As I get older, I've learned to listen to people rather than accuse them of things.

Listen listen
Listen listen
Listen listen
Listen listen
Listen (listen) listen (listen)
Listen (listen) listen (listen)
Listen (listen) listen (listen)
Listen listen
Listen to each drop of rain (listen listen)
Aaah
Whispering secrets in rain (listen listen)
Aaah
Frantically searching for someone to hear
That story be more than it hides
Please don't let go
Can't we stay for a while?
It's just to hard to say goodbye
Listen to the rain
Aa...ah
Listen listen listen listen listen listen to the rain
Weeping
Oo...ooh oooh ooh oo...ooh
Oo...ooh oooh oh oh
Listen (listen) listen (listen)
Listen (listen) listen
I stand alone in the storm (listen listen)
Suddenly sweet words take hold
(Listen listen)
Hurry they stay for you haven't much time
Open your eyes to the love around you
You can feel youre alone
But I'm here still with you
You can do what you dream
Just remember to listen to the rain
oo...ooh oh oh oh oh
ooh ooh oh oh oooh

Talk Soup

I dated siamese twins
I slept with bigfoot, too
Get me on sally jesse
Put me on donahue
cause I wanna tell the world about it
Right now
My dogs a narcoleptic
My moms a circus freak
I gotta get a spot on
Geraldos show this week
cause I wanna tell the world about it
Right now
Im just an anorexic codependant bingo addict
Stripper born without a chin
And Im only comfortable talking about it
When the whole wide world is listening in
Talk soup... talk soup
Listen to me, (listen to me) listen to me, (listen to me) listen to me
My wife ran off with elvis
My boss shaved off my hair
Ive got a thing for poodles
And rubber underwear
And I wanna tell the world about it
Right now
I had a close encounter
I never chew my food
I got eleven nose jobs
I yodel in the nude
And I wanna tell the world about it
Right now
Im just a cross-dressin alcoholic neo-nazi
Porno star, as you may have guessed
And Im really gonna feel a whole lot better
If you let me get this thing off my chest
Talk soup... talk soup
Listen to me, (listen to me) listen to me, (listen to me) listen to me
Im just your average schizophrenic nymphomaniac
Albino go-go dancer, you see
Nothin so bad that I cant share it
With a billion friends on national tv, whoa...
I have no genitalia
I sold my kids for cheese
I love my blow up doll, so
Bring out those cameras, please
cause I wanna tell the world about it
Right now
Talk soup... talk soup
Listen to me, (listen to me) listen to me, (listen to me) listen to me
Talk soup... talk soup
Listen to me, (listen to me) listen to me, (listen to me) listen to me

I've learned

Ive learned that to love someone doesnt have to involve pain,
Ive learned that to have a friend you must be a friend first,
Ive learned that in time youll see your mistakes and learn from them,
Ive learned that to be alone sometimes is the best thing for you,
Ive learned that in order to love a person you must feel loved,
Ive learned that if your wrong admit it or youll never forgive yourself,
Ive learned that your first love will be a part of you and you may never forget,
Ive learned that in order to move on you must fix what was first wrong,
Ive learned that if you ever mess up, you can always start over again,
Ive learned that to be 'cool' doesnt involve pressure,
Ive learned to accept what I have and be happy,
Ive learned that people will come and go so tell the ones you love how you feel,
Ive learned that to respect yourself you must respect others,
Ive learned that your actions always involve consequences whether it be good or bad,
Ive learned that priceless words can mean the world to someone,
Ive learned that sometimes being silent is the best solution,
Ive learned to expect the unexpected,
Ive learned that healing a broken heart involves tears and pain,
Ive learned to see the world in the eyes of others,
And Ive learned that each new day is a day to touch a life.

Any Soldier To His Son

What did I do, sonny, in the Great World War?
Well, I learned to peel potatoes and to scrub the barrack floor.
I learned to push a barrow and I learned to swing a pick,
I learned to turn my toes out, and to make my eyeballs click.
I learned the road to Folkestone, and I watched the English shore,
Go down behind the skyline, as I thought, for evermore.
And the Blighty boats went by us and the harbour hove in sight,
And they landed us and sorted us and marched us "by the right".
"Quick march!" across the cobbles, by the kids who rang along
Singing "Appoo?" "Spearmant" "Shokolah?" through dingy old Boulogne;
By the widows and the nurses and the niggers and Chinese,
And the gangs of smiling Fritzes, as saucy as you please.

I learned to ride as soldiers ride from Etaps to the Line,
For days and nights in cattle trucks, packed in like droves of swine.
I learned to curl and kip it on a foot of muddy floor,
And to envy cows and horses that have beds of beaucoup straw.
I learned to wash in shell holes and to shave myself in tea,
While the fragments of a mirror did a balance on my knee.
I learned to dodge the whizz-bangs and the flying lumps of lead,
And to keep a foot of earth between the sniper and my head.
I learned to keep my haversack well filled with buckshee food,
To take the Army issue and to pinch what else I could.
I learned to cook Maconochie with candle-ends and string,
With "four-by-two" and sardine-oil and any God-dam thing.
I learned to use my bayonet according as you please
For a breadknife or a chopper or a prong for toasting cheese.
I learned "a first field dressing" to serve my mate and me
As a dish-rag and a face-rag and a strainer for our tea.
I learned to gather souvenirs that home I hoped to send,
And hump them round for months and months and dump them in the end.
I learned to hunt for vermin in the lining of my shirt,
To crack them with my finger-nail and feel the beggars spirt;
I learned to catch and crack them by the dozen and the score
And to hunt my shirt tomorrow and to find as many more.

I learned to sleep by snatches on the firestep of a trench,
And to eat my breakfast mixed with mud and Fritz's heavy stench.
I learned to pray for Blighty ones and lie and squirm with fear,
When Jerry started strafing and the Blighty ones were near.
I learned to write home cheerful with my heart a lump of lead
With the thought of you and mother, when she heard that I was dead.
And the only thing like pleasure over there I ever knew,
Was to hear my pal come shouting, "There's a parcel, mate, for you."

So much for what I did do - now for what I have not done:
Well, I never kissed a French girl and I never killed a Hun,
I never missed an issue of tobacco, pay, or rum,
I never made a friend and yet I never lacked a chum.
I never borrowed money, and I never lent - but once

Older

Youre older that youve ever been
And now youre even older
And now youre even older
And now youre even older
Youre older that youve ever been
And now youre even older
And now youre older still
Time - is marching on
And time - is still marching on
This day will soon be at an end
And now its even sooner
And now its even sooner
And now its even sooner
This day will soon be at an end
And now its even sooner

Who To Listen To

Dont take a ride from a stranger,
No way to know where they go.
You may be left on a long dark road,
Lost and alone.
Dont you recall what your mama told?
Youve got to learn hot from cold.
When youre afraid that you might get burned,
Where do you turn?
Youve got to know who to, (who to)
Who not to listen to.
Youve gotta know who to, (ooooh....)
Who not to listen to.
Well, you know, theyre gonna hit you from all sides,
Better make up your mind
Who to, who not to listen to.
(who to listen to.)
How can you learn what is true and just?
How to know who to trust?
Here comes a man with a scam to sell.
How can you tell?
Youve gotta know theres a bigger plan,
Room to fall, room to stand.
Pray for the plan to begin in you;
Keep your heart true.
Youve got to know who to, (who to)
Who not to listen to.
Youve gotta know who to,
Who not to listen to. (who to listen to.)
Well, you know, theyre gonna hit you from all sides,
Better make up your mind
Who to, who not to listen to.
Its gonna hit you from all sides,
Better make up your mind
Who to, (who to), who not to listen to.
Everyone will have their words to say....
Find the word to help you find your way....
(yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah...yeah...ah....)
Youve got to know who to, (who to)
Who not to listen to.
Youve gotta know who to,
Who not to listen to. (who to listen to.)
Well, you know, theyre gonna hit you from all sides,
Better make up your mind
Who to, who not to listen to.
Theyre gonna hit you from all sides,
Better make up your mind
Who to, who not to listen to. (who to listen to.)
Theyre gonna hit you from all sides.
Hit you from all sides,
Better make up your mind

Stop Look & Listen

I was walking down the street
Just the other day
I caught a glimpse
Of life vivid reality
I saw a man on the street
Had no clothes or shoes
These are signs of the times
Thats what they say
Everybody better
Stop look and listen
Stop look and listen
Stop look and listen
To your heart
The prophets of the times
Are written on street car walls
Cant you see them crying
Cant you hear them call
Mother mother children still
Got to grow
Father father where do we go
Stop look and listen
Stop look and listen
Stop look and listen
To your heart
Space age assures us life will
Go on
And everybody trying to believe
Forget the future
Think about right now
Somehow seem to be growing
Theme
Prophets of the times
Are written on street car walls
Cant you see them crying
Cant you hear them calling
Mother mother children still have
To grow
Father father where do we go
Stop look and listen
Stop look and listen
Stop look and listen
To your heart
Space age assures us life will
Go on
Everybody trying to believe
Forget the future
Think about right now
Everybody better
Stop look and listen
Stop look and listen

First Year University Expereinces

I learned why it is not wise to skip class often

I learned that skipping homework in university is not the same as skipping homework in high school

I learned what it feels like to be awake for over 2 days

I learned how to smoke pot from a bong

I learned how to compose an essay the day before it's due

I learned that the Freshman 15 is no joke

I learned how to do laundry

I learned to pretend to be happy

I learned to multitask

I learned to be more sociable

I learned why my parents and teachers warned me about the difficulty of university

I learned that failing is expensive

I learned small things, like freshly washed bed sheets, make me happy
I learned to lie

I learned how expensive alcohol is

I learned what it feels like to be a failure

I type this rant while skipping my business ethics class as I further delay the composition of my psychology term paper

John Dryden

Absalom and Achitophel

In pious times, e'er Priest-craft did begin,
Before Polygamy was made a sin;
When man, on many, multiply'd his kind,
E'r one to one was, cursedly, confind:
When Nature prompted, and no law deny'd
Promiscuous use of Concubine and Bride;
Then, Israel's monarch, after Heaven's own heart,
His vigorous warmth did, variously, impart
To Wives and Slaves; And, wide as his Command,
Scatter'd his Maker's Image through the Land.
Michal, of Royal blood, the Crown did wear,
A Soyl ungratefull to the Tiller's care;
Not so the rest; for several Mothers bore
To Godlike David, several Sons before.
But since like slaves his bed they did ascend,
No True Succession could their seed attend.
Of all this Numerous Progeny was none
So Beautifull, so brave as Absalon:
Whether, inspir'd by some diviner Lust,
His father got him with a greater Gust;
Or that his Conscious destiny made way
By manly beauty to Imperiall sway.
Early in Foreign fields he won Renown,
With Kings and States ally'd to Israel's Crown
In Peace the thoughts of War he could remove,
And seem'd as he were only born for love.
What e'er he did was done with so much ease,
In him alone, 'twas Natural to please.
His motions all accompanied with grace;
And Paradise was open'd in his face.
With secret Joy, indulgent David view'd
His Youthfull Image in his Son renew'd:
To all his wishes Nothing he deny'd,
And made the Charming Annabel his Bride.
What faults he had (for who from faults is free?)
His Father could not, or he would not see.
Some warm excesses, which the Law forbore,
Were constru'd Youth that purg'd by boyling o'r:
And Amnon's Murther, by a specious Name,
Was call'd a Just Revenge for injur'd Fame.
Thus Prais'd, and Lov'd, the Noble Youth remain'd,
While David, undisturb'd, in Sion raign'd.
But Life can never be sincerely blest:
Heaven punishes the bad, and proves the best.
The Jews, a Headstrong, Moody, Murmuring race,
As ever try'd th' extent and stretch of grace;
God's pamper'd people whom, debauch'd with ease,
No King could govern, nor no God could please;
(Gods they had tri'd of every shape and size
That Gods-smiths could produce, or Priests devise.)

Before You Accuse Me

Before you accuse me, take a look at yourself.
Before you accuse me, take a look at yourself.
You say Ive been buyin another woman clothes,
But youve been talkin to someone else.
I called your mama bout three or four nights ago.
I called your mama bout three or four nights ago.
Your mama said, son,
Dont call my daughter no more.
Before you accuse me, take a look at yourself.
Before you accuse me, take a look at yourself.
You say Ive been buyin another woman clothes,
But youve been takin money from someone else.
Come on back home, baby; try my love one more time.
Come on back home, baby; try my love one more time.
Youve been gone away so long,
Im just about to lose my mind.
Before you accuse me, take a look at yourself.
Before you accuse me, take a look at yourself.
You say Ive been buyin another woman clothes,
But youve been talkin to someone else.

I Love My Man

verse 1:
See I finally found me a good man
matter of fact he might be my future husband
yeah he really knows how to love me
and he can't get enough of me
oh yeah he's got class and good looks
by the way he's number one in my book
I prayed for a love and he appeared
no girl got a man like this here
chorus:
So I ain't gonna nag and I ain't gonna trip
I ain't gonna do any arguing
cause I love my man
and I plan on keeping him
so I'm not gonna accuse my man of lust
and I'm gonna trust him let me tell you why
cause I love my man
and I plan on keeping him
verse 2:
No the other guys just don't compare
to my man's good love honey i swear
he's got my back in the time of need
it's good to know that he's there for me
let me say all that he knows my heart
and it means it was love
at the very start when i saw him
with my girlfriends
so I knew I was keeping him
chorus:
So I ain't gonna nag and I ain't gonna trip
I ain't gonna do any arguing
cause I love my man
and I plan on keeping him
so I'm not gonna accuse my man of lust
and I'm gonna trust him let me tell you why
cause I love my man
and I plan on keeping him
So I ain't gonna nag and I ain't gonna trip
I ain't gonna do any arguing
cause I love my man
and I plan on keeping him
so I'm not gonna accuse my man of lust
and I'm gonna trust him let me tell you why
cause I love my man
and I plan on keeping him
bridge:
I know that he loves me and his love is pure
so I don't have a reason to be insecure
ooh, I, love my baby, baby
ooh, I, love my baby

Virginia's Story

Elizabeth Gates-Wooten is my Grand mom.

She was born in Canada with her father and brothers.
They owned a Barber Shoppe.
I don't remember exactly where in Canada.
I believe it was right over the border like Windsor or Toronto.
I never knew exactly where it was.

When she was old enough she got married.

First, she married a man by the name of Frank Gates.
He was from Madagascar.
He fathered my mom and her brother and sister.
The boy's name was Frank Gates, Jr.
Two girls name were Anna and Agnes.

Agnes was my mother.

Frank Gates went crazy after the war
He drank a lot and died
Then grandma Elizabeth married a man by the name of Mr. Wooten.
He had a German name, but I don't think he was German.
She took his last name after they got married.

Then they moved to West Virginia in the United States.

Their son, Frank Gates Jr. Became a delegate in the democratic party.
He use to get into a lot of trouble because he liked to fight.
He was a delegate from the 1940's to 1970's.
He died of gout in the 1970's.

Anna was a maid and cook.

She baked cakes and stuff for people as a side line.
She had a hump on her back (scoliosis) .
She had to walk with a cane.
She could cook good though.
She did this kind of work all of her life, just like her mom, Elizabeth

They were both good cooks

They had a lot of money because they had these skills
Especially when people had parties.
Because they would make all of this food and then they would have left-overs.
We got to eat a lot of stuff we normally wouldn't get because of that.
When they cooked, they didn't use no measuring stuff, they would just use there hand.

My moms name was Agnes Barrie Gates.

She married James Wright and moved to Cleveland.

The Sound Of Wings.....

from the bars of the cell,
i learned freedom from the body.
from the underside of the bridge,
i learned home has not a house.
from forty years of working,
i learned the bitterness of the slave.
from the political lies,
i learned that truth cant be bought.
from the books i read,
i learned to reason and question.
from the heroin needle,
i learned the value of life.
from love lost,
i learned how to love.
from doubt i learned seeking,
in seeking i found god to be more.
from the scars on my heart,
i learned to be a man.
from battles fought and lost,
i learned the need for peace.
from discrimination i learned equality,
from anger i learned forgiveness.
from the mirror i learned responsibility...
from the bars of the cell,
i learned the sound of wings!

Listen To Love

Baby close your eyes, listen to love
See what dreams are made of
Oh, and if one kiss
Speaks to us like this
Why resist it, baby, listen to love
The voices of reason
Say not to leap in
They tell me be careful, friend
Dont get burned again
But when I feel your heartbeat
I know something beautiful is starting
We need to believe in
Baby close your eyes, listen to love
See what dreams are made of
Oh, and if one kiss
Speaks to us like this
Why resist it, baby, listen to love
Venus rose out of the sea
Looking for you and me
She showed us the stars above
Said all we need is love
Its no time to be modest
Give it up, surrender to the goddess
You know in your heart its true
Baby, shes calling you
Come on now, come on now, come on now
Tell me you can hear it
Come on now, come on now
Open up your heart, listen to love
The stuff that dreams are made of
Oh and if one touch
Can reveal so much
Dont you know weve got to listen to love
Baby close your eyes, listen to love
See what dreams are made of
Oh, and if one kiss
Speaks to us like this
Why resist it, baby, listen to love
Why resist it, baby, listen
Listen to love
Come on now, come on now, come on now
Tell me you can hear it
Come on now, come on now
Open up your heart, listen to love
The stuff that dreams are made of

I wanna thank y'all for coming to see the preacher's son tonight (thank you)
Fellas, hold on to your girl right now
Yeah right now we're gonna slow the whole dancefloor down
Oh yeah, take it back to the old school, let's go
Baby, let me holla at you
You know there's no greater love
Than a woman who loves a man
And a man who loves a woman, ah yeah
I wanna love ya
And I ain't talking trash neither, ey
This is something that I can feel deep in my soul, oh, oh
We gonna listen to some Marvin
We gonna listen to some Isley
We gonna listen to some Teddy Pendergrass (Pendergrass)
Ooh, once I got you in the mood
I wanna introduce myself to you
We gonna listen to Smokey
We gonna listen to Stevie
We gonna listen to Donny Hathaway
Ooh, would you please lay your body next to mine, ah yeah
Doggy, and I ain't talking bout my pitbull neither
I'm talking about the first lady
That was there in the beginning when your daughter wasn't with it, oh yeah
I wanna love ya
And I ain't talking trash neither, ey
This is something that I can feel deep in my soul, oh, oh
We gonna listen to some Marvin (Marvin)

Yeah, I'm a young man with an old school, girl
But then you told me a good woman
Is worth more than diamonds and precious pearls
Yeah, yeah, yeah
So lay back, and let me massage you, everywhere now
I can feel them move with your body
Harder, harder, harder, harder, harder
You make me so hot
We gonna listen to some Marvin
We gonna listen to some Isley
We gonna listen to some Teddy Pendergrass (Pendergrass)
Ooh, once I got you in the mood

The Prophets Song

Words and music by brian may
Oh oh people of the earth
Listen to the warning the seer he said
Beware the storm that gathers here
Listen to the wise man
I dreamed I saw on a moonlit stair
Spreading his hand to the multitude there
A man who cried for a love gone stale
And ice cold hearts of charity bare
I watched as fear took the old mans gaze
Hopes of the young in troubled graves
i see no day I heard him say
So grey is the face of every mortal
Oh oh people of the earth!
listen to the warning the prophet he said
For soon the cold of night will fall
Summoned by your own hand
Ah ah children of the land
Quicken to the new life take my hand
Fly and find the new green bough
Return like the white dove
He told of death as a bone white haze
Taking the lost and the unloved babes
Late too late all the wretches run
These kings of beasts now counting their days
From mothers love is the son estranged
Married his own his precious gain
The earth will shake in two will break
And death all round will be your dowry
Oh oh people of the earth
Listen to the warning the seer he said
For those who hear and mark my words
Listen to the good plan
Oh oh oh oh and two by two my human zoo
Theyll be running for to come
Running for to come out of the rain
Oh flee for your lives who heed me not
Let all your treasures make you fear for your life
Deceive you not the fires of hell will take you
Should death await you
Ah people can you hear me?
And now I know and now I know
And now I know and now I know
That you can hear me
And now I know and now I know
And now I know now I know
Now I know now I know
Now I know now I know
Now I know
The earth will shake in two will break

All Different, But Still The Same

Some people have short hair, some have long.
Some people have thick hair; some people’s hair is all gone.

Some people have black hair, some have gray.
Some people have brown hair, some blonde, some red.
Some people’s hair a color unsaid.

Some people are short, some people are tall.
Some people will love you; some won’t like you at all.

Some people like hot weather, some like cold.
Some people are timid, some people are bold.
Some people have dark skin, some people have light.
Some people have black skin, some people have white.

Some people eat meat; some won’t touch it at all.
Some people have a good memory, some can’t recall.
Some people accept Christ, some never will.
Some people are stingy, some people give.

Some people like school, some people don’t.
Some people will excel, some people won’t.
Some people smoke cigarettes, some never will.
Some people are honest, some people steal.

Some people have book knowledge;
But don’t know the Holy Book.
Some people burn food, some people can cook.

Some people are old, some people are young.
Some people do smart things, some people do dumb.

Some people just have a diploma
Some people have degrees.
Some people do things slow, some with a breeze.
Some people are complainers, some easy to please.

Some people hate shopping, some stay in the mall.
Some people hate God, but God loves us all.

We are all different, but still the same.

When I get cut, I bleed red;
You get cut, red blood you’ll shed.

Some people are plump, some people are thin.
But we are all the same, we’re all human being.

Mandolin Rain

(bruce hornsby/john hornsby)
The song came and went
Like the times that we spent
Hiding out from the rain under the carnival tent
Id laugh and hed smile
And it would last for a while
You dont know what you got til you lose it all again
Listen to the mandolin rain, listen to the music on the lake
Listen to my heart break, every time that he goes away
Listen to the banjo wind, a sad song drifting low
Listen to my tears roll, down my face as he turns to go
A cool evening dance
Listening to the bluegrass band takes the chill
From the air til they play the last song
And Ill do my time
Keeping you off my mind but theres moments
That I find, Im not feeling so strong
Listen to the mandolin rain, listen to the music on the lake
Listen to my heart break, every time that he goes away
Listen to the banjo wind, a sad song drifting low
Listen to my tears roll, down my face as he turns to go
Running down by the lakeshore
He did love the sound of a summer storm
It played on the lake like a mandolin
Now its washing him away once again
Once again, once again
Listen to the mandolin rain, listen to the music on the lake
Listen to my heart break, every time that he goes away
Listen to the banjo wind, a sad song drifting low
Listen to my tears roll, down my face as he turns to go
Listen to my tears roll, down my face as he turns to go
