Sestina: Altaforte

Loquitur: En Bertrans de Born.
Dante Alighieri put this man in hell for that he was a
stirrer-up of strife.
Eccovi!
Judge ye!
Have I dug him up again?
The scene in at his castle, Altaforte. "Papiols" is his jongleur.
"The Leopard," the device of Richard (Cúur de Lion).

I

Damn it all! all this our South stinks peace.
You whoreson dog, Papiols, come! Let's to music!
I have no life save when the swords clash.
But ah! when I see the standards gold, vair, purple, opposing
And the broad fields beneath them turn crimson,
Then howl I my heart nigh mad with rejoicing.

II

In hot summer have I great rejoicing
When the tempests kill the earth's foul peace,
And the lightnings from black heav'n flash crimson,
And the fierce thunders roar me their music
And the winds shriek through the clouds mad, opposing,
And through all the riven skies God's swords clash.

III

Hell grant soon we hear again the swords clash!
And the shrill neighs of destriers in battle rejoicing,
Spiked breast to spiked breast opposing!
Better one hour's stour than a year's peace
With fat boards, bawds, wine and frail music!
Bah! there's no wine like the blood's crimson!

IV

And I love to see the sun rise blood-crimson.
And I watch his spears through the dark clash
And it fills all my heart with rejoicing
And pries wide my mouth with fast music
When I see him so scorn and defy peace,
His lone might 'gainst all darkness opposing.

V

The man who fears war and squats opposing
My words for stour, hath no blood of crimson
But is fit only to rot in womanish peace

Blondie Sings Atomic Cultural Icon Symphonies

'Atomic' video by Blondie
still rocks Debbie Harry
in hot days vital memory
her super beautiful body

voice left with legend heart of glass
thrilled early electronic music days
record platinum rocked vibe videos
Blondie ruled punk image mega forces

new super sleek figure sex smittens
unique purred distinctive presences
shift force smolders in vibrant songs
back in days fire burned dance beats

long way from Nailin' Palin limericks
'breach of sensibility good taste gaffes'
educated intellectuals lose stolen scenes
to busty bombshell Marilyn pose routines

melodramatic star role her seductiveness
comic effect sell 'dumb blonde' personas
model major sex symbol pales in mega voices
when Blondie sings cultural icon symphonies

Mississippi Kid

Ive got my pistols in my pockets boys,
Im alabama bound.
Ive got my pistols in my pockets boys, im
Im alabama bound.
Well, Im not looking for no trouble
But nobody dogs me round.
Well, Im going to fetch my woman, people
Tri-cities here I come.
Well, Im going to fetch my woman, people
Tri-cities here I come
cause she was raised up on that cornbread
And I know shes gonna give me some.
When the kid hits alabama, people
Dont you try and dog him round.
When the kid hits alabama, people
Dont you try and dog him round.
cause if you people cause me trouble,
Then Ive got to put you in the ground.
Well, I was born in mississippi
And I dont take any stuff from you
Well, I was born in mississippi
And I dont take any stuff from you
And if I hit you on your head
Boy, its got to make you black and blue.
Well, I ride to alabama
With my pistols out by my side
Well, I ride to alabama
With my pistols out by my side
cause down in alabama
You can run, but you sure cant hide

Homo Erectus

(kinky friedman & panama red)
I left barber college
Searchin for knowledge,
Went to the university.
I must confess, sir
This lady professor
She turned me on to anthropology.
Now Im a homo erectus
Got to connect this
Bone that I discovered yesterday.
Tyrannosaurus
Lived in the forest,
Died because its heart got in the way.
Dear doctor howard
Come down from your tower
And join me for lunch at the y.
Although youre thirty
I still think youre pretty
Lets give it that good ole college try.
cause Im a homo erectus
Got to connect this
Bone that I discovered yesterday.
Tyrannosaurus
Lived in the forest,
Died because its heart got in the way.
Ok!
Hey jomo kenyatta
No, no, youre not a
Australopithecine boogieman.
Its took us a jillion
But were all still here, been
Boogeyin since boogeyin began.
And Im a homo erectus
Got to connect this
Bone that I discovered yesterday.
Tyrannosaurus
Lived in the forest,
Died because its heart got in the way.
You know Im a homo erectus
Got to connect this
Bone that I discovered yesterday.
Tyrannosaurus lived in the forest,
Died because its heart got in the way.
You know that Im a homo erectus
Got to connect this
Bone that I discovered yesterday.
Tyrannosaurus
Lived in the forest,
Died because its heart got in the way.
Im but a homo erectus

Byron

Canto the Second

I
Oh ye! who teach the ingenuous youth of nations,
Holland, France, England, Germany, or Spain,
I pray ye flog them upon all occasions,
It mends their morals, never mind the pain:
The best of mothers and of educations
In Juan's case were but employ'd in vain,
Since, in a way that's rather of the oddest, he
Became divested of his native modesty.

II
Had he but been placed at a public school,
In the third form, or even in the fourth,
His daily task had kept his fancy cool,
At least, had he been nurtured in the north;
Spain may prove an exception to the rule,
But then exceptions always prove its worth -—
A lad of sixteen causing a divorce
Puzzled his tutors very much, of course.

III
I can't say that it puzzles me at all,
If all things be consider'd: first, there was
His lady-mother, mathematical,
A—never mind; his tutor, an old ass;
A pretty woman (that's quite natural,
Or else the thing had hardly come to pass);
A husband rather old, not much in unity
With his young wife—a time, and opportunity.

IV
Well—well, the world must turn upon its axis,
And all mankind turn with it, heads or tails,
And live and die, make love and pay our taxes,
And as the veering wind shifts, shift our sails;
The king commands us, and the doctor quacks us,
The priest instructs, and so our life exhales,
A little breath, love, wine, ambition, fame,
Fighting, devotion, dust,—perhaps a name.

V
I said that Juan had been sent to Cadiz -—
A pretty town, I recollect it well -—
'T is there the mart of the colonial trade is
(Or was, before Peru learn'd to rebel),
And such sweet girls—I mean, such graceful ladies,
Their very walk would make your bosom swell;
I can't describe it, though so much it strike,
Nor liken it—I never saw the like:

The Power Of Thy Sword

Lord of battle I pray on bended knee conquest by the rising sun
I'll wait for thy command with flame and blood at hand
glory and a broken sword.

I'm the master of the world I have no fear of man or beast
Born inside the soul of the world
Riding hard breaking bone with steel and stone
Eternal might I was born to wield.

Let us drink to the battles we've lived and we've fought
Celebrate the pain and havoc we have wrought
Great heroes charge into the fight
From the north to the south in the black of night

The clash of honor calls to stand when others fall
Gods of war feel the power of my sword

Drink to the battles we've lived and we've fought
Celebrate the pain and havoc we have wrought
Great heroes charge into the fight
From the north to the south in the black of night

Fierce is my blade fierce is my hate born to die in battle
I laugh at my fate
Now pay in blood when your blood has been spilled
You're never forgiven death is fulfilled !

The clash of honor calls to stand when others fall
Gods of war feel the power of my sword

The clash of honor calls
I will stand when others fall
Open magic doors
The will know the power of my sword

There is blood in my hands there is blood in my eyes
With blood in my voice I scream as you die
Thirsting for vengeance and mounds of the slain
Shaking the forest onto the plain

Fierce is my blade fierce is my hate born to die in battle
I laugh at my fate
Now pay in blood when your blood has been spilled
You're never forgiven death is fulfilled !

The clash of honor calls to stand when others fall
Gods of war feel the power of my sword

Know the power of my sword
Know the power of my sword

My Big Bro

We spend hours together
like best buds do.
Know how the saying goes,
you laugh, I laugh.
We share something more
special than normal families.
We are friends in my
world.
You and I both know
I'm crazy
and I make your head hurt.
But I know you
believe in me.
Magnets clash together
you can pull them apart.
Eventually they will clash
and be together again.
Thats me and you
two magnets that seem to clash
once in a while we will be pulled apart.
Eventually we will clash
together again.
My big brother
and everything to me.
People might think they've
figured you out
deep down I know they
shouldnt unpredict you.
No matter what you will
always cease to amaze me.

The Sacred Shrines

Turn back the clock 1977
When we were children
Who liked to rock and dance in parks
On the 4th of July.

Turn up the Ramones real loud,
Sex Pistols in the city,
And it was So Easy to Fall in Love
FM radio afternoon.

There were so many bands
And I remember the hour your mother
Told us Elvis Presley was dead,
It was a sad end to the summer.

No more county fairgrounds,
No more swimming at the lake;
In time, everything disappears with innocence
After the heart begins to break.

The record stores
In the blink of an eye were no more;
Back in the day, it was so meaningful
To meet in a place of music,
But the sacred shrines all have fallen.

Elizabeth Barrett Browning

Sixth Book

THE English have a scornful insular way
Of calling the French light. The levity
Is in the judgment only, which yet stands;
For say a foolish thing but oft enough,
(And here's the secret of a hundred creeds,–
Men get opinions as boys learn to spell,
By re-iteration chiefly) the same thing
Shall pass at least for absolutely wise,
And not with fools exclusively. And so,
We say the French are light, as if we said
The cat mews, or the milch-cow gives us milk:
Say rather, cats are milked, and milch cows mew,
For what is lightness but inconsequence,
Vague fluctuation 'twixt effect and cause,
Compelled by neither? Is a bullet light,
That dashes from the gun-mouth, while the eye
Winks, and the heart beats one, to flatten itself
To a wafer on the white speck on a wall
A hundred paces off? Even so direct,
So sternly undivertible of aim,
Is this French people.
All idealists
Too absolute and earnest, with them all
The idea of a knife cuts real flesh;
And still, devouring the safe interval
Which Nature placed between the thought and act,
They threaten conflagration to the world
And rush with most unscrupulous logic on
Impossible practice. Set your orators
To blow upon them with loud windy mouths
Through watchword phrases, jest or sentiment,
Which drive our burley brutal English mobs
Like so much chaff, whichever way they blow,–
This light French people will not thus be driven.
They turn indeed; but then they turn upon
Some central pivot of their thought and choice,
And veer out by the force of holding fast.
–That's hard to understand, for Englishmen
Unused to abstract questions, and untrained
To trace the involutions, valve by valve,
In each orbed bulb-root of a general truth,
And mark what subtly fine integument
Divides opposed compartments. Freedom's self
Comes concrete to us, to be understood,
Fixed in a feudal form incarnately
To suit our ways of thought and reverence,
The special form, with us, being still the thing.
With us, I say, though I'm of Italy
My mother's birth and grave, by father's grave
And memory; let it be,–a poet's heart

Our Old 'Sanyo

Remember our old 'Sanyo' three-in-one,
A musical delight to my young mind,
Listening spellbound as our vinyl spun,
'Twas with tape-deck and radio combined.

Recalling when it first came to our house,
The best invention ever, it was hailed,
Excited, but as quiet as a mouse,
Itching for this new voice to be unveiled.

A few things first, required some pointing out,
Stereo jargon that we ought to know,
'Volume control negates the need to shout
For spinning discs, you switch it to phono.'

'All albums should be played at thirty-three,
For singles you best change to forty-five,
The stylus, always handle carefully,
Drop in the groove and hear it come alive.'

One last glance at dials of treble and bass,
Now what to play, oh such a glorious choice! ,
Pick Blondie with her fragile 'Heart of Glass'
Or air Rod Stewart's distinctive, raspy voice-

My brother wore out needles playing Queen,
To Shalimar, Mam was a loyal fan,
On Robbins, Cash and Rogers, Dad was keen,
My sister loved Le Bon's, Duran Duran

And Boomtown Rats, their 'Tonic for the Troops',
With Geldof's zealous rantings pouring out
Could oft' be heard among our favourite groups,
The Clash's lyrics, Strummer, he would spout.

For years the 'Sanyo' played impartially,
At certain times this must have been a test,
A band who went unheard regrettably,
Pink Floyd, unknownst to me, who were the best.
