The Spooniad

[The late Mr. Jonathan Swift Somers, laureate of Spoon River, planned The Spooniad as an epic in twenty-four books, but unfortunately did not live to complete even the first book. The fragment was found among his papers by William Marion Reedy and was for the first time published in Reedy's Mirror of December 18th, 1914.]

Of John Cabanis' wrath and of the strife
Of hostile parties, and his dire defeat
Who led the common people in the cause
Of freedom for Spoon River, and the fall
Of Rhodes' bank that brought unnumbered woes
And loss to many, with engendered hate
That flamed into the torch in Anarch hands
To burn the court-house, on whose blackened wreck
A fairer temple rose and Progress stood --
Sing, muse, that lit the Chian's face with smiles,
Who saw the ant-like Greeks and Trojans crawl
About Scamander, over walls, pursued
Or else pursuing, and the funeral pyres
And sacred hecatombs, and first because
Of Helen who with Paris fled to Troy
As soul-mate; and the wrath of Peleus' son,
Decreed to lose Chryseis, lovely spoil
Of war, and dearest concubine.
Say first,
Thou son of night, called Momus, from whose eyes
No secret hides, and Thalia, smiling one,
What bred 'twixt Thomas Rhodes and John Cabanis
The deadly strife? His daughter Flossie, she,
Returning from her wandering with a troop
Of strolling players, walked the village streets,
Her bracelets tinkling and with sparkling rings
And words of serpent wisdom and a smile
Of cunning in her eyes. Then Thomas Rhodes,
Who ruled the church and ruled the bank as well,
Made known his disapproval of the maid;
And all Spoon River whispered and the eyes
Of all the church frowned on her, till she knew
They feared her and condemned.
But them to flout
She gave a dance to viols and to flutes,
Brought from Peoria, and many youths,
But lately made regenerate through the prayers
Of zealous preachers and of earnest souls,
Danced merrily, and sought her in the dance,
Who wore a dress so low of neck that eyes
Down straying might survey the snowy swale
Till it was lost in whiteness.
With the dance
The village changed to merriment from gloom.
The milliner, Mrs. Williams, could not fill
Her orders for new hats, and every seamstress
Plied busy needles making gowns; old trunks

The Hind And The Panther, A Poem In Three Parts : Part III.

Much malice, mingled with a little wit,
Perhaps may censure this mysterious writ;
Because the muse has peopled Caledon
With panthers, bears, and wolves, and beasts unknown,
As if we were not stocked with monsters of our own.
Let Æsop answer, who has set to view
Such kinds as Greece and Phrygia never knew;
And Mother Hubbard, in her homely dress,
Has sharply blamed a British lioness;
That queen, whose feast the factious rabble keep,
Exposed obscenely naked, and asleep.
Led by those great examples, may not I
The wonted organs of their words supply?
If men transact like brutes, 'tis equal then
For brutes to claim the privilege of men.
Others our Hind of folly will indite,
To entertain a dangerous guest by night.
Let those remember, that she cannot die,
Till rolling time is lost in round eternity;
Nor need she fear the Panther, though untamed,
Because the Lion's peace was now proclaimed;
The wary savage would not give offence,
To forfeit the protection of her prince;
But watched the time her vengeance to complete,
When all her furry sons in frequent senate met;
Meanwhile she quenched her fury at the flood,
And with a lenten salad cooled her blood.
Their commons, though but coarse, were nothing scant,
Nor did their minds an equal banquet want.
For now the Hind, whose noble nature strove
To express her plain simplicity of love,
Did all the honours of her house so well,
No sharp debates disturbed the friendly meal.
She turned the talk, avoiding that extreme,
To common dangers past, a sadly-pleasing theme;
Remembering every storm which tossed the state,
When both were objects of the public hate,
And dropt a tear betwixt for her own children's fate.
Nor failed she then a full review to make
Of what the Panther suffered for her sake;
Her lost esteem, her truth, her loyal care,
Her faith unshaken to an exiled heir,
Her strength to endure, her courage to defy,
Her choice of honourable infamy.
On these, prolixly thankful, she enlarged;
Then with acknowledgments herself she charged;
For friendship, of itself an holy tie,
Is made more sacred by adversity.
Now should they part, malicious tongues would say,
They met like chance companions on the way,

Who Are They Who Point to The Liberals?

Who are they who point to The Liberals?
Those of Conservative values?
Those who send others,
To end their conflicts?
Those who sit with their opinions...
And sip on dry martinis.
And discuss their vacation visits.

Those of 'right winged' policies...
Whose sons and daughters,
Hide behind college walls...
With no military,
Or civic duties to complete!

Those who feed their greed,
And learn skills of deception.
To earn positions on Wall Street!
With their cheating test scores,
That have granted them B.A., M.A....
And Doctorate degrees.

Who are they who point to The Liberals?
Those of Conservative values?
Those that have turned their quality of life...
Into a cesspool of decadence,
Created to instill fear and strife.
To all now witnessing their economic blight!

Who are they who point to The Liberals?
Those who wish to do things right.
Those who are concern about all human life.
Those who now must clean up the mess.
Left by separatists conservatives!
Thick with mindsets of incompetence.
And walking on destructive paths!

Who are they who point to The Liberals?

'Those who feel they should be invited...
To kneel before the Queen of England,
And be knighted! '

Stifle Rave and Rant

Some people
(who can’t be identified)
Say some things

(that can’t be verified)
That passes for news that’s
(rarified, bullied and) terrified.

Some people say
Liberals are always wrong
Past, future and present.

Some people say
They pigeonhole wrong
people like pheasant.

Some people say
“Some people say
Liberals? - unpleasant.”

Some people say
“Some people say
Liberals? - mamby pamby.”

Wrong people say
Fair and balanced
Fox News can’t be.

Some people say
Some people and
Wrong people can’t

Sit somewhere and
Talk, and stifle
Rave and rant.

Some people grind
Opinion sausage at
A shiny plant.

An elephant shows
Greater respect for
A tiny ant.

Sit somewhere and
Talk, and stifle
Rave and rant.

So couch people
Can watch decent

In politics it is necessary either to betray one's country or the electorate. I prefer to betray the electorate.

I think Hillary and Bill are really liberals at heart. I think that, in addition to being liberals, they are very practical. They have made some decisions about what it takes to win.

The liberals in the House strongly resemble liberals I have known through the last two decades in the civil rights conflict. When it comes time to show on which side they will be counted, they excuse themselves.

It wouldn't be fair to say that conservatives cherish property the way liberals cherish equality. But it would be fair to say that the takings clause is the conservatives' recipe for judicial activism just as they say liberals have misused the equal protection clause.

Disappointment X 10 ... Nov 24th,2012

DISAPPOINTMENT x 10 ... Nov 24th,2012
By
James Bredin

We elected the Conservatives and threw the Liberals out,
Expecting our new politicians knew what change was about,
Unfortunately, we're only getting more of the same,
Or has Brian Mulroney returned - he of the GST shame?

No referendums or proportional representation on the board.
Just another disappointment when we thought we had scored
Therefore compulsory voting will never be even discussed,
And they look at death-with-dignity with absolute disgust.

The changes we expected; disappeared quickly into thin air,
They have their own secret agenda in our political affairs.
If they were Liberals, we could understand but they're not,
It looks like, the changes we expected will amount to squat.

Toronto Injection Sites

Our media types may love the Vancouver-type injection sites,
But we the people have no referendums and few democratic rights,
And the drug-addict activists may indeed change the laws,
Did it in Vancouver with Supreme Court help; therefore no flaws.

Because less than half Canadians even bother to vote,
Therefore our established aristocrats can frequently gloat,
And those who might object, cannot be seen or even heard,
Their voices are way in the background and very blurred.

Have the Conservatives turned into Ottawa Liberals; God forbid!
Isolated travelling the world, maybe in Hong Kong or Madrid,
And like the Liberals, they want to stay forever there,
No referendums or death-with-dignity, so say a prayer.

Aren't You All Neighbors?

If I consume more than my neighbor,
And squander my feeding at their expense...
To then expect for them to remain silent,
As they pay more for the construction of my fence.
Or the fixing of cracks on pavements I travel,
Without my offering a single cent.
Why should I be disturbed by their nonsense?

Yet I am the first to advocate the raising of rents,
To keep certain 'elements' away from me and distanced.
Should I get upset the request I pay higher taxes,
On my property that has been re-assessed?
Since I am more accustomed to live high on the hog,
While others around me find it difficult to live on less?

'But...
Aren't you all neighbors?
And aren't you all sharing the same amenities offered? '

I am a conservative.
I am not one of those 'liberals' seeking a hand-out.
I am entitled to be served.

'But...
Aren't you all neighbors?
And aren't you all sharing the same amenities offered? '

I am a conservative.
I am not one of those 'liberals' seeking a hand-out.
I am entitled to be served.

If I consume more than my neighbor,
And squander my feeding at their expense...
To then expect for them to remain silent,
As they pay more for the construction of my fence.

Why should I be disturbed by their nonsense?

Fresh Blood

Now confessions have been professed.
After heartbreaks have occurred,
And many needless deaths...
Have been left to upset!

Now...
Confessions have been professed,
But why not before?
Before a book has been written?
And before the media is contacted?
To get one publicity and press...
Before a book release,
With a promise of lucrative sells to impress.

Fresh blood is on the table!
Fresh blood is there!
But not to clear a consciousness.
Of 'that' you can bet.
One of morals and consciousness,
Had never expressed that at all,
To be intially something they had...
To have others believe and made aware!

Are There Believers?

We professed divine mandate
We speak for the Most High
God's mind is our minds
We are adept in memorising verses
Recitation of holy sciptures is our pride
We qoute verses upon verses
Our appearance is sanctimonious
We are authorities in piety
Our views are Godly
Our tongues eloquently preaches virtue
We are truly the angels of God
That seats with the cherubims
Eating spiritual foods with seraphims.

Behold! What we are outside
Is different from our inside.
What our lips professed
Varies with what are confessed.
We say peace where none exists.
We annihilate each others
In the name of our faiths.
We are intolerant of each other.
Greed, selfishness and avariciousness
Are our three square meals.
We kill in the name of God
As if God is unable to fight.
We seat on the judgemental throne
Adjucating on God's behalf.
We are just fake believers
Maquerading as true believers.
Where are then are true believers?

Expected Change

Only God above changes hearts; The One behind as one departs,
From a life that is filled with in sin, when God’s Spirit, lives within,
But, many have only a head belief, and from sin there is no relief,
From their present sinful life, not personally knowing Jesus Christ.

They just struggle day and hour, never sensing The Spirit’s power,
Acknowledging Truth as they hear it, but, not indwelt by The Spirit,
God’s Holy Spirit sent to men, but, only when they are Born Again,
Born of God from Heaven above, by God’s Spirit Christ spoke of.

Many men acknowledge The Lord, but day by day God is ignored,
Living every day, on their own, ignoring Authority of God’s Throne,
God’s Power, that changes a life, who truly comes to Jesus Christ,
God’s Authority to make one whole, as the Spirit indwells that soul.

So professed believers do stumble, as their heart was not humble,
When they professed knowledge of, our Lord God reigning above,
With their present spirit of pride, God’s Holy Spirit wouldn’t reside,
In the heart of the professing soul, so in life they’ll continue to fall.

A Truth that comes with Salvation, is God’s Work of Regeneration,
As God’s Spirit changes everyone, who truly comes to God’s Son,
Change that Scripture makes clear, that in each believer will appear,
But, if change you do not see, you may not know Christ personally.

Lines To Observe

I refused to yield to pressure
Even though I had nothing precious with me as treasure
It did hurt my sentiments to break me from within
They could never come to know how much depressed I had been

If I was told to leave place at once I could gladly do
If it was last option I could have agreed even if untrue
But why would they insist on me falling in their lines?
How can they pressurize me when I completely declined?

I would never leave my faith if that causes any embarrassment
If they want to have forcible conversion then it is their movement
I will cling to that path from where inspiration and strength is drawn
I shall disown any belief that has been forced upon

If we come out from our stated lines to observe
We may come across many tales of messiahs who descended on earth to serve
Laid down their lives for upholding the faith and true causes
So many citations can be had from many prophets as it was

Money and power play dominant role
It is just show off and sprit behind it is completely stolen
Religious places are made show pieces and symbol of exhibition
Where people visit not out of faith but with superstition

What difference it may make if millions are of same faith?
How does it stop innocent people falling to merciless deaths?
How come a person offering prayer is sprayed with bullet?
Who will claim and say it was only the destiny decided by fate?

I shall believe in any faith if that preaches true religion
Enough respect for humanism barred by any region
Let some one pray rising sun or respect emergence of moon
We all must feel heat while toiling hard in after noon

This was the message actually intended
It was never meant to be offended
All messages meant for masses were carefully worded
To be professed and adopted were later on distorted

I feel like crying when regretfully listen to cruelty
Have we stooped so below to insult the almighty?
We hanged them to death and took away the life
Yet they preached and professed without fearing knife

Basic Decisions

So pitiful have become those choice allegiances.
The ones some chose to bond with years ago,
With a professed loyalty overestimated...
That anyone conscious would have let go.

Today it seems a waste of time,
To discuss how things 'use' to be...
With a locked frame of mind on times much changed.

Even those who had obtained good jobs,
Believing themselves to arrive at some stability...
To find their investments to retire on a beach,
Pulled away from their realities they no longer can speak.

Today it seems a waste of time,
To discuss how things 'use' to be...
With a locked frame of mind on times much changed.

So pitiful have become those choice allegiances.
The ones some chose to bond with years ago,
With a professed loyalty overestimated...
That anyone conscious would have let go.

But who knew those dismissed from such cliques,
Would one day discover themselves to be...
The bigger winners living on fixed incomes.
But feeling happier from basic decisions they have made.

Implemented Craziness

It seems as though the more I age,
The less I care about those who address pettiness.
And their hollowed professed confessions...
Of having beliefs in God.
And afraid to step out on their faith.
What sense does that make?

People 'say' they pray for peace!
And as soon as they are 'released'
From their places of worship...
I overhear them passing judgements.
And condoning needless wars.

People 'say' they pray for unity,
And brotherhood.
And in most neighborhoods,
There is conflict of some kind.

People 'say' they pray for racial equality.
As long as they are made to feel superior,
Over others of color.
And they are restricted from a quality of life,
That is diminishing rapidly in quality...
And those 'values' they uphold,
Are materialistic and has devastated the economy!

It seems as though the more I age,
The less I care about those who address pettiness.
And their hollowed professed confessions...
Of having beliefs in God.
And afraid to step out on their faith.
What sense does that make?

It seems as though the more I age,
Those who take offense
To an obvious display of implemented craziness,
Are quicker to defend this mess...
As if it is tradition.

So Much Goes Unsaid

So much goes unsaid,
Between those sharing a relationship.
But uncommitted to communicate.

So much goes misunderstood.
As expectations,
Grow further distanced.

And a union isn't what it could be.
With a love professed...
Before a legalized ceremony,
Took affect to leave...
A hunt to trap a 'game' to seize.
To then do what one chooses to please.

So much goes unsaid,
Between those sharing a relationship.
But uncommitted to communicate.

So much goes misunderstood.
As expectations,
Grow further distanced.

And that which has been captured,
Seeks dishonesty...
With a taste for unfaithful sleaze.

And a union isn't what it could be.
With a love professed...
Before a legalized ceremony,
Took affect to leave...
A hunt to trap a 'game' to seize.

To then do what one chooses to please.
With a seeking that teases,
Discreet and decadent opportunities.
