George Meredith

Margaret's Bridal Eve

I

The old grey mother she thrummed on her knee:
There is a rose that's ready;
And which of the handsome young men shall it be?
There's a rose that's ready for clipping.

My daughter, come hither, come hither to me:
There is a rose that's ready;
Come, point me your finger on him that you see:
There's a rose that's ready for clipping.

O mother, my mother, it never can be:
There is a rose that's ready;
For I shall bring shame on the man marries me:
There's a rose that's ready for clipping.

Now let your tongue be deep as the sea:
There is a rose that's ready;
And the man'll jump for you, right briskly will he:
There's a rose that's ready for clipping.

Tall Margaret wept bitterly:
There is a rose that's ready;
And as her parent bade did she:
There's a rose that's ready for clipping.

O the handsome young man dropped down on his knee:
There is a rose that's ready;
Pale Margaret gave him her hand, woe's me!
There's a rose that's ready for clipping.

II

O mother, my mother, this thing I must say:
There is a rose in the garden;
Ere he lies on the breast where that other lay:
And the bird sings over the roses.

Now, folly, my daughter, for men are men:
There is a rose in the garden;
You marry them blindfold, I tell you again:
And the bird sings over the roses.

O mother, but when he kisses me!
There is a rose in the garden;
My child, 'tis which shall sweetest be!
And the bird sings over the roses.

O mother, but when I awake in the morn!

Harmony (From" Harmony")

Harmony
Unforgettable harmony
Harmony
First there was harmony
And there was rhyme
This was our time
Harmony
Did we have harmony
And that's just about all we had!
Suddenly
A little harmony
And the poverty's not so bad
Thin, we were
Poor as sin in berlin, we were!
Patches on our pants
Mercif'lly, when you're in harmony
You're in a trance
Others went marching
Not us, we'd dance
No one in grodnogubernia
Ever learned to dance like this!
Spoken:
(Believe it or not I was a rabbi before all this started!
In grodnogubernia yet!)
If you're in grodnogubernia
Tell em', this you shouldn't miss!
Harmony
All arm in arm were we
Well, except when the punches flew
Squabbles, sure
But squabbles don't endure
When there's harmony in the brew
Then did we
Oh, so splendidly blend, did we
Like a spell had come
It was clear
My pals and I could hear
A different drum
Outside they hollered!
But we hadharmony!
In this joint
All encounters with counterpoint
End in harmony
And it's clear
No man's a solo here
Not even me
No solo mio!
No we've got harmony!
When we've got harmony
Then just maybe we've got a chance

Poetry Sings

When poetry is anger
It sings to me furiously
Like thunder clashing into the Earth
With vigorous authority

When poetry is comfort
It sings to me gently
Like a mother's touch
Soothing her child from an afflicting pain

When poetry is bitterness
It sings to me harshly
Like back stabbers leaving another
In the cold, because they can't handle the situation

When poetry is driven
It sings to me energetically
Like an underdog, whom start to finish
Strives itself to victory

When poetry is hate
It sings to me vengefully
Coming towards you like a nuclear missle
Intended to dispose of your existence

When poetry is love
It sings to me tenderly
As if an angel are tranqualizing my ears
With their divine voices

When poetry is vulgar
It sings to me villianously
As if I'm it's prize
For the obscene thoughts it deviously conjers up

When poetry is sultry
It sings to me passionately
Like an enticing hot and moist body
Engulfed with lust, provocatively captivating me

When poetry is fear
It sings to me timidly
Like an individual with anxiety towards a phobia
Prefering gone from their conscious

When poetry is courage
It sings to me bravely
Like a patriot who defends its rights
Against the tyrants of his/her nation

Harmony (feat. Kenny Loggins)

Clint Black & Kenny Loggins
With the rivers running to the sky
To rain across the land
Our children's children's sands of time
Are slipping through our hands.
Take heed in what's become of Eden
You and me, from seed to seed
Just how does your garden grow?
It's likely only Heaven knows.
Harmony -- From the very start
Weren't we changing it?
Don't we all agree, that in every part
We're more than rearranging harmony.
Do we move the mountains that we climb
Just because we're here?
Can we show the forests to the blind
To see the trees we clear?
And if Mother Nature holds her ground
And our seeds are still around
Will we watch our garden grow
To something only Heaven knows?
Harmony -- We're the only one's
Who can't live in it
Everything and everyone
Can get along in every way in harmony.
Harmony -- From the very start
Weren't we changing it?
Dont we all agree that in every part
We're more than rearranging harmony.
Chorus:
I believe it's gonna be
When everybody here can sing along
Singin' in harmony
Stand on up, say the word
Together, all of our voices can be heard
Everybody knows the key
To livin' in harmony.
Take heed in what's become of Eden
You and me, from seed to seed
Just how does your garden grow?
It's likely only Heaven knows.
Harmony -- We all just have to believe
Don't we all agree, that in every part
We're more than rearranging harmony.
Chorus:
I believe it's gonna be
When everybody here can sing along
Singin' in harmony
(Stand on up, I believe)
I believe in harmony

Harmony With Darkness

It is extremely clear,
You travel with discomfort.
And sip on agonies that leave you drained.
The dripping of them from your lips...
Disappoint with those expectations,
You neither receive nor get!
From the exposure of it!

It is clearly known you want this shown.
While secluding your delusions.
Although standards you maintain...
Have strained relationships,
You once had gained.

There is an unhappiness kept self inflicted.
Your treasure chest of gifts,
You have allowed restricted!
They've become diminished like heirlooms replaced.
With a pawning done...
And etched upon your saddened face!

You are in harmony with darkness!
A tune sung and kept reminisced.
You are in harmony with darkness!
And plugged you are...
Right into it!

It is extremely clear,
You travel with discomfort.
That you alone have invited into your home.
And it is kept pampered like a loyal devoted pet.
One you expect to shower you with misery.
From Sunrise to Sunset!

You are in harmony with darkness.
And you've name it 'Eminent'.
Isn't it...
Eminent?

You are in harmony with darkness.
And it is permanently,
Un-resisted.

There is an unhappiness kept self inflicted.
Your treasure chest of gifts,
You have allowed restricted!
They've become diminished like heirlooms replaced.
With a pawning done...
And etched upon your saddened face!

My Heart Sings

My heart sings.
My heart sings the songs of happiness.
My heart sings the songs of joy.
My heart sings the songs of peace.
My heart sings the songs of the Blues.
My heart sings the songs of the Gospel.
My heart sings the songs of good news.
My heart cries a melody for all to hear.
My heart sings the harmonies of love.
My heart sings a song of beauty
that comes from the Thorne Birds
just before they die.
My heart sings songs to keep me alive.
My heart sings songs for as long as it beats.
My heart sings forever.
My heart sings haluwasa.
My heart sings.

When Smokey Sings

Debonair lullabies in melodies revealed
In deep despair on lonely nights
He knows just how you feel
The slyest rhymes - the sharpest suits
In miracles made real
Like a bird in flight on a hot sweet night
You know youre right just to hold her tight
He soothes it right - makes it outtasite
And everythings good in the world tonight!
When smokey sings - I hear violins
When smokey sings - I forget everything
As shes packing her things
As shes spreading her wings
The front door might slam
But the back door it rings
And smokey sings...he sings
Elegance in eloquence - for sale or rent or hire
Should I say - yes I match his best
Then I would be a liar
Symphonies that soothe the rage
When lovers hearts catch fire
Like a bird in flight on a hot sweet night
You know youre right just to hold her tight
He soothes it right - makes it outtasite
And everythings good in the world tonight!
When smokey sings - I hear violins
When smokey sings - I forget everything
As shes packing her things
As shes spreading her wings
Smashing the hell
With the heaven she brings
Then smokey sings...he sings
Luther croons
Slys the original - originator
James screams
Marvin was the only innovator
But nothing can compare
Nothing can compare
When smokey sings
When smokey sings - I hear violins
When smokey sings - I forget everything
As shes packing her things
As shes spreading her wings
She threw back the ring
When smokey sings...
Smokey sings...
Smokey sings...

Boys In The Band

(brown)
With mr soul or king creole
You gotta go with the man in the band
Hell be your guide
Singing la la la la
But what makes mr politic
A lot of words another trick
Turn peace into war
Singing ha ha ha ha
Ooh its not the way we want it
Not the way at all
Not the way to change our minds
Our backs up against the wall
The boys in the band all live in harmony
For lifes a poem
And we can make it rhyme
The boys in the band all live in harmony
Lets get it together before we
Go down, down, down
I dont want to theorise it
Just hope people realise
The simple melody can free your soul
And let you be man what you are
And fly la la la
But every back street slum where
Pushers push and hookers hook
Just wont set you free with ha ha ha ha
Oooh its not the way we want it
Not the way at all
Not the way to change our minds
Our backs up against the wall
The boys in the band all live in harmony
For lifes a poem
And we can make it rhyme
The boys in the band all live in harmony
Lets get it together before we
Go down, down, down
Break
The boys in the band all live in harmony
The boys in the band all live in harmony
Oooh its not the way we want it
Not the way at all
Not the way to change our minds
Our backs up against the wall
The boys in the band all live in harmony
The boys in the band all live in harmony
The boys in the band all live in harmony
The boys in the band all live in harmony

Johnny One Note

Johnny could only sing one note
And the note he sings was this
Ah!
Poor johnny one-note
Sang out with gusto
And just overlorded the place
Poor johnny one-note
Yelled willy nilly
Until he was bleu in the face
For holding one note was his ace
Couldnt hear the brass
Couldnt hear the drum
He was in a class
By himself, by gum!
Poor johnny one-note
Got in aida
Indeed a great chance to be brave
He took his one note
Howled like the north wind
Brought forth wind that made critics rave,
While verdi turned round in his grave!
Couldnt hear the flute
Or the big trombone
Evry one was mute
Johnny stood alone.
Cats and dogs stopped yapping
Lions in the zoo
All were jealous of johnnys big trill
Thunder claps stopped clapping,
Traffic ceased its roar,
And they tell us niagra stood still.
He stopped the train whistles,
Boat whistles,
Steam whistles,
Cop whistles,
All whistles bowed to his skill
Sing johnny one-note,
Sing out with gusto and
Just overwhelm all the crowd
Ah!
So sing johnny one-note, out loud!!
Sing johnny one-note
Sing johnny one-note out loud!

Pure & Easy

There once was a note, pure and easy,
There once was a note, pure and easy,
Playing so free, like a breath rippling by.
Playing so free, like a breath rippling by.
The note is eternal, I hear it, it sees me,
The note is eternal, I hear it, it sees me,
Forever we blend it, forever we die.
Forever we blend it, forever we die.
I listened and I heard music in a word,
I listened and I heard music in a word,
And words when you played your guitar,
And words when you played your guitar,
The noise that I was hearing was a million people cheering,
The noise that I was hearing was a million people cheering,
And a child flew past me riding in a star.
And a child flew past me riding in a star.
As people assemble,
As people assemble,
Civilization is trying to find a new way to die,
Civilization is trying to find a new way to die,
But killing is really merely scene changer,
But killing is really merely scene changer,
All men are bored with other mens lies.
All men are bored with other mens lies.
I listened and I heard music in a word,
I listened and I heard music in a word,
And words when you played your guitar,
And words when you played your guitar,
The noise that I was hearing was a million people cheering,

And a child flew past me riding in a star.
Gas on the hillside, oil in the teacup,
Gas on the hillside, oil in the teacup,
Watch all the chords of life lose their joy,
Watch all the chords of life lose their joy,
Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness,
Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness,
The note that began all can also destroy.
The note that began all can also destroy.
We all know success when we all find our own dreams,
We all know success when we all find our own dreams,
And our love is enough to knock down any walls,
And our love is enough to knock down any walls,
And the futures been seen as men try to realize,
And the futures been seen as men try to realize,
The simple secret of the note in us all.
The simple secret of the note in us all.
I listened and I heard music in a word,

Grand Illusion

Oh grand illusion, like the fade away
Take me and go out and play, oh yeah
Its no intrusion, its like a rainy day
That can wash the clouds away of this pain inside
Harmony, we need harmony
Find the melody that puts our hearts in tune
Harmony, we need harmony
Simple symphony that makes us feel brand new
Oh grand illusion, like to fade away
Take me and go out and play, oh yeah
Its no intrusion, its like a rainy day

That can wash the clouds away of this pain inside
Come on now, boy, put it on the line
Take some space just to ease your mind
And to think it through

I've Got The Melody (Deep In My Heart)

You've got the music in your heart,
I know just how to make it start.
You know the song that makes me sing,
You know the tune, so play my strings.
'Cause I've got the melody deep in my heart,
I could sing it alone, but I'd rather not.
You've got the harmony deep in your soul,
If we sing it together, our love will hold.
It sounds just like a symphony,
Something composed by you and me.
I hear the music that we make,
The sound of love is what it takes.
To coax out a melody straight from our hearts,
Let us sing it together, don't ever stop.
Let's add the harmony straight from our souls,
'Cause if we sing together now,
We sing together now,
We sing, we sing.

The Four Seasons : Spring

Come, gentle Spring! ethereal Mildness! come,
And from the bosom of yon dropping cloud,
While music wakes around, veil'd in a shower
Of shadowing roses, on our plains descend.
O Hertford, fitted or to shine in courts
With unaffected grace, or walk the plain
With innocence and meditation join'd
In soft assemblage, listen to my song,
Which thy own Season paints; when Nature all
Is blooming and benevolent, like thee.
And see where surly Winter passes off,
Far to the north, and calls his ruffian blasts:
His blasts obey, and quit the howling hill,
The shatter'd forest, and the ravaged vale;
While softer gales succeed, at whose kind touch,
Dissolving snows in livid torrents lost,
The mountains lift their green heads to the sky.
As yet the trembling year is unconfirm'd,
And Winter oft at eve resumes the breeze,
Chills the pale morn, and bids his driving sleets
Deform the day delightless: so that scarce
The bittern knows his time, with bill ingulf'd,
To shake the sounding marsh; or from the shore
The plovers when to scatter o'er the heath,
And sing their wild notes to the listening waste
At last from Aries rolls the bounteous sun,
And the bright Bull receives him. Then no more
The expansive atmosphere is cramp'd with cold
But, full of life and vivifying soul,
Lifts the light clouds sublime, and spreads then thin,
Fleecy, and white, o'er all-surrounding heaven.
Forth fly the tepid airs: and unconfined,
Unbinding earth, the moving softness strays.
Joyous, the impatient husbandman perceives
Relenting Nature, and his lusty steers
Drives from their stalls, to where the well used plough
Lies in the furrow, loosen'd from the frost.
There, unrefusing, to the harness'd yoke
They lend their shoulder, and begin their toil,
Cheer'd by the simple song and soaring lark.
Meanwhile incumbent o'er the shining share
The master leans, removes the obstructing clay,
Winds the whole work, and sidelong lays the glebe
While through the neighbouring fields the sowe stalks,
With measured step, and liberal throws the grain
Into the faithful bosom of the ground;
The harrow follows harsh, and shuts the scene.
Be gracious, Heaven! for now laborious Man
Has done his part. Ye fostering breezes, blow!
Ye softening dews, ye tender showers, descend!

David

My thought, on views of admiration hung,
Intently ravish'd and depriv'd of tongue,
Now darts a while on earth, a while in air,
Here mov'd with praise and mov'd with glory there;
The joys entrancing and the mute surprize
Half fix the blood, and dim the moist'ning eyes;
Pleasure and praise on one another break,
And Exclamation longs at heart to speak;
When thus my Genius, on the work design'd
Awaiting closely, guides the wand'ring mind.

If while thy thanks wou'd in thy lays be wrought,
A bright astonishment involve the thought,
If yet thy temper wou'd attempt to sing,
Another's quill shall imp thy feebler wing;
Behold the name of royal David near,
Behold his musick and his measures here,
Whose harp Devotion in a rapture strung,
And left no state of pious souls unsung.

Him to the wond'ring world but newly shewn,
Celestial poetry pronounc'd her own;
A thousand hopes, on clouds adorn'd with rays,
Bent down their little beauteous forms to gaze;
Fair-blooming Innocence with tender years,
And native Sweetness for the ravish'd ears,
Prepar'd to smile within his early song,
And brought their rivers, groves, and plains along;
Majestick Honour at the palace bred,
Enrob'd in white, embroider'd o'er with red,
Reach'd forth the scepter of her royal state,
His forehead touch'd, and bid his lays be great;
Undaunted Courage deck'd with manly charms,
With waving-azure plumes, and gilded arms,
Displaid the glories, and the toils of fight,
Demanded fame, and call'd him forth to write.
To perfect these the sacred spirit came,
By mild infusion of celestial flame,
And mov'd with dove-like candour in his breast,
And breath'd his graces over all the rest.
Ah! where the daring flights of men aspire
To match his numbers with an equal fire;
In vain they strive to make proud Babel rise,
And with an earth-born labour touch the skies.
While I the glitt'ring page resolve to view,
That will the subject of my lines renew;
The Laurel wreath, my fames imagin'd shade,
Around my beating temples fears to fade;
My fainting fancy trembles on the brink,
And David's God must help or else I sink.

The Artists

How gracefully, O man, with thy palm-bough,
Upon the waning century standest thou,
In proud and noble manhood's prime,
With unlocked senses, with a spirit freed,
Of firmness mild,--though silent, rich in deed,
The ripest son of Time,
Through meekness great, through precepts strong,
Through treasures rich, that time had long
Hid in thy bosom, and through reason free,--
Master of Nature, who thy fetters loves,
And who thy strength in thousand conflicts proves,
And from the desert soared in pride with thee!

Flushed with the glow of victory,
Never forget to prize the hand
That found the weeping orphan child
Deserted on life's barren strand,
And left a prey to hazard wild,--
That, ere thy spirit-honor saw the day,
Thy youthful heart watched over silently,
And from thy tender bosom turned away
Each thought that might have stained its purity;
That kind one ne'er forget who, as in sport,
Thy youth to noble aspirations trained,
And who to thee in easy riddles taught
The secret how each virtue might be gained;
Who, to receive him back more perfect still,
E'en into strangers' arms her favorite gave--
Oh, may'st thou never with degenerate will,
Humble thyself to be her abject slave!
In industry, the bee the palm may bear;
In skill, the worm a lesson may impart;
With spirits blest thy knowledge thou dost share,
But thou, O man, alone hast art!

Only through beauty's morning gate
Didst thou the land of knowledge find.
To merit a more glorious fate,
In graces trains itself the mind.
What thrilled thee through with trembling blessed,
When erst the Muses swept the chord,
That power created in thy breast,
Which to the mighty spirit soared.

When first was seen by doting reason's ken,
When many a thousand years had passed away,
A symbol of the fair and great e'en then,
Before the childlike mind uncovered lay.
Its blessed form bade us honor virtue's cause,--
The honest sense 'gainst vice put forth its powers,

I'd Like To Teach The World To Smoke

(parody of 'I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing')

I'd like to build the world an addiction
And furnish it with pain
Grow tobacco leaves and more tobacco leaves, people's got smoking on the brain
I'd like to teach the world to smoke
In perfect harmony
And grasp it slowly round the neck, laughing as it choked

I'd like to see the world for once
All addicts a gasping, choking mix
And hear them echo through the hills Oh, where's my latest fix

(That's the song I hear)
I'd like to teach the world to smoke (that the world sings today)
In perfect harmony

I'd like to teach the world to smoke
In perfect harmony

I'd like to build the world an addiction
And furnish it with pain
Grow tobacco leaves and more tobacco leaves, people's got smoking on the brain
I'd like to teach the world to smoke (that the world sings today)
In perfect harmony
I'd like to strangle it in my arms and make my company money
(That's the song I hear)
I'd like to see the world for once
All addicts a gasping, choking mix
And hear them echo through the hills Oh, where's my latest fix

(That's the song I hear)
I'd like to teach the world to smoke (that the world sings today)
In perfect harmony

PRELUDE

Daughter of Psyche, pledge of that last night
When, pierced with pain and bitter-sweet delight,
She knew her Love and saw her Lord depart,
Then breathed her wonder and her woe forlorn
Into a single cry, and thou wast born?
Thou flower of rapture and thou fruit of grief;
Invisible enchantress of the heart;
Mistress of charms that bring relief
To sorrow, and to joy impart
A heavenly tone that keeps it undefiled,--
Thou art the child
Of Amor, and by right divine
A throne of love is thine,
Thou flower-folded, golden-girdled, star-crowned Queen,
Whose bridal beauty mortal eyes have never seen!

II

Thou art the Angel of the pool that sleeps,
While peace and joy lie hidden in its deeps,
Waiting thy touch to make the waters roll
In healing murmurs round the weary soul.
Ah, when wilt thou draw near,
Thou messenger of mercy robed in song?
My lonely heart has listened for thee long;
And now I seem to hear
Across the crowded market-place of life,
Thy measured foot-fall, ringing light and clear
Above the unmeaning noises and the unruly strife;
In quiet cadence, sweet and slow,
Serenely pacing to and fro,
Thy far-off steps are magical and dear.
Ah, turn this way, come close and speak to me!
>From this dull bed of languor set my spirit free,
And bid me rise, and let me walk awhile with thee

III

Where wilt thou lead me first?
In what still region
Of thy domain,
Whose provinces are legion,
Wilt thou restore me to myself again,
And quench my heart's long thirst?

In The Month When Sings The Cuckoo

Hark! Spring is coming. Her herald sings,
Cuckoo!
The air resounds and the woodland rings,
Cuckoo! Cuckoo!
Leave the milking pail and the mantling cream,
And down by the meadow, and up by the stream,
Where movement is music and life a dream,
In the month when sings the cuckoo.

Away with old Winter's frowns and fears,
Cuckoo! Cuckoo!
Now May with a smile dries April's tears.
Cuckoo!
When the bees are humming in bloom and bud,
And the kine sit chewing the moist green cud,
Shall the snow not melt in a maiden's blood,
In the month when sings the cuckoo?

The popinjay mates and the lapwing woos;
Cuckoo!
In the lane is a footstep. I wonder whose?
Cuckoo! Cuckoo!
How sweet are low whispers! and sweet, so sweet,
When the warm hands touch and the shy lips meet,
And sorrel and woodruff are round our feet,
In the month when sings the cuckoo.

Your face is as fragrant as moist musk-rose;
Cuckoo! Cuckoo!
All the year in your cheek the windflower blows;
Cuckoo! Cuckoo!
You flit as blithely as bird on wing;
And when you answer, and when they sing,
I know not if they, or You, be Spring,
In the month when pairs the cuckoo.

Will you love me still when the blossom droops?
Cuckoo!
When the cracked husk falls and the fieldfare troops?
Cuckoo!
Let sere leaf or snowdrift shade your brow,
By the soul of the Spring, sweet-heart, I vow,
I will love you then as I love you now,
In the month when sings the cuckoo.

Smooth, smooth is the sward where the loosestrife grows,
Cuckoo! Cuckoo!
As we lie and hear in a dreamy doze,
Cuckoo! Cuckoo! Cuckoo!
And smooth is the curve of a maiden's cheek,

O Lord My God! - -Carl Boberg

O Lord my God!
When I in awesome wonder
consider all the worlds
Thy hands have made
I see the stars,
I hear the rolling thunder,
The power throughout the universe displayed

Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee;
How great Thou art, how great thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee,
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!

When through the woods and forest glades I wander
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees;
When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur
And hear the brook and feel the geltle breeze;

Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee;
How great Thou art, how great thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee,
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!

And when I think that God, His Son not sparing,
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in; -
That on the cross my burden gladly bearing,
He bled to take away my sin; -

Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee;
How great Thou art, how great thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee,
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!

When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart!
Then I shall bow in humble adoration
And there proclaim, My God, How great Thou art!

Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee;
How great Thou art, how great thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee,
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
