, I bend, I look about me, pause
O'er the hushed multitude: I count—One, two—
Have ye seen, Judges, have ye, lights of law,—
When it may hap some painter, much in vogue
Throughout our city nutritive of arts,
Ye summon to a task shall test his worth,
And manufacture, as he knows and can,
A work may decorate a palace-wall,
Afford my lords their Holy Family,—
Hath it escaped the acumen of the Court
How such a painter sets himself to paint?
Suppose that Joseph, Mary and her Babe
A-journeying to Egypt, prove the piece:
Why, first he sedulously practiseth,
This painter,—girding loin and lighting lamp,—
On what may nourish eye, make facile hand;
Getteth him studies (styled by draughtsmen so)
From some assistant corpse of Jew or Turk
Or, haply, Molinist, he cuts and carves,—
This Luca or this Carlo or the like.
To him the bones their inmost secret yield,
Each notch and nodule signify their use:
On him the muscles turn, in triple tier,
And pleasantly entreat the entrusted man
"Familiarize thee with our play that lifts
"Thus, and thus lowers again, leg, arm and foot!"
—Ensuring due correctness in the nude.
Which done, is all done? Not a whit, ye know!
He,—to art's surface rising from her depth,—
If some flax-polled soft-bearded sire be found,
May simulate a Joseph, (happy chance!)—
Limneth exact each wrinkle of the brow,
Loseth no involution, cheek or chap,
Till lo, in black and white, the senior lives!
Is it a young and comely peasant-nurse

I Need To Know
Well the talk on the street
Says you might go solo
A good friend of mine saw you leavin by the back door
I need to know(I need to know)
I need to know(I need to know)
If you think youre gonna leave
Then you better say so
I need to know(I need to know)
I need to know(I need to know)
Because I dont know how long
I can hold on
And if your makin me wait
If youre leadin me on
I need to know(I need to know)
I need to know(I need to know)
Who woulda thought
That youd fall for his line
All of a sudden its
Me on the outside
I need to know(I need to know)
I need to know(I need to know)
If you think youre gonna leave
Then you better say so
I need to know(I need to know)
I need to know(I need to know)
Because I dont know how long
I can hold on
And if your makin me wait
If youre leadin me on
I ne ed to know(I need to know)
I need to know(I need to know)
I need to know(I need to know)
I need to know(I need to know)
If you think youre gonna leave
Then you better say so
I need to know(I need to know)
I need to know( I need to know)
Because I dont know how long
I can hold on
And if your makin me wait
If youre leadin me on
I need to know(I need to know)
I need to know(I need to know)

Let Me Know
I get a little peck and you're after to bed
No warmth, no hug, no kind words are said
Will you dream of me or someone new instead, oh
Just love me and mean it, i'll follow you blind
Lately i feel like a heart left behind
I just can't stand still till you make up your mind
Let me know, let me know, i have a right
Before you touch me one more night
Have i won your love or have i lost the fight
Let me know, let me know, i have a right
To plan my future, get on with my life
Tell me face to face, don't try to be polite
I'll take it, i'll make it
Ooh, yes, i will
Ooh, yeah, yeah, yeah
Listen, listen
I'm livin' each minute with all that i've got
Each breath is in pardon, each heartbeat is hot
That's the way we were way back, you forgot [he forgot, he forgot], ooh
You leave me so empty, it's makin' me sad
To know that our good thing has turned for the bad
Both of us are here, but where's the love we had
Let me know, let me know, i have a right
Before you touch me one more night
Have i won your love or have i lost the fight
Let me know, let me know, i have a right
To plan my future, get on with my life
Tell me face to face, don't try to be polite
Let me know, let me know
Let me know, let me know, i have a right
To plan my future, get on with my life
Tell me face to face, don't try to be polite
I'll take it
Heaven knows i'll make it
I get a little peck and you're after to bed
No warmth, no hug, and no kind words are said
Will you dream of me or someone new instead, listen
Just love me and mean it, i'll follow you blind
Lately i feel like a heart left behind
I just can't stand still till you make up your mind, listen
I get a little peck and you're after to bed
No warmth, no hug, no kind words are said
Will you dream of me or someone new instead, oh
Just love me and mean it, i'll follow you blind
But lately i feel like a heart left behind
I just can't stand still till you make up your mind
Let me know, let me know, i have a right
Before you touch me one more night
Have i won your love or have i lost the fight
Let me know, let me know, i have a right

You Got Me
I get shy around you
Dont know what to say
I dont know what to do
cause you do something to me
That I cant describe baby
Always catch myself thinkin bout
The things you do
There aint no one else
I got my heart set on you
You really got me, baby its true
You know you got me
So in love
You know you got me
Daydreamin bout us
You know you got me
Starry eyed and elated
You know you got me
Whenever you want me baby
You know you got me
Hypnotized
You know you got me
With you on my mind
You know you got me
Feeling intoxicated
You know you got me
Whenever you want me baby
Boy Im entangled up in you
These feelings I just cant elude
cause youre so captivating
That I inadvertantly
Always catch myself thinkin bout
The things you do
There aint no one else
I got my heart set on you
You really got me, baby its true
You know you got me
So in love
You know you got me
Daydreamin bout us
You know you got me
Starry eyed and elated
You know you got me
Whenever you want me baby
You know you got me
Hypnotized
You know you got me
With you on my mind
You know you got me
Feeling intoxicated
You know you got me
