Theme for World Lit

The instructor said,
Go home and write
A page tonight.
And let that page come out of you—
Then, it will be true.
Write about culture
She said
About heritage
About home
About you.

But who am I?
Is this where I'm supposed to figure it out?
What is my culture?

I am Africa
And oceans I've flown across
I am beaches I've walked on
Mountains I've climbed
And cultures I've spoken to
Then theirs became mine
I learned how to say "en cha Allah"
And "jambo"
And to see the simple things for their pleasures

I wear clothes made in China because virtually everything is
Is that American?
I laugh with my friends like all teenagers do
No matter where in the world they come from
I speak Colorado
We don't have an accent
I read
Because it's intoxicating
I eat French fries, Chinese food, Mexican and Italian
I guess because it's American

I'm lucky enough to live near the mountains
I'm lucky enough

I'm from America or Ireland or France
Or that's what Dad says
I've never been there

My culture is a smoothie
Everything I am turned on high and served in a chilled glass on a beach somewhere
With a little paper umbrella and a straw

This page is mine.
I let it come out of me
Is it true?
