The Last Night Of The Show

The Easter Show is a big event
With people from the country
And cows and horses, goats and sheep
Fruit and vegetables and music and people
Not like in the country.

A lonely place the country
So the Show marks out the year
The kids sleep out
They flirt and shout
And maybe sometimes go one step too far
Maybe a drink or two too many.

That night there was an argument
That last night of the Show
Maybe it was about boyfriends
I can’t guess ‘cos I don’t know
Cherie punched out a friend of hers
As a big crowd gathered round
And then she hit a copper
And knocked him to the ground
The cops then took her straight away
As the crowd looked on this scene
She was crying and she was battered
And she was just sixteen.

She woke in a cell the next day
Not knowing where to go
For all those country people
Had moved on after the Show.
