Aspects Of Robinson

Robinson at cards at the Algonquin; a thin
Blue light comes down once more outside the blinds.
Gray men in overcoats are ghosts blown past the door.
The taxis streak the avenues with yellow, orange, and red.
This is Grand Central, Mr. Robinson.

Robinson on a roof above the Heights; the boats
Mourn like the lost. Water is slate, far down.
Through sounds of ice cubes dropped in glass, an osteopath,
Dressed for the links, describes an old Intourist tour.
—Here’s where old Gibbons jumped from, Robinson.

Robinson walking in the Park, admiring the elephant.
Robinson buying the Tribune, Robinson buying the Times. Robinson
Saying, “Hello. Yes, this is Robinson. Sunday
At five? I’d love to. Pretty well. And you?”
Robinson alone at Longchamps, staring at the wall.

Robinson afraid, drunk, sobbing Robinson
In bed with a Mrs. Morse. Robinson at home;
Decisions: Toynbee or luminol? Where the sun
Shines, Robinson in flowered trunks, eyes toward
The breakers. Where the night ends, Robinson in East Side bars.

Robinson in Glen plaid jacket, Scotch-grain shoes,
Black four-in-hand and oxford button-down,
The jeweled and silent watch that winds itself, the brief-
Case, covert topcoat, clothes for spring, all covering
His sad and usual heart, dry as a winter leaf.

Jackie Brown

Is this your life, jackie brown?
Poorly educated and forced to live on the poor side of town.
Is this your daughter, jackie brown?
This pretty little girl
In the worn out clothes
That have been hand-me down.
Is this your wife, jackie brown?
With sad blue eyes, walking on eggshells so you dont see her frown.
Is this your family, jackie brown?
Dream of vacationing on a mountain stream
And giving the world more than it gave you.
What ugly truths freedom brings
And it hasnt been very kind to you.
Is this your life, jackie brown?
Is this your meal, jackie brown?
Barely enough, Ive seen people throw away more than this out.
Is this your home, jackie brown?
This three room shack
With no running water
And the bathroom out back.
Is this your grave, jackie brown?
This little piece of limestone that says another desperate man took
Himself out.
Is this your dream, jackie brown?
Going nowhere and nowhere fast
We shame ourselves to watch people like this live.
But who gives a damn about jackie brown?
Just another lazy man who couldnt take what was his.
One helluva life jackie brown.
Forevermore, jackie brown
Amen and amen - jackie brown?

Ms. Jackie Blue's

Ms. Jackie was limble
Ms. Jackie was quick
Ms. Jackie was strong
She thought she had life licked
Ms. Jackie was determined to never, ever quit
She seemed to struggled with life and what it reallly meant
Ms. Jackie would often try many of the get rich tricks
Ms. Jackie really believed that she. had found her nitch,
The nitch that was right,
A perfect fit,
to later find out that it wasn't quite legit
Ms. Jackie then lost mind and would often have fits
Relentlessly chanting of how she must not quit
Yet, Ms. Jackie still somehow embraced the counterfeits
Ms. Jackie claimed to be superior with supernatural whit
Adhereing to voices that one should forget
Sadly enough, even thou it is painful to admit,
That all the right people and her most close friends
Simply couldn't do nothing to help bring
Ms. Jackie's fire for life back once again
Ms. Jackie's Blue's
Never let it happen to you!

Jackie Dont Go

Jackie was the focus of my fantasies
There was passion in the schoolyard
Upon the autumn leaves
Cuttin class was gettin easy,
Throwin good sense down the drain,
And while your touch would always please me,
It was love that erased the pain --
Believin that good times forever last,
Now love is a thing of the past
*jackie no, jackie dont go,
Youre a hard act to follow --
Jackie go slow, jackie please,
Im down on my knees, lets do it again*
I was head over heels, I was hard in love,
I put jackie on a pedestal so high above,
Rock n roll became our savior --
That alone was all it took --
And when it came to fool behavior,
Me and jackie, we wrote the book
Believin that good friends forever last,
Now love is a thing of the past
( * repeat)
( * repeat)
Jackie stay -- Im living each day
In the streets of the city callin your name
Jackie please, this is insane,
Lets do it again
In the beginning all the time we spent together,
Never further than a heartbeat away,
Did you try and tell me, jackie, you were leavin,
I couldnt see beyond yesterday

Oh Jackie

(tim james/steve mcclintock/tim heintz/kimberly feldman)
Somewhere down the road
A radio is playing
And every songs reminding me of you
I wonder where you are tonight
Jackie Im wishing I could turn back time
I cant believe this is really you
Oh jackie say it isnt so
Tell me that you never meant to let me go
Oh jackie am I all alone
Oh jackie say it isnt true
Tell me that Im not just someone you outgrew
Oh jackie, say it isnt true
Is this the way love ends
Is this the way it happens
Do all these feelings simply fade away
Its hard for me to understand
Jackie I thought that I was your best friend
Its not like you to turn and walk away
Oh jackie say it isnt so
Tell me that you never meant to let me go
Oh jackie am I all alone
Oh jackie say it isnt true
Tell me that Im not just someone you outgrew
Oh jackie, say it isnt true
Where ever you may be tonight
I wonder when you close your eyes
Have you forgotten me

Have You Seen Jackie?

Have you seen jackie?
Hes a strange strange strange little girl
Make up on his face and his hair in curls
Have you seen jackie?
Shes a strange strange strange little boy
Her long black beard is her pride and joy
And all the children follow him around
And all the grownups try to drag her down
So we sing
Hey, leave jackie alone
Hey, his pigeons have flown
Hey, shes never at home at all these days
Leave jackie alone
Have you seen jackie?
Hes an odd odd odd little fish
To fly around is his only wish
Have you seen jackie?
Shes a queer queer queer little bird
Shy and quiet neither scene nor herd
And all the rats will follow him around
The dogs and cats will chase her from the town
And we sing
Hey, leave jackie alone
Hey, his mind is all blown
Hey, shes not on the phone at all these days
Leave jackie alone
Jackie couldnt decide if he was a girl
Or if she was a boy
Have you seen jackie?

Brooklyn

Brooklyn
Child of freedom still new to this world
Brooklyn
Summer magic my sweet baby sweet girl
All the waiting all the praying
Brought the answer to all of the love weve been saving
All the hoping all the needing
Turned the dream of a vision into a real thing
Mamas happy
Brooklyn
Child of rhythm riding on a moonlit star
Brooklyn
Pretty daughter born with a smile
Daddy felt you fore he saw you
Mommy carried you so long
Mimi saw you fore she felt you
Four is a family so strong
My baby
Brooklyn
Child of children la is your home
Brooklyn
Sweetest princess well grow as you go
All the waiting all the praying
Brought the answer to all of the love weve been saving
All the hoping all the needing
Turned the dream of a vision into the real thing
Brooklyn
Child of music your song is of love
Brooklyn
Came together and I thank God above
Brooklyn
Child of freedom

Last Exit Brooklyn

When the sun crashes into your world
Look around and you try and find your girl
And youre daring, too sick of what you see
Out of town is the only place to be
When your life starts to run out of juice
Feel like dyin and you just want to get loose
Prayin moves dont make much sense to you
Seeing red before your feeling is blue
Last exit brooklyn....last exit brooklyn
Going back, getting out of this town
Stretch it lean and mean, it turns you around
Take your dreams and stretch them out on the street
Take your turn to get back on your feet
Feel the wheels singin over the ridge
Feel the song like oakland take you
All the time you knew you had the itch
All the girls were glad to see you
Last exit brooklyn....last exit brooklyn
Girl in ol v wont pray
Dont give you a hard time
All the girls from brooklyn say
Last exit brooklyn....last exit brooklyn
Do you remember the day you left the block
Your mama said you would live to regret it
Coming home, coming stoned, come in hope, coming ready
Are you holding steady
Last exit brooklyn....last exit brooklyn....last exit brooklyn

Jackie Blue

Ooh-hoo, jackie blue
Lives a life from inside of her room
Hides a smile when shes wearing a frown
Ooh, jackie, your not so down
You like your life in a free form style
Youll take an inch but youd love a mile
There never seems to be quite enough
Loving around us when your loving comes
Ooh-hoo, jackie blue
Whats a game, ooh, that you never lose
Ask a winner and youll probably find
Ooh, jackie they lost you some time
Dont try tell me that youre not aware
Of what youre doing and that you dont care
You say that its easy, just a natural thing
Like playing music that youve never seen
Ooh-hoo, jackie blue
Making wishes that never come true
Going places where youve never been
Ooh, jackie, youve blown it again
Ooh-hoo, jackie blue
Lives a life from inside her room
Makes you think that life is a drag
Ooh, jackie, what fun you have had

Mrs. Robinson

And heres to you Mrs. Robinson,
Jesus loves you more than you will know
Whoa Whoa Whoa
God bless you sweet Mrs. Robinson,
Heaven holds a place for those who pray
Hey Hey Hey
Hey Hey Hey
We'd like to now a little bit about you for our files
We'd like to help you learn to help yourself
Look around you, all you see are sympathetic eyes
Stroll around the grounds until you feel at home
And here's to you Mrs. Robinson,
Jesus loves you more than you will know
Whoa Whoa Whoa
God bless you sweet Mrs. Robinson,
Heaven holds a place for those who pray
Hey Hey Hey
Hide it in a hiding place where no one ever goes,
Put it in your pantry with your cupcakes
It' a little secret, just a Robinson affair,
But most of all you got to hide it from the kids
Koo Koo Ka-chu Mrs. Robinson
Jesus loves you more than you will know
Whoa Whoa Whoa
God Bless you sweet Mrs. Robinson,
Heaven holds a place for those who pray,
Hey Hey Hey
Hey Hey Hey
Sitting on a sofa on a Sunday afternoon,
Going to a candidate's debate
Laugh about it, shout about it when you got to choose,
Every way you look at it you'll lose
Where have you gone Joes D'Maggio?
Our nation turns its lonely eyes to you
Woo Woo Woo
What's that you say Mrs. Robinson?

Jackie

(Sinead O'connor cover )
Jackie left on a cold, dark night
Telling me he'd be home
Sailed the seas for a hundred years
And left me all alone
Now I've been dead for twenty years
I've been washing the sand with my ghostly tears
Searching the shores for my Jackie-oh
And I remember the day that the young man came
Said, your Jackie's gone, he is lost in the rain
And I ran to the beach
And laid me down
You're all wrong, I said
And they stared to the sand
That man knows the sea like the back of his hand
He'll be back some time
Laughing at you
And I've been waiting all this time
For my man to come, take his hand in mine
And lead me away
To unsailed shores
I've been washing the sand with my salty tears
Searching the shore these long years
And I'll walk the sea forever more
'til I find my Jackie-oh
Jackie-oh
Jackie-oh
Jackie-oh

Sociology Assignment

THE APPLICATION OF SOCIOLOGY OF EDUCATION IN CLASSROOM TEACHING

INTRODUCTION
Sociology of education, as defined by Pavalko (1976) , is the scientific analysis of the social processes and patterns involved in the educational system. It is concerned with educational aims, methods, and institutions in relation to social and cultural forces of the society in which they function. This assumes that education is a combination of social acts and it deals with human interaction. In the education of the individual, it concerns the influence of social life and social relationships on the development of personality. Sociology of education is very significant as it introduces a teacher to a collection of techniques that are required in classroom teaching. Such techniques include; understanding and applying interaction in the classroom, the disposition of norms to the students by the teachers, understanding teacher-student relationship and communication, provision of career guidance and finally understanding social roles of teachers and students. This essay, therefore, discusses how we, as teachers to be, can apply the above sociological techniques in classroom teaching in secondary schools.

INTERACTION
A classroom, like any other social group, requires all the members to participate and interact with each other for a common goal. A teacher as a leader in the classroom can make sure that there is interaction among his/her students by forming study groups or circles. In these study circles there is mutual influence and benefit among students since students can participate in the discussions that the group undertakes. Interaction in these groups can be cooperative and competitive among students (Ottaway,1960) .

In these groups members are in face to face interaction with each other and there are a small number of participants, this encourages the students to speak out their minds on a given topic. This is so because in a small group every student is given a chance to express himself/herself as compared to the whole class. This gives a chance to some students who can not express themselves fully when there are many people around them. This helps students to build self confidence since their views can be heard by their peers. It also builds a habit of doing things together as a result there is unity among members of the group (Ashley et. al.,1970) .

In this case, the teacher as a leader in the classroom does not dominate in the classroom activities but rather just controls the thoughts and behaviour of his pupils and sets the tone of the interaction patterns in the classroom. The teacher is also there to facilitate in the discussions. However, a teacher needs not to always be present in these groups since some students may not interact fully in the presence of their teacher than their peers. In this case, indirect control from a teacher may be more effective than direct (Ottaway,1960) .

NORMS
Sociology of education analyzes the sociological processes that have a bearing in the education system. One of such sociological processes is the disposition of norms that a teacher imparts in his/her students through interaction in class. The students’ awareness of these norms facilitates the teaching process, on the part of the teacher, and the learning process on the part of students. The impartation of norms on the students is referred to as the hidden curriculum because it is not included on the formal curriculum. Though not included on paper, the students are supposed to know these norms because the way they conduct themselves in class (morally) will affect the teaching and learning processes either positively or negatively. For instance, some students may choose not to cooperate in taking assignments. This tendency may be triggered by the students’ lack of proper direction in their behavior that departs from the values and norms that guide the society. Such students if not handled professionally by the teacher may cause havoc in class. This is where sociology of education becomes vital to classroom management in secondary schools. In sociology of education a teacher learns how to manage students, both those who are morally upright and those morally decayed.

Sociology of education also instructs teachers to be exemplary. The teaching ethics are also very clear on this point as Ashley et al. (1970) declare that teaching professional training emphasizes moral virtues and exemplary behavior on the part of teachers. They have to behave, dress and speak as role models. True to that proverb that says “action speaks louder than words”, teacher’s behavior will have a great impact on the conduct of his/her students. If the teacher is not morally upright the students are likely to be like him/her in their conduct. One other point that may help curb indiscipline in students is through the provision of enough work to keep the students busy. This is helpful because when the students are idle they tend to misbehave (Abromitis,2009) .

TEACHER-STUDENT RELATIONSHIP AND COMMUNICATION
The maintenance of a harmonious social relationship between a teacher and those undergoing socialization (students) , is one of the applications of sociology of education in a classroom. The social interaction within the classroom will help teachers understand the psychological variables that affect the social behaviour of students. For instance, a student’s performance may be affected by poverty and funeral at home among other things. This stresses that each individual is a member of a wide family and gets influenced by social and cultural factors as well. A teacher, therefore, is supposed to identify those students who are not doing well in class as expected and try to find the source of their problems and counsel them accordingly. For instance, sociology of education enables a teacher to establish the real cause of impoliteness in some students that even cause destructions during classes. A teacher does this through inquiries that he/she makes about the naughty students’ back ground that sometimes may be responsible for the students’ bad behavior.

The teacher’s awareness of such backgrounds will enable him/her to know where to start the intervention of shaping the behavior of students. When the good behavior of once ill-mannered students is restored, the teaching and learning processes go smoothly. This suggests that there should be a good communication and interaction between teachers and students. However, Zeleny (1948) as cited in Pavalko (1976) warns that the teacher should not be too friendly with the students. This is because it will be very difficult to provide counseling to them and eventually fail to induce changed behaviour when they go wrong.
CAREER GUIDANCE
A school as a social institution is expected to produce people who are reliable for continuity of a society as far as leadership and management of social institutions is concerned. In view of this, we can say it is important for teachers to include lessons in decision-making and career guidance. Though career guidance is over looked by many schools, it plays an important role. Harris (1999) says career guidance helps students to identify the work-related competences they are developing through the various school subjects and relate them to their career planning. In short, career guidance acts as an advocate for students in establishing their career ladders.

Career guidance needs enforcement because not all students are aware of the different job opportunities that are in the corporate world. For instance, asking children from rural areas about their ambitions, most of them will talk about nursing and teaching as opposed to those from urban areas who will talk of becoming, a pilot, an accountant, a lawyer and many more. This is due to parents’ or guardians’ ‘level of education and children’s exposure to media or other sources of information. Therefore, a teacher should not take it for granted that all students are aware about careers.

A teacher can impart career lessons through different ways. First of all, a teacher needs to include in his or her curriculum a special time at least 20 to 30 minutes per week for career lessons (Harris,1999) . In a classroom, a teacher may use personal approach, where he or she can ask students of their ambitions and provide information on the requirements and the institution(s) that offer(s) them. Secondly, a teacher can use interactive and experimental exercises, where he or she can put students into groups and ask them to interview different personnel on their professions and how they managed to achieve them. Afterwards students can present their findings to a class. Apart from motivating students, this method can also promote interaction between students and the community.

SOCIAL ROLES OF TEACHERS AND STUDENTS
Social role is among the five basic concepts in the sociology of education. A social role is a behavior appropriate to a particular position in a social group. A classroom as a sub-social system has actors and participants, who are teachers and students respectively. Sociology of education enables a teacher to realize his/her role and at the same time helps the students realize theirs. The teacher playing his/her role has to teach and encourage the students to learn. The role of a teacher is really a combination of sub-roles which the skillful teacher fits to produce a useful pattern of teaching. One of these sub-roles includes, being an instructor, whereby the teacher gives instructions and shows the students in a classroom how to learn and answer questions. This is the role the teacher prepares for, explicitly and directly. On the other hand, the students on their part have to listen, attend classes, submit assignments regularly and take examinations. Cooperation demands high degree of predictability of conduct and requires that individuals should make personal sacrifices in favour of societal expectations. In other words, where a teacher’s personal interests or commitments are in conflict with his or her role as a teacher, his/her personal interests have to give way to his/her teaching role (Ezewu,1983) .

There is a social and a personal aspect of every role that is significant to an individual. For instance, a person learns the expected and rewarded behaviour for each role. Students learn when to give priority to a particular role. In a classroom situation, the students learn to take the role of a pupil most of the time rather than the role of a playmate. (Havighurst et al.,1963) .

CONCLUSION
After discussing the above sociological techniques we have the audacity to conclude that Sociology of education adds to the teacher’s kit of intellectual tools. In this case, a set of sociological insights and concepts that will allow him/her to take account in his decision-making organization, cultural and interpersonal factors at work in his/her environment. Therefore, Sociology of education is essential as it equips teachers with great knowledge on how to socialize their students in a classroom situation in secondary schools.

Brooklyn Blues

Words by Bruce Sussman and Jack Feldman
Music By Barry Manilow
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
See I flew in from the West Coast
Just the other day.
Yes, I flew in from the West Coast
and we circled J.F.K.
The movie ended and I pulled up the shade,
looked out the window while the Muzak played.
But in my head I'm singin',
singin' the Brooklyn Blues.
Oh, yea.
When you're growin' up in Brooklyn
the Bridge is like a friend.
Said when you're growin' up in Brooklyn
that Bridge is sure your friend.
Because that river, looks a hundred miles wide
when all your dreams are on the other side,
and th at can start you singin'
singin' the Brooklyn Blues.
Oh, yea.
Now I've got myself some money
a mansion in Bel-aire.
Yes I've spent a lot of money
and I"ve been most ev'ry-where.
But still there's somethin' missin' I"ve got to find,
a part of me I must've left behind,
that makes a guy start feelin',
feelin' those Brooklyn Blues.
My my.
I've sung love songs to a princess
more than once or twice.
I"ve sung rock 'n' roll in Paris,
jazz in paradise.
But there's a song of mine I couldn't have sung,
a tune I started back when I was young.
Now I've come home to finish,
finish my Brooklyn Blues.
My Brooklyn Blues.

Robinson

The dog stops barking after Robinson has gone.
His act is over. The world is a gray world,
Not without violence, and he kicks under the grand piano,
The nightmare chase well under way.

The mirror from Mexico, stuck to the wall,
Reflects nothing at all. The glass is black.
Robinson alone provides the image Robinsonian.

Which is all of the room--walls, curtains,
Shelves, bed, the tinted photograph of Robinson's first wife,
Rugs, vases panatelas in a humidor.
They would fill the room if Robinson came in.

The pages in the books are blank,
The books that Robinson has read. That is his favorite chair,
Or where the chair would be if Robinson were here.

All day the phone rings. It could be Robinson
Calling. It never rings when he is here.

Outside, white buildings yellow in the sun.
Outside, the birds circle continuously
Where trees are actual and take no holiday.

The BALLYSHANNON foundered off the coast of Cariboo,
And down in fathoms many went the captain and the crew;
Down went the owners - greedy men whom hope of gain allured:
Oh, dry the starting tear, for they were heavily insured.

Besides the captain and the mate, the owners and the crew,
The passengers were also drowned excepting only two:
Young PETER GRAY, who tasted teas for BAKER, CROOP, AND CO.,
And SOMERS, who from Eastern shores imported indigo.

These passengers, by reason of their clinging to a mast,
Upon a desert island were eventually cast.
They hunted for their meals, as ALEXANDER SELKIRK used,
But they couldn't chat together - they had not been introduced.

For PETER GRAY, and SOMERS too, though certainly in trade,
Were properly particular about the friends they made;
And somehow thus they settled it without a word of mouth -
That GRAY should take the northern half, while SOMERS took the south.

On PETER'S portion oysters grew - a delicacy rare,
But oysters were a delicacy PETER couldn't bear.
On SOMERS' side was turtle, on the shingle lying thick,
Which SOMERS couldn't eat, because it always made him sick.

GRAY gnashed his teeth with envy as he saw a mighty store
Of turtle unmolested on his fellow-creature's shore.
The oysters at his feet aside impatiently he shoved,
For turtle and his mother were the only things he loved.

And SOMERS sighed in sorrow as he settled in the south,
For the thought of PETER'S oysters brought the water to his mouth.
He longed to lay him down upon the shelly bed, and stuff:
He had often eaten oysters, but had never had enough.

How they wished an introduction to each other they had had
When on board the BALLYSHANNON! And it drove them nearly mad
To think how very friendly with each other they might get,
If it wasn't for the arbitrary rule of etiquette!

One day, when out a-hunting for the MUS RIDICULUS,
GRAY overheard his fellow-man soliloquizing thus:
"I wonder how the playmates of my youth are getting on,
M'CONNELL, S. B. WALTERS, PADDY BYLES, and ROBINSON?"

These simple words made PETER as delighted as could be,
Old chummies at the Charterhouse were ROBINSON and he!
He walked straight up to SOMERS, then he turned extremely red,
Hesitated, hummed and hawed a bit, then cleared his throat, and said:

Jack & Diane

A little ditty about Jack and Diane
Two American kids growin' up in the heartland
Jackie's gonna be a football star
Diane's debutante in the backseat of Jackie's car
Suckin' on a chili dog outside the tastee freeze
Diane's sittin' on Jackie's lap
He's got his hand between her knees
Jackie say, "Hey Diane lets run off
behind the shady trees.
Dribble off those Bobby Brooks.
Let me do what I please."
Say ah
Oh yeah, life goes on
Long after the thrill of livin' is gone, say ah
Oh yeah, life goes on
Long after the thrill of livin' is gone, they walk on
Jackie sits back reflects his thoughts for the moment
Scratches his head and does his best James Dean
Well then there and Diane, we oughtta run off to the city
Diane says, Baby, you ain't missin' a thing
And Jackie say a,
"Oh yeah, life goes on,
long after the thrill of livin' is gone.
Oh yeah, they say life goes on,
long after the thrill of livin' is gone."
Gonna let it rock
Let it roll
Let the Bible Belt come
And save my soul
Hold on to 16 as long as you can
Changes come around real soon
Make us women and men
Oh yeah, life goes on
Long after the thrill of livin' is gone
Oh yeah, they say life goes on
Long after the thrill of livin' is gone
A little ditty about Jack and Diane
Two American kids doin' the best they can

Booger McNulty and Me

In 1948 Booger McNulty's coal yard stirred
constant gossip among the citizens who lived
in little bungalows on narrow blocks
in my far corner of Chicago.
That was more than 60 years ago,
a time when families took Sunday walks
and went back home in time to hear
Jack Benny on the radio.
A Sunday walk didn't cost a cent,
a price my parents could afford.

When my parents took a Sunday walk,
my sister and I always had to go along,
and every time we'd pass Booger's place,
I'd hear my mother ask my father
what could possibly be on the other side
of Booger's 10-foot fence.
Hoping to avoid a conversation,
my father always said he didn't know
but he believed it couldn't just be coal.

Back then, every kid in the neighborhood
wanted to climb that fence and look around.
But Booger didn't feature visitors.
According to the boy whose keister caught
a chunk of coal from Booger's slingshot,
there was nothing on the other side
except for pigeons and a lot of coal.

In the bungalows surrounding Booger's place,
immigrants from everywhere slept off beer and garlic
when they weren't working, which was pretty often,
according to my mother. My father always worked,
digging graves with the other men,
most of them, like him, from Ireland.
He dug graves because some Bulgarian
broke his nose, after which my mother ruled
no more boxing. He'd been undefeated until then.

I was ten in 1948 and I'd climb Booger's fence
when I was certain he was gone for the night.
Inside the yard I'd climb the piles of coal
until I got tired and then I'd go home
and take a bath before my father saw me.
My mother never let my father see me
cloaked in the soot of Booger's coal
