New Year,2010 – Boon or Bane?

And when the clock strikes twelve midnight,
The Old year makes o’er for the New,
Heralded by much revelry,
Fire-works, sound and light with dance,
And music of great decibels,
That fills the air of cities, towns,
Where exotic foods, wine are served!

Most people are in festive mood,
As roads are thronged by surging crowds
Of merry-making, young and old,
Who embellish the change in time
That history makes throughout the world,
Forgetting all the past year’s woes,
Enjoying ecstasied moments!

But these are fleeting hours of life
Replaced by stark realities,
That wakes up persons from their ‘dreams’,
And puts them back upon the lanes
Of darkness, drudgery and grief,
Reminding transience of life
On earth as if it was worthless!

And things are same for poor brethren,
As richer nations waste huge sums,
In pomp and show and wars futile,
To worsen plight of poorer ones
And do a name-sake charity
To show the world, they care for all –
An act of trickery so fine!

Is the New Year then a boon or bane?
Let leaders question their own hearts
And feel remorse for foolish acts,
And past decisions taken wrong,
That made the air and water foul,
And resources scarcer with time,
And living, miserable for all.

Will New Year give a better deal
For children, women, challenged souls –
Who find the world unfair, cruel,
Who plead to God for better days,
Who bear the ignominy deep,
Who live their lives like dumb, maimed beasts,
Hoping the morrow brings reprieve?

Let New Year make people rethink
On how to make the world better
For mankind all, and progeny,
By spreading peace and harmony,
Through dialogues amidst nations,
Averting holocausts and wars,
Those steal lives and commodities!

Let New Year instill hope in all –
Who toil but earn a pittance just,
Who run from pillar to new posts,
Who cannot get a meal a day,
Who are half-clothed and without roof,
Who fall in debt-traps, so ruthless,
Who wonder if God does exist?

Let New Year make all righteous,
And fill all minds with fortitude,
And fill hearts with love for neighbors,
Elderly and even strangers;
And prove the fact that God is one,
Who is pro-life and cares for all,
Especially the womb’s unborn!

Let New Year bring blessings from God;
Let wisdom rule all human acts;
Let heinous crimes be things of past;
Let terrorists be stifled soon;
Let nukes be dismantled off fast;
Let marriage, sex remain sacred;
Let dignity of life be prime!

Is the New Year boon or bane, now ask?
Is world now better place to live?
Is lasting peace now felt by all?
Is brotherhood of nations true?
Is love the balm that soothes people?
Is earthly life now worth living?
Is earth a real paradise?

Let Twenty Ten be the New Year
That brings all souls nearer to God,
And earth’s sky closer to Heaven,
And earth-filled people who rejoice,
Regretting not for being born,
But praising God for being made
‘Homo sapiens, ’ man or woman!

‘Happy New Year,2010 to all! ’
