City in Heat
City in Heat
[3: 00 am]
screaming cat
in heat,
begging
for a fk
[3: 15 am]
goddmn
car alarm siren
wails loudly,
non-stop
Furious,
I pound
on the
neighbors
screen door...
'what the
hell do u
want! ' a
voice yells
in the
darkness,
through the
dirty, rusted
screen
'Turn off
your fkin'
car alarm! '
I yell back-
turn and
walk away
fighting
across the
street.
at an all-night
house party.
sirens screaming,
red lights
glow
through
my drawn
drapes
stagnant
sweltering
heat
has no
forgiveness/
it's unforgiving
summer-sweat
is
my lover
tonight
tryin' to
keep me clam
It's
saltiness
finds it's way
between my lips
and onto my
tongue
Sitting
on the sofa,
wet...
I run my fingers
through
damp, oily
hair
Old Gold
smoke
exhausts
out of
my mouth.
Another
swig of rum
[exhale]
Gut clenched.
Another draw
from my
smoke.
Millions
of people
know my
world.
they tolerate
it,
like they
tolerate a
paper cut
or
sipping on
coffee that's
too hot
the rules are
simple
survive
the rules are
simple
survive
my sweat.
my angst.
their sweat.
their angst
millions
of people
know my
world
Everyone…
Everything…
tr apped
Except the
butterfly....
caterpillars
may be slow
people are
slower.
