Fear and Desire

The smiling face of Fear looks
And peers upon me.
He tells me of his sister
Desire, where she lives.

His friendly glare is harsher
When he speaks of her.
He does not want me to search,
For I may find her.

It seems Fear is protective,
Trying to preserve
Her safety and her presence,
But I wish no harm.

I only seek her for knowledge,
Her gentle wisdom.
I only pine to know her ways,
Her soft, loving ways.

Fear challenges my motives,
Suspecting ill will
From my better intentions.
I remain quiet.

I do not utter a word.
Fear readily twists
The connotations of them,
So I keep silent.

Fear would like to pull my tongue
From my mouth, dripping
Small puddles of the language
I would like to say.

He senses evil inside
My voiceless larynx.
He waits for the verbiage;
To manipulate.

Fear would rather define me
In his sly approach—
Misguide me with misfortune—
To hide his sister.

I can wait through his mind games
To find happiness.
Some day soon, he will submit:
Fear is impatient.

I stare through him until then,
Looking to Desire.
Like her brother, Fear, she smiles,
Peering upon me.
