Yes, I backed the hula hoop. And I had a lot of other people come to me with ideas that turned out well.

A Roxbury Garden

I

Hoops

Blue and pink sashes,
Criss-cross shoes,
Minna and Stella run out into the garden
To play at hoop.

Up and down the garden-paths they race,
In the yellow sunshine,
Each with a big round hoop
White as a stripped willow-wand.

Round and round turn the hoops,
Their diamond whiteness cleaving the yellow sunshine.
The gravel crunches and squeaks beneath them,
And a large pebble springs them into the air
To go whirling for a foot or two
Before they touch the earth again
In a series of little jumps.

Spring, Hoops!
Spit out a shower of blue and white brightness.
The little criss-cross shoes twinkle behind you,
The pink and blue sashes flutter like flags,
The hoop-sticks are ready to beat you.
Turn, turn, Hoops! In the yellow sunshine.
Turn your stripped willow whiteness
Along the smooth paths.

Stella sings:
'Round and round, rolls my hoop,
Scarcely touching the ground,
With a swoop,
And a bound,
Round and round.
With a bumpety, crunching, scattering sound,
Down the garden it flies;
In our eyes
The sun lies.
See it spin
Out and in;
Through the paths it goes whirling,
About the beds curling.
Sway now to the loop,
Faster, faster, my hoop.
Round you come,
Up you come,
Quick and straight as before.

Hula Hands

Lovely hula hands, graceful as a bird in motion
Riding like the doves over the ocean, lovely hula hands
Kah Li ma na ni'ae
Lovely hula hands, telling of the rain in the valleys
And the swirling winds over Na' Pali, lovely hula hands
Kah Li ma na ni'ae
I can feel the soft caresses of your hula hands, your lovely hula hands
Every little move expresses, so I'll understand all the tender meanings
Of your hula hands, fingertips that say Aloha
Say to me again I love you, lovely hula hands
Kah Li ma na ni'ae
I can feel the soft caresses of your hula hands, your lovely hula hands
Every litte move expresses, so I'll understand all the tender meanings
Of your hula hands, fingertips that say Aloha
Say to me again I love you, lovely hula hands
Kah Li ma na ni'ae

Virginia's Story

Elizabeth Gates-Wooten is my Grand mom.

She was born in Canada with her father and brothers.
They owned a Barber Shoppe.
I don't remember exactly where in Canada.
I believe it was right over the border like Windsor or Toronto.
I never knew exactly where it was.

When she was old enough she got married.

First, she married a man by the name of Frank Gates.
He was from Madagascar.
He fathered my mom and her brother and sister.
The boy's name was Frank Gates, Jr.
Two girls name were Anna and Agnes.

Agnes was my mother.

Frank Gates went crazy after the war
He drank a lot and died
Then grandma Elizabeth married a man by the name of Mr. Wooten.
He had a German name, but I don't think he was German.
She took his last name after they got married.

Then they moved to West Virginia in the United States.

Their son, Frank Gates Jr. Became a delegate in the democratic party.
He use to get into a lot of trouble because he liked to fight.
He was a delegate from the 1940's to 1970's.
He died of gout in the 1970's.

Anna was a maid and cook.

She baked cakes and stuff for people as a side line.
She had a hump on her back (scoliosis) .
She had to walk with a cane.
She could cook good though.
She did this kind of work all of her life, just like her mom, Elizabeth

They were both good cooks

They had a lot of money because they had these skills
Especially when people had parties.
Because they would make all of this food and then they would have left-overs.
We got to eat a lot of stuff we normally wouldn't get because of that.
When they cooked, they didn't use no measuring stuff, they would just use there hand.

My moms name was Agnes Barrie Gates.

She married James Wright and moved to Cleveland.

Headlong

Words and music by queen
And youre rushing headlong youve got a new goal
And youre rushing headlong out of control
And you think youre so strong
But there aint no stopping
And theres nothin you can do about it
Nothin you can do no theres nothin you can do about it
No theres nothin you can nothin you can nothin you can
Do about it
And youre rushing headlong youve got a new goal
And youre rushing headlong out of control
And you think youre so strong
But there aint no stopping no theres nothin you can do
About it
Yeah
Hey he used to be a man with a stick in his hand
Hoop diddy diddy - hoop diddy do
She used to be a woman with a hot dog stand
Hoop diddy diddy - hoop diddy do
Now youve got soup in the laundry bag
Now youve got strings youre gonna lose your rag
Youre gettin in a fight
Then it aint so groovy when youre screaming in the night
Let me out of this cheap b movie
Headlong down the highway and youre rushing
Headlong out of control
And you think youre so strong
But there aint no stopping and you cant stop rockin
And theres nothin you can nothin you can nothin you can
Do about it
When a red hot man meets a white hot lady
Hoop diddy diddy - hoop diddy do
Soon the fire starts raging gets you more than half crazy
Hoop diddy diddy - hoop diddy do
Now they start freaking everywhere you turn
You cant start walking cause your feet got burned
It aint no time to figure wrong from right
Cause reasons out of the window better hold on tight
Youre rushing headlong
Headlong out of control - yeah
And you think youre so strong
But there aint no stopping
And theres nothin you nothin you nothin you can do about
It at all
Yeah yeah
Alright - go
And youre rushing headlong down the highway
And youre rushing headlong out of control
And you think youre so strong
But there aint no stopping

Im The Man

Pretty soon now
Yknow Im gonna make a comeback
And like the birds and the bees in the trees
Its a sure-fire smash
Ill speak
To the masses throughout the media
And if you got anything to say to me
You can say it with cash
cause I got the trash and you got the cash
So baby we should get along fine
So give me all your money cause I know you think Im funny
Cant you hear me laughing
Cant you see me smile
Im the man
Im the man that gave you the hula-hoop
Im the man
Im the man that gave you the yo-yo
Kung fu
That was one of my good ones
Well whats a few broken bones
When we all know its good clean fun
Skateboards
Ive almost made them respectable
You see I cant always get through to you
So I go for your son
I had a giant rubber shark and it really made a mark
Didja looka looka lookit alla blood
Give me all your money cause I know you think Im funny
Cant you hear me laughing
Cant you see me smile
Im the man
Im the man that gave you the hula-hoop
Im the man
Im the man that gave you the yo-yo
Right now
I think Im gonna plan a new trend
Because the line on the graphs getting low
And we cant have that
And you think youre immune
But I can sell you anything
Anything from a thin safety pin
To a pork pie hat
cause I got the trash and you got the cash
So baby we should get along fine
So give me all your money cause I know you think Im funny
Cant you hear me laughing
Cant you see me smile
Im the man

Rock-a-hula Baby

(words & music by fred wise - ben weisman - dolores fuller)
The way she moves her hips to her fingertips
I feel Im heaven bound
And when she starts to sway, Ive gotta say
She really move the grass around
Rock-a-hula baby
Rock-a-hula baby
Got a hula lulu from honolulu
That rock-a-hula baby of mine
Although I love to kiss my little hula miss
I never get the chance
I wanna hold her tight all through the night
But all she wants to do is dance
I bet that she could teach the palms along the beach
To sway when breezes blow
And birds up in the sky could learn to fly
By watchin how my baby can go

Ideas For Walls

So many things in my head, Ive always had them before
No reason to be upset, theyre just ideas for walls
Now Im standing inside, outside, which is the right side
Im standing, demanding that the nightlife be called the right life
Like putting paint on my feet & walking sideways in rows
My walls could be so complete, complete with patterns of toes
Now Im standing inside, outside, which is the right side
Im standing the left side, right side, which is the right side
Now-ideas
Ideas for walls
Ideas for walls
Ideas for walls
A little m for the mirror, a double u for the wall
To make things perfectly clear, a great big h in the hall
Now Im standing inside, outside, which is the right side
Im standing, demanding that the nightlife be called the right life
Is everybody confused? (no) Im making no sense at all
You want a room with a view you need ideas for walls
Now Im standing inside, outside, which is the right side
Im standing inside, outside, outside, right side
Inside, outside, which is the right side
Now -- ideas
Ideas for walls
Ideas for walls
Ideas for walls
Ideas
Theyre just ideas for walls
Ideas for walls

Rooty Toot Toot

Got my hands on a little bit of dough
So I went to the crocery store
And got some steaks to go
Went by, and picked up my gal, teddi jo
We had ourselves a picnic
Beside a dirty road
Chorus:
Rooty toot toot
Rooty toot toot
We had it made in the shade
Like a bell through the hoop
Spinnin and tumblin inside this
Hoola hoop
Livin and learnin
rooty toot toot
We laid out a blanket
And started a fire.
Had the radio playin
from inside the car
I took off my shirt
And kicked off my shoes
She read the paper
And told me the news
She said, theres a lot of
People out there
Who are at the end of their rope
Sometimes, baby
Youve got to lay low
Chorus:
Rooty toot toot
Rooty toot toot
We had it made in the shade
Like a bell through the hoop
Spinnin and tumblin inside this
Hoola hoop
Livin and learnin
rooty toot toot
We stayed there all day
We both get us some real
Good suntans
I thought, that was ok
Sometimes life can be so grand
We were gettin ready
To shake out that place
When the illinois state trooper
Got in my face
He said, youre on pirvate property
But once he cooled down, he was ok
Sometimes youre golden, man
Thats all I got to say

Give Your Heart To The Hawks

1 he apples hung until a wind at the equinox,

That heaped the beach with black weed, filled the dry grass

Under the old trees with rosy fruit.

In the morning Fayne Fraser gathered the sound ones into a

basket,

The bruised ones into a pan. One place they lay so thickly
She knelt to reach them.

Her husband's brother passing
Along the broken fence of the stubble-field,
His quick brown eyes took in one moving glance
A little gopher-snake at his feet flowing through the stubble
To gain the fence, and Fayne crouched after apples
With her mop of red hair like a glowing coal
Against the shadow in the garden. The small shapely reptile
Flowed into a thicket of dead thistle-stalks
Around a fence-post, but its tail was not hidden.
The young man drew it all out, and as the coil
Whipped over his wrist, smiled at it; he stepped carefully
Across the sag of the wire. When Fayne looked up
His hand was hidden; she looked over her shoulder
And twitched her sunburnt lips from small white teeth
To answer the spark of malice in his eyes, but turned
To the apples, intent again. Michael looked down
At her white neck, rarely touched by the sun,
But now the cinnabar-colored hair fell off from it;
And her shoulders in the light-blue shirt, and long legs like a boy's
Bare-ankled in blue-jean trousers, the country wear;
He stooped quietly and slipped the small cool snake
Up the blue-denim leg. Fayne screamed and writhed,
Clutching her thigh. 'Michael, you beast.' She stood up
And stroked her leg, with little sharp cries, the slender invader
Fell down her ankle.

Fayne snatched for it and missed;

Michael stood by rejoicing, his rather small

Finely cut features in a dance of delight;

Fayne with one sweep flung at his face

All the bruised and half-spoiled apples in the pan,

I prefer the definition used by Ian Robertson: 'all the shared products of society: material and nonmaterial' (Our text defines it in somewhat more ponderous terms- 'The totality of learned, socially transmitted behavior. It includes ideas, values, and customs (as well as the sailboats, comic books, and birth control devices) of groups of people' (p.32) .

Why not dip n’ sip?

Splurge in swanky sap

A scooty showbiz swap
Nuzzle and nipnap.

Play my in-built harp

Hold your hottie honey zap
In melodymedley enwrap.

Galore gaga gala
Effuse wallow in hula-hula.

Scoop and skip why then?

Through the eyes of a Field Coronet (Epic)

Introduction

In the kaki coloured tent in Umbilo he writes
his life’s story while women, children and babies are dying,
slowly but surely are obliterated, he see how his nation is suffering
while the events are notched into his mind.

Lying even heavier on him is the treason
of some other Afrikaners who for own gain
have delivered him, to imprisonment in this place of hatred
and thoughts go through him to write a book.

Prologue

The Afrikaner nation sprouted
from Dutchmen,
who fought decades without defeat
against the super power Spain

mixed with French Huguenots
who left their homes and belongings,
with the revocation of the Edict of Nantes.
Associate this then with the fact

that these people fought formidable
for seven generations
against every onslaught that they got
from savages en wild animals

becoming marksmen, riding
and taming wild horses
with one bullet per day
to hunt a wild antelope,

who migrated right across the country
over hills in mass protest
and then you have
the most formidable adversary
and then let them fight

in a natural wilderness
where the hunter,
the sniper and horseman excels
and any enemy is at a lost.

Let them then also be patriotic
into their souls,
believe in and read
out of the word of God

The Circus

Hey, there! Hoop-la! the circus is in town!
Have you seen the elephant? Have you seen the clown?
Have you seen the dappled horse gallop round the ring?
Have you seen the acrobats on the dizzy swing?
Have you seen the tumbling men tumble up and down?
Hoop-la! Hoop-la! the circus is in town!

Hey, there! Hoop-la! Here's the circus troupe!
Here's the educated, dog jumping through the hoop.
See the lady Blondin with the parasol and fan,
The lad upon the ladder and the india-rubber man.
See the joyful juggler and the boy who loops the loop.
Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey! Here's the circus troupe!

Thoughts and ideas - (Talking through my hat)

Break and husk
thoughts and ideas that,
without reason,
I smashing them like nuts
into my head – mortar with pig iron pestle.

Lay and hatch
thoughts and ideas,
and younglings,
instead of fly,
I keep them under latch
in my head – cage of neurons,
dendrites and axons.

Knead and raise
thoughts and ideas
but let me tempted,
and without reason,
instead of bake them, I play
of thieves and bobbies”
with bullets of dough
shot from my head – automatic gun.

Pull kernels out of
thoughts and ideas
but I put not them to spring
and hundredfold harvest to bring,
I chain them necklace
that my poor mind
who walks nomad
through my head – ballad
to put it neck
in a night with moon
and than to catch
in a fairies dance
and hungry of blue
to soar in the stars.

***

Thoughts and ideas
are shrieking through my mind
as lost migratory birds
in an autumn of rains.
Thoughts and ideas
- arrow-shaped cranes with wet wings -
fall all at once
in my head – moorland
of thistle and mud.

Hoopitteedoo

Never give it up to anyone with a sucker punch.
With a pain that doubles you with troubles,
And you're taken out to lunch.

Never give it up to anyone with a sucker punch.
You may get duped,
With a looting too.

Some people hesitate with those they know fake.
Believing they are not the next to have a heartbreak.
Some people like the color of someone's eyes.
Not if they have dignity carried with pride.
Some people into things like to 'materialate'
About who has what and how that rates!

Never give it up to anyone with a sucker punch.
With a pain that doubles you with troubles,
And you're taken out to lunch.

Never give it up to anyone with a sucker punch.
You may get duped,
With a looting too.

Who's gonna hoop and holler in new gym shoes.
Who's gonna wear their jeans below the butt crack.
And...
Who's gonna hoop and holler in new gym shoes.
Who's gonna wear their jeans below the butt crack.

You may get duped,
With a looting too.

Who's gonna hoop and holler in new gym shoes.
Who's gonna be the one to 'hoopitteedoo'?
And...
Who's gonna wear their jeans below the butt crack.
Are they serious of having a lust and taste for that?
Ugh!
Who's gonna hoop and holler in new gym shoes.
Who's gonna be the one to 'hoopitteedoo'?
And...
Who's gonna wear their jeans below the butt crack.

The House Of Dust: Complete

I.

The sun goes down in a cold pale flare of light.
The trees grow dark: the shadows lean to the east:
And lights wink out through the windows, one by one.
A clamor of frosty sirens mourns at the night.
Pale slate-grey clouds whirl up from the sunken sun.

And the wandering one, the inquisitive dreamer of dreams,
The eternal asker of answers, stands in the street,
And lifts his palms for the first cold ghost of rain.
The purple lights leap down the hill before him.
The gorgeous night has begun again.

'I will ask them all, I will ask them all their dreams,
I will hold my light above them and seek their faces.
I will hear them whisper, invisible in their veins . . .'
The eternal asker of answers becomes as the darkness,
Or as a wind blown over a myriad forest,
Or as the numberless voices of long-drawn rains.

We hear him and take him among us, like a wind of music,
Like the ghost of a music we have somewhere heard;
We crowd through the streets in a dazzle of pallid lamplight,
We pour in a sinister wave, ascend a stair,
With laughter and cry, and word upon murmured word;
We flow, we descend, we turn . . . and the eternal dreamer
Moves among us like light, like evening air . . .

Good-night! Good-night! Good-night! We go our ways,
The rain runs over the pavement before our feet,
The cold rain falls, the rain sings.
We walk, we run, we ride. We turn our faces
To what the eternal evening brings.

Our hands are hot and raw with the stones we have laid,
We have built a tower of stone high into the sky,
We have built a city of towers.

Our hands are light, they are singing with emptiness.
Our souls are light; they have shaken a burden of hours . . .
What did we build it for? Was it all a dream? . . .
Ghostly above us in lamplight the towers gleam . . .
And after a while they will fall to dust and rain;
Or else we will tear them down with impatient hands;
And hew rock out of the earth, and build them again.
