Flies and Humans

I sat in my bedroom
watching as two flies
repeatedly flung themselves
at the window
trying to get outside.
Of course
they do not understand
the concept of glass.
They keep trying
and I keep watching.
Then I thought,
maybe they are safer in here
behind these walls.
Yes, they are.
I resigned myself
from this contemplation
and decided
to let them stay.
Then another part of me emerged
and thought:
This fly is going to
die eventually
in fact, very soon.
I think it
would rather die
flying limitlessly
through fresh air
into the sun
into the wind
out of here.
And although
its existence
is futile
it will die
doing exactly
what it should be
in exactly
the right place.
So I open the window
and they fly out to freedom,
to die.
And then I sat realizing
Those flies are a lot like us humans
only they have the courage
and the drive
to fly.
We just keep
flinging ourselves
at the window
even though
we know exactly
how to open it.
