The culture police, aka, the neo-McCarthyites, have erected new scapegoats by which they can censor or attack their enemies. Back in the 50s, if you were deemed to be a communist, your world would come crashing down, in both professional and personal matters. Today, if you have a relationship with any Russian, you might face the most negative repercussions for alleged treason. Worse yet, if you are deemed to be a racist, misogynist, or homophobe, your life will be destroyed instantly. Meanwhile, the Atheist war against the devoutly religious escalates, albeit with one exception: the Islamists are provided special exemption, thanks primarily to the massive, global, propaganda machine they erected, courtesy of the multi-billions at their disposal via the oil & gas revenues generated since formation of the OPEC cartel.
