Open and Empty
his battle scars remain
symbols of beauty
smiles to shield
his tears like a sword
soft his eyes in reflecting
those final moments of innocence
beloved sister slain in battle
hidden voices tremor in his blood
mirror spectator judging himself
assumed guilty by association
collateral damage memories of crime
demons lurk in darkened subconscious
corners of the mind
anonymous attackers
faceless assassins
penetrate deep into his psyche
his strength swift in refusing to pull the plug
holds his breath
body absorbing blow after blow
bones broken by savage stones
falling face first upon dust and dirt
his fist clenches an invincible inner reserve
in mourning of a love once lost
his heart now a locket
open and empty
