Retired and broke: Why retirees are declaring bankruptcy

For more and more seniors, retirement doesn’t mean a debt-free life of leisure. An increasing number of Americans aged 65 and older are declaring bankruptcy, according to a recent study by John Pottow, professor of law at the University of Michigan Law School.
Those aged 65 and older represented seven percent of bankruptcy filers in 2007, a mind-boggling jump from 1991. They are the “fastest-growing age demographic, ” according to Pottow’s study.
What’s the culprit for so much debt? Credit cards. Two-thirds of Americans who filed for bankruptcy said credit cards were the key reason for their financial problems, according to Pottow’s research. Besides having more credit card debt compared with younger bankruptcy filers,44.8 percent of those aged 65 and older also had more plastic in their wallets. “They’re using credit cards as a maladaptive coping mechanism, ” Pottow says.
Stephanie Osterland, a supervisor in the bankruptcy department at GreenPath debt solutions, sees an increasing number of seniors living beyond their means. Says Osterland: “They’re just trying to live off of a fixed income, and that’s usually Social Security. Maybe they have a small pension. We find they’ve used credit cards to supplement that income and expenses or they just end up getting into a lot of medical debt.”
In addition to escalating medical expenses, seniors have seen their portfolios hit hard by the lagging stock market. Carolyn Rodi of Saving Your American Dream says those considering bankruptcy should see a credit counselor at a non-profit organization to get their finances in order.
Credit counselors, such as those at GreenPath, help the elderly deal with a stressful situation. “We try to help them focus on what it’s going to look like” after they get out of debt, Osterland says.
Rodi also recommends that potential bankruptcy filers seek out pro-bono legal aid. “There are a lot of elderly people that are being taken advantage of by bankruptcy attorneys and mortgage brokers who are advising them improperly to pay for the bankruptcy, take out a reverse mortgage or to do things that aren’t in their best interest, ” she says. ”If you have no income, why should you borrow to pay someone when you can get free legal aid? ”
What are the chances of a senior paying off his or her debts? It’s difficult to determine, especially because seniors tend to be on a fixed income. And while finding a job — such as a WalMart greeter — seems like a viable option, it is not necessarily feasible for all seniors to work.
In addition, whether or not a person declares Chapter 7 (which involves the liquidation of one’s assets) or Chapter 13 (which allows debt restructuring) bankruptcy can be a significant factor in determining what one’s lifestyle will be. “If you have to file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, you may be able to find affordable housing that allows you to just get by, ” says Rodi. “Chapter 13 lets you keep your house and doesn’t touch your retirement savings.”
Regardless, filing for bankruptcy is very stressful for anyone. “A lot of our clients in that post-retirement age have a hard time coming to grips with their situation, ” Osterland says. “It’s very emotional for them. We try to focus on the future and see if this debt can be lifted off their shoulders.”

Ragging Menace

How can you ever rag a fresher, say,
When he or she is new to college, aye?
Each life is equally priceless today;
You don’t have right to talk, your hand to lay!

Yes, seniors rag when juniors in fear stay;
They do or say whatever: come what may;
For nasty things, they have a price to pay;
The age-old social evil stays this way!

But ragging is a menace and a crime;
It continues despite new laws with time;
The seniors want a jolly time and clime;
The silly habit is not worth a dime!

But seniors aren’t licensed to do such things;
Their words and actions at times simply stings;
They think freshers are servants; they are kings!
Yes, transient joys and thrills just ragging brings!

Who cares about the freshers’ temperaments?
They cannot keep their hair or wear garments;
They are victims of senior merriments;
Some lives end in gruesome experiments!

Yes, seniors want juniors to them respect;
Their ways are harsh and ill-feelings inject;
If guilty, college can them well eject;
But ragging is something all well reject!

The habit is an evil that must stop;
Arrests can be effected by a cop;
Punished are all from bottom to the top;
Yet, anti-ragging measures sometimes flop!

A change in attitude is needed fast;
The menace is much better than in past;
A mutual love and respect must well last;
Friendship will end this evil that’s aghast!

Dishonesty Is Given To Get And Taken

Too many are dishonest.

We Can Never Be For 'All' What God Is

Pray.
If you say you know God is there...
Why is it you accept conflict?
And dismiss He is everywhere.

Pray.
Everything God is,
Is within your reach.
God isn't secretive,
With deception to teach.

Listen.
God wants us to love.
Not stray and disobey.

And we've done so much of that.
Leaving us dissatisfied and dismayed.

We've made choices to look away.

Curb Your Inner Larry

When humor is combined with inconsideration,
as it so often is in “Curb
Enthusiasm, ” men are like a hostile nation,
Arabs versus Jews and Serb
against the Croat. If you’re trying to be funny,
suppress your cruel proclivity
to sound embittered. Sweeten words like honey
to show your sensitivity.
Ignore the fact that being rude is lots of fun. Your hon-
esty is not a Stradivari
which people might enjoy to hear you playing on,
so always curb your inner Larry.
Martin Miller writes about the reunion of Larry David with the cast o the Seinfelds on a forthcoming episode of “Curb Your Enthusiasm (LA Times, October 3,2009) : :
He knows he has issues. When asked about Dr. Phil's brief appearance on 'Curb's' second episode this season, he declares: 'I like him. I would definitely go to Dr. Phil if I could. You know what? I'm putting this out there right now that if he would take me, I'm going. Does he still have patients? I don't know if my problems are big enough for what he's used to.' A more immediate problem surfaces, and Dr. Phil is nowhere in sight. Larry spots something in his salad.”Is that a scallion? ' he frowns. 'I've got a date tonight.'

'This show is the only chance that I have to be honest about anything, ' Larry said. 'Your life generally is so dishonest. Your dealings with your fellow human beings are so dishonest, everything is so dishonest, to have this opportunity to be honest is very refreshing to me.' Recently, lobbyists for the pharmaceutical industry wrote a prescription drug bill that increased their profits and did nothing to help seniors. The result: seniors are stuck with a confusing prescription drug plan that does little to help them with their costs.

II ALUMNI MEET OF PMCians,2012 - A Gist

What seniors told their junior medicos:
The second Alumni meet at PMC
had drawn a sizable crowd of seniors;
Some came from ev'n abroad to take part in
the get-together arranged hurriedly.

They couldn't believe their eyes when they all met;
It was a dream come true for all of them;
It was the labour sheer of '06 batch;
Hats off to those who made the meet happen.

Thanks to the Dean, VP and medicos!
It was a pleasant meet with kith and kin;
It was all joy to meet colleagues that day;
It was a day of mixed emotions!

All shared some precious moments of their lives;
They owed their present status to teachers;
They were so proud of their Alma Mater;
They loved their college which made them doctors.

Recounting happy reminiscences,
The earliest students burnt the midnight oil;
It was worthwhile for they were settled now;
They shared truths of past mischief, valour, love!

Advising juniors, they just sang and danced;
They praised their life at PMC as ‘great'!
It was a family experience priceless;
It was something not found elsewhere till date!

It didn't matter if you sat in last bench;
It didn't matter if you faced enquires;
It didn't matter if you had failed sometimes;
To be a PMCian mattered much!

Success or failure lies in each one's hand;
Failures need not upset a medico;
‘A little ragging helped a lot in life'!
Hard-work and perseverance bore fruits sure.

Life was to live, enjoying each moment;
Life was to help and share with those in need;
Life was not pomp and show but facts thread-bare;
Life was not life where selfishness prevailed!

Today PMCians were doing fine!
They love the noble profession they chose;
Worrying can't solve all problems in one's life;
Each winter brings a spring verdure, lively!

Dear Candice,

If you can't sleep:

Make your bedroom more comfortable, keep it cool and quiet.

Get up and do something else. Then, go back to bed.

Take a warm bath, read a little or listen to some quiet music in the evening.

Get fresh air and exercise during the day, but remember: exercise before bed can keep you awake.

Go to bed and get up at the same time every day.

Don't take naps during the day.

Avoid coffee, tea or soft drinks after 5 p.m.
*
Don't smoke or drink alcohol in the evening—it can keep you awake.
*
Don't eat spicy food in the evening.

If you often wake up during the night to go to the bathroom and can't get back to sleep, try not to drink very much before you go to bed.

But remember: if you need to take medication at bedtime, it is best to take pills with a full glass of water.

If you feel lonely:

You can spend time with other people by:

* Becoming a volunteer at your local school, hospital, church or community centre.
* Joining a seniors' club at your local church or community centre.
* Taking a course at your local school or community centre and learning a new activity.

You can also call and talk to a different friend or family member every day. You may want to write a short letter to a friend or family member who lives far away. Sometimes, just writing to someone can help you feel that this person is with you.

If you feel anxious, tense or worried:

* Try to relax by breathing slowly and deeply.
* Take a walk.
* Choose an activity you really enjoy doing, like listening to your favourite music, and do it.
* Tell a friend, family member or your doctor how you feel.
* Join a support group so that you can talk more about your anxious feelings.
* Take a relaxation or exercise class, like yoga, at your local school or community centre.
* Take a course and learn how to do an activity, like needlework or woodworking, at your local community or seniors' centre.

Gone were the days

Gone were the days of high standard
National sentiments only to look forward
Not a word to be said in dishonor
It was love for motherland and called for

People Have Done This To Themselves

I miss sincerity.
And my friends and family members,
That shared theirs with me...
Who have moved on to other 'realms'.

I miss sincerity.
Too many today are so dishonest.
When someone opens their mouth,
My first reaction is to disbelieve.

People have done this to themselves.

Not to treasure one's integrity,
Is a sign an identity is lost.
And nothing is valued but delusion.

Is a quality of life lived not uplifted but diminished.
