Ive Been Thinking About You

- m. carey - d. cole - r. civils -
Uh baby
Weve known each other
For a long long time
But I never really noticed
All the magic in your eyes
Ive been around you
A thousand times before
And youve always been a friend to me
But now Im wanting more
I must have been so blind
I never realized
Youre the one thats right for me
All the while I couldnt see
And now I feel so strange
Ill never be the same
Going round and round in circles
And I dont know what to do
cause baby
Ive been thinking about you
In the most peculiar way
Ive been thinking about you
Its unbelievable to me
But suddenly I think
Im falling in love with you
Theres no explaining how I feel inside
Im going thru a transformation
Thats so hard for me to hide
I had a revelation that
Finally opened up my eyes
The one I spent a lifetime searching for
Was right here all the time
I was oblivious so very out of touch
All the while I couldnt see
Youre the one thats right for me
And now my world has changed
Ill never be the same
Going round and round in circles
And its all because of you
Sweet baby
Ive been thinking about you
In the most peculiar way
Ive been thinking about you
Its unbelievable to me
But suddenly I think

Peculiar Situation

(clarke / hicks / nash)
We take walks in storms on rainy nights
When its cold I hold you close to me
When we dine you help me choose the wine
Its these things that mean so much to me
Aint this a peculiar situation
Were lovers but we dont make love
But when these things mean so much to us
Well, thats all right
I dont think your father is too rich
And I know your mother has good taste
And its not because youre beautiful
When youre busy you find time for me
Aint this a peculiar situation
Were lovers but we dont make love
But when these things mean so much to us
Well, thats all right
But when these things mean so much to us
Well, thats all right
You do well at things that interest you
When asked out you never turn away
If youre wrong you dont mind saying so
Not too proud to phone me when youre down
Aint this a peculiar situation
Were lovers but we dont make love
But when these things mean so much to us
Well, thats all right
Aint this a peculiar situation
Aint this a peculiar situation
Aint this a peculiar situation

Aint That Peculiar

By william robinson, warren moore, marvin tarplin and robert rodgers
You do me wrong and still Im crazy bout you
Stay away too long and I cant do without you
Every chance you get you seem to hurt me more and more
But each hurt just makes my love stronger than before
I know flowers grow through rain
But how can love grow through pain
Chorus:
Aint that peculiar
A peculiarity
Aint that peculiar baby
Peculiar as can be
You tell me lies that should be obvious to me
But Im in so much love with you baby that I dont want to see
That the things you do and say are designed to make me blue
Its a doggone shame my love for you makes all your lies seem true
If the truth makes love last longer
Why do lies make love stronger
Chorus:
Aint that peculiar
A peculiarity
Aint that peculiar baby
Peculiar as can be

I Never Thought It Peculiar

By tommy boyce and bobby hart
I never thought it peculiar
That you never gave me a smile.
I wasnt socially suited
To make it worth your while.
Oh no and I never thought it peculiar
That my heart always beat like a drum.
Each time I would see you walk by me
You were as pretty as they come.
So I sent some flowers to your doorstep.
And wrote on the card I love you.
I dont know why but I do know that i
Had a feeling that you liked me too.
So I never thought it peculiar
When you stopped to ask me the time.
And I dont think its terribly peculiar
That now, little girl, you are mine.
That now, little girl, you are mine.
That now, little girl, you are mine.

A Most Peculiar Man

He was A Most Peculiar Man.
That's what Mrs. Riordan said and she should know;
She lived upstairs from him
She said he was A Most Peculiar Man.
He was A Most Peculiar Man.
The lived all alone within a house,
Within a room, within himself,
A Most Peculiar Man.
He had no friends, he seldom spoke
And no one in turn ever spoke to him,
'Cause he wasn't friendly and he didn't care
And he wasn't like them.
Oh, no! he was A Most Peculiar Man.
He died last Saturday.
He turned on the gas and he went to sleep
With the windows closed so he'd never wake up
To his silent world and his tiny room;
And Mrs. Riordan says he has a brother somewhere
Who should be notified soon.
And all the people said, "What a shame that he's dead,
But wasn't he A Most Peculiar Man?

The Interpretation of Nature and

I.

MAN, being the servant and interpreter of Nature, can do and understand so much and so much only as he has observed in fact or in thought of the course of nature: beyond this he neither knows anything nor can do anything.

II.

Neither the naked hand nor the understanding left to itself can effect much. It is by instruments and helps that the work is done, which are as much wanted for the understanding as for the hand. And as the instruments of the hand either give motion or guide it, so the instruments of the mind supply either suggestions for the understanding or cautions.

III.

Human knowledge and human power meet in one; for where the cause is not known the effect cannot be produced. Nature to be commanded must be obeyed; and that which in contemplation is as the cause is in operation as the rule.

IV.

Towards the effecting of works, all that man can do is to put together or put asunder natural bodies. The rest is done by nature working within.

V.

The study of nature with a view to works is engaged in by the mechanic, the mathematician, the physician, the alchemist, and the magician; but by all (as things now are) with slight endeavour and scanty success.

VI.

It would be an unsound fancy and self-contradictory to expect that things which have never yet been done can be done except by means which have never yet been tried.

VII.

The productions of the mind and hand seem very numerous in books and manufactures. But all this variety lies in an exquisite subtlety and derivations from a few things already known; not in the number of axioms.

VIII.

Moreover the works already known are due to chance and experiment rather than to sciences; for the sciences we now possess are merely systems for the nice ordering and setting forth of things already invented; not methods of invention or directions for new works.

IX.

The cause and root of nearly all evils in the sciences is this -- that while we falsely admire and extol the powers of the human mind we neglect to seek for its true helps.

X.

The subtlety of nature is greater many times over than the subtlety of the senses and understanding; so that all those specious meditations, speculations, and glosses in which men indulge are quite from the purpose, only there is no one by to observe it.

XI.

As the sciences which we now have do not help us in finding out new works, so neither does the logic which we now have help us in finding out new sciences.

XII.

The logic now in use serves rather to fix and give stability to the errors which have their foundation in commonly received notions than to help the search after truth. So it does more harm than good.

XIII.

Funny You Should Say That

Lead vocal: the flying pickets
Well its funny you should say that
Its a most peculiar thing
Yes its funny you should say that
I was talking to a man
And I saw he wore a ring
Yes its funny you should say that
And I told him of a dream
Where I caught and ate a whale
Then I woke up feeling hungry, he said
Thats a curious tale
For a dream contains a wish
In this case a giant fish
As the pressure you were under
Might have woken you from slumber
To relieve the pangs of hunger
You just dreamed yourself a dish
Well its funny you should say that
Its a most peculiar thing
Yes its funny you should say that
For I also met a man
And he also wore a ring
Yes its funny you should say that
And I told him of a dream
Where the sun was at its height
But my toes were blocks of ice, he said
Let me get this right
You are tall and so your feet
Must protrude beyond the sheet
While you sleep theyre unprotected
And its just as I suspected
You were trying to dream some heat
But there are six white wolves
In the dead of the night
On the branch of a tree
And they have such big eyes
And theyre shining so bright
All the better to see
And they have such big ears
All the better to hear
And theyre listening to me
And they have such sharp teeth
All the better to eat
And theyre looking at me
Well its funny you should say that
Its a most peculiar thing
Yes its funny you should say that
I was speaking to a man
But I dont recall a ring
Yes its funny you should say that

How Lucky You Are

When you speak you speak to me
When you sleep you sleep by me
When you wake you wake with me
When you walk you follow two steps behind in life
Shadows stalking, ever grasping sinking for a need
It wasnt love it was the fix of never wanting me
Now Im gone, youre tossing and you turning in your sleep
Thats the name of the game, of the game, of the game
Cry, miss peculiar
Youll cry all the more, now Im gone
I was the monkey on your back
Take a look at how lucky you are
When you speak you speak to me
When you sleep you sleep by me
When you wake you wake with me
When you walk you follow two steps behind
Cry, cry, miss peculiar
Youll cry all the more, now Im gone
I was the monkey on your back
Take a look at how lucky you are
Some days are heaven, I will not deny
Probing the daylight cascading the skyline
Tripping and diving and losing it all
Back came the night time living for more
Cry, cry, miss peculiar
Youll cry all the more, now that Im gone
I was the devil monkey on your back
Take a look at how lucky you are
When you speak you speak to me
When you sleep you sleep by me
When you wake you wake with me
When you walk you follow two steps behind
La la la la la

Peculiar is my..

Peculiar is my mind
As of a opinion here..

Those squirrels percuss
When in solo each
My heart stretches its ears..
Cannot profess notating
Nor can syllable the screeches
Those captivating tones
Enchanting in variable meters
Sounding in chiseling stony tone..
When I opine of it so..
'Peculiar is my mind'
As of a opinion here

I like their rhythmicity..
Their tala patterns
Permutated to different sets
Screechings one, two, three
Combined with five, seven, nine
There goes a percussion concert
In congregational bands all around
Those squirrels rock tree to tree
Irresistable my admiration comments
'Have they morsing(jews harp) in their mouths'

'Peculiar is my mind'
As of a opinion here

The Pleasures of Imagination: Book The Third

What wonder therefore, since the indearing ties
Of passion link the universal kind
Of man so close, what wonder if to search
This common nature through the various change
Of sex, and age, and fortune, and the frame
Of each peculiar, draw the busy mind
With unresisted charms? The spacious west,
And all the teeming regions of the south
Hold not a quarry, to the curious flight
Of knowledge, half so tempting or so fair,
As man to man. Nor only where the smiles
Of love invite; nor only where the applause
Of cordial honour turns the attentive eye
On virtue's graceful deeds. For since the course
Of things external acts in different ways
On human apprehensions, as the hand
Of nature temper'd to a different frame.
Peculiar minds; so haply where the powers
Of fancy neither lessen nor enlarge
The images of things, but paint in all
Their genuine hues, the features which they wore
In nature; there opinion will be true,
And action right. For action treads the path
In which opinion says he follows good,
Or flies from evil; and opinion gives
Report of good or evil, as the scene
Was drawn by fancy, lovely or deform'd:
Thus her report can never there be true
Where fancy cheats the intellectual eye,
With glaring colours and distorted lines.
Is there a man, who at the sound of death
Sees ghastly shapes of terror conjur'd up,
And black before him; nought but death-bed groans
And fearful prayers, and plunging from the brink
Of light and being, down the gloomy air,
An unknown depth? Alas! in such a mind,
If no bright forms of excellence attend
The image of his country; nor the pomp
Of sacred senates, nor the guardian voice
Of justice on her throne, nor aught that wakes
The conscious bosom with a patriot's flame;
Will not opinion tell him, that to die,
Or stand the hazard, is a greater ill
Than to betray his country? And in act
Will he not chuse to be a wretch and live?
Here vice begins then. From the inchanting cup
Which fancy holds to all, the unwary thirst
Of youth oft swallows a Circæan draught,
That sheds a baleful tincture o'er the eye
Of reason, till no longer he discerns,

Say what some poets will, Nature is not so much her own ever-sweet interpreter, as the mere supplier of that cunning alphabet, whereby selecting and combining as he pleases, each man reads his own peculiar lesson according to his own peculiar mind and mood.

Economy

"There's nothing like economy,"
I heard a chap remark,
Who, judging by his tout ensemble,
Had issued from the ark.
He was a most peculiar man,
With visage wan and thin,
And liquid drops of amber hue
A-trickling down his chin.
"They tell us it's extravagant,"
He added with a shrug,
As he deposited a quid
Within his spacious "mug," —
"They tell us it's extravagant,
This ' chewing of the weed;'
But only use ' economy,'
You'll never be in need.
"And this is how to practise it:
Chew your tobacco well,
Using a little at a time,—
It nat'rally will swell;
"Then take the quid and dry it, sir!"—
'Twas thus the fellow spoke,—
"And, when you want a quiet whiff,
Put in your pipe, and smoke.
"And, stranger, after doing this,
If you are fond of snuff,
The ashes that are left behind
Will serve you well enough.
"And thus," said this peculiar man
(I fear he did but joke,)
"If you will follow my advice,
It will not end in smoke."

What's Up

25 years of my life and still
I'm trying to get up that great big hill of hope
For a destination
I realised quickly when i knew i should
That the world was made up of this
Brotherhood of man
For whatever that means
So i cry sometimes when i'm lying in bed
To get it all out what's in my head
Then i start feeling a little peculiar
So i wake in the morning and i step
Outside i take deep breath
I get real high
Then i scream from the top of my lungs
What's goin' on
And i say hey...
And i say hey what's goin' on
And i say hey...
I said hey what's goin' on
And i try, oh my god do i try
I try all the time
In this institution
And i pray, oh my god do i pray
I pray every single day
For a revolution
So i cry sometimes when i'm lying in my bed
To get it all out what's in my head
Then i start feeling a little peculiar
So i wake in the morning and i step outside
I take a deep breath then i get real high
Then i scream from the top of my lungs
What's goin' on
And i say hey...
And i said hey what's goin' on
And i say hey...
I said hey what's goin' on
And i say hey...
And i said hey what's goin' on
And i say hey...
I said hey what's goin' on

London Bridge Song

Jonis lighthearted take on london bridge was a crowd pleaser in her mid-sixties club show, before she signed her first recording contract. this transcription includes spoken patter
Combined with her music, enchanted audiences back in the early days when joni was playing the smaller, more intimate venues she has always enjoyed most.
(spoken words are in italics)
London bridge is falling down
See the people in my town
Theyre the ones who bring it down
(its true theyve been for centuries,
Walking by it and saying, you know,
London bridge really is falling down, poor thing,
It just fell down in shame)
My fair lady-o
London bridge is falling up
Save the tea leaves in my cup
Guess the cup is cracking up
My fair lady-o
(Ill have to get a pyrex one)
London bridge is up for sale
Booze heads put my friend in jail
Spent my bridge money on bail
My fair lady-o
(sure wouldve like to have bought that bridge)
(couldnt let him go to jail)
If the bridge belonged to me
I would serve you tarts and tea
Smiles, thats all the tolls would be
(dont grant you people would be getting across at all)
My fair lady-o
On the bridge there stands a car
Painted with peculiar flowers
Its the beatles its not ours
(guess theyre looking at the bridge)
(hope they buy it)
My fair lady-o
London bridge is falling down
(something like that)
London bridge is coming down
Coming down on london bridge
Ice cubes melting in my fridge
(they always, do you know those fridges are terrible, theyre always melting things and ice cubes are dripping all over the floor)
(and the vegetables are all rotten and your friend turns to you in her very british way and she says: you know I paid two bob for this. it smells a bit peculiar doesnt it, but dont you t
.. well, we can serve it anyway and she does)
Coming down on london bridge
Mutton rotting in my fridge
Coming dow-ow-ow-ow-ow-ow-ow-ow

Nobody Told Me

Everybodys talking and no one says a word
Everybodys making love and no one really cares
Theres nazis in the bathroom just below the stairs
Always something happening and nothing going on
Theres always something cooking and nothing in the pot
Theyre starving back in china so finish what you got
Nobody told me thered be days like these
Nobody told me thered be days like these
Nobody told me thered be days like these
Strange days indeed -- strange days indeed
Everybodys runnin and no one makes a move
Everyones a winner and nothing left to lose
Theres a little yellow idol to the north of katmandu
Everybodys flying and no one leaves the ground
Everybodys crying and no one makes a sound
Theres a place for us in the movies you just gotta lay around
Nobody told me thered be days like these
Nobody told me thered be days like these
Nobody told me thered be days like these
Strange days indeed -- most peculiar, mama
Everybodys smoking and no ones getting high
Everybodys flying and never touch the sky
Theres a ufo over new york and I aint too surprised
Nobody told me thered be days like these
Nobody told me thered be days like these
Nobody told me thered be days like these
Strange days indeed -- most peculiar, mama
