Police, Fire & EMT

It's another New York City morning early in the day,
Peace is solemnly interrupted as panic breaks away,
Not once but twice, two planes level the Twin Towers,
Years planning & building destroyed in less than an hour.

It takes heart to swim in the Big Apple's deep waters,
Fathers, mothers, husbands, wives, sons and daughters,
Most ran away before, definitely after the explosion & fire,
Not the Dedicated Public Servants, faithfully climbing higher.

However many years earlier the Police, Fire, EMT exam,
A pledge to serve on the job doing the very best they can,
Looking forward to retirement after their years on the job
No one thought about 9/11, retirement days being robbed.

I overheard a hero's nothing but a sandwich on day old bread,
Tell that to the survivors better known now as the walking dead,
A sworn oath under all circumstances to give nothing but the best,
Rising to the occasion New York's Finest proudly passed the test

There are many things that one can be dedicated to in this world,
Like Jeff saying yes to be godfather of Deanna, a precious little girl,
He knew deep in his heart without a doubt this was the right thing,
The joy received from the smile on her face is impossible to explain.

What do you do when a job picked has various sacrifices & demands?
Become thorough via proficiency in order to do the very best you can,
Not until the end of your watch do you relax and enjoy a safe landing,
Although on the job 24/7 will sometimes put a dent in off duty planning.

It's imperative at this point we'd like to inject another very important thing,
Not all police officers are like those who beat a handcuffed Rodney King,
There is a stress factor that goes with being on the front line of defense,
Be careful when you try to judge those in uniform using common sense.

There's a rule of thumb in police work, safety first & safety last,
For without a doubt, in the line of duty, many will untimely pass,
By and through the diligence of practiced procedural techniques,
So law enforcement survives chaos encountered on city streets.

Security guards do not experience rigorous training cops will obtain,
From Police Academy class rooms to traffic stops to the firing range,
Likewise EMS & Firefighters who are required by law to yearly update,
Attending seminars, advanced education, policies, before it is too late.

Scary to be a guardian over someone or something you never knew,
Without knowing in advance whether or not their heart is really true,
It's a tough job not able to make a judgment of what you initially see,
Especially Heroes on the battle field of chaos like Police, Fire & EMT.
