A Australian Rose

For Betty Backhouse
Where ever you may be.

Way back in 1959
my parents, my sister and I.
Sailed from New York harbour
passed the Statue of Liberty
on an ocean liner called the RML Ivernia.
It was on this liner I met a girl slightly older than me,
who completely captivated me.
She was travelling with her parents and her brother.
They were from Australia
and her name was Betty.
She reminded me so much of my Canadian rose,
and the resemblance was uncanny.
The trip to England took seven nights and seven days.
Within those days,
she swept my heart completely away.
My biggest regret now is
I forgot to ask them where they lived in Australia.

Iron Ore Betty

Im going steady with iron ore betty
And shes goin steady with me
We receive our mail in the same mailbox
And we watch the same tv
I got rug burns on my elbows
Shes got em on her knees
Yeah, Im goin steady with iron ore betty
And shes going steady with me.
Hey, I been pickin my brains out
I been workin at the hardware store
I been trying to put a chicken in the window
Chase away the wolf from the door
Bettys been down in the iron ore mine
Bringing home energy
Yeah, Im goin steady with iron ore betty
And shes goin steady with me.
I been speaking to her in english
Shes been speakin in the english too
We always speak the same language
cause were always gettin thru

Joe Knows How To Live

Blue monday morning at the factory gate
Almost time to clock in
The boys were bettin'
That Joe wouldn't show
Cause they had seen him over the weekend
He had four new tire on his old cadillac
Betty the waitress and some clothes in the back
A dashboard full of roadmaps of Mexico
Yeah, Joe knows how to live
He said, "Women were made to love,
Money is made to spend,
Life is something, buddy,
You will never live again"
Yeah, you've got to admit it
Joe's knows how to live
And now they'll be down at the ocean
He and Betty stretched out somewhere
The only blue in his life
Is the blue moonlight
Bouncin' off Betty's blonde hair

Betty Breaks Football Fans Hearts

It was love at first sight
a match made in heaven
I couldn't have been happier
had my team scored seven.
I was at an away match
enjoying a half-time pie
when I heard singing
that brought a tear to my eye.
There was this beautiful woman
wearing the colours of my team
she was singing my favourite song
surely I thought this must be a dream?
But no this was really happening
and she was standing next to me
then all of sudden she stopped
and said 'Hello my name is Betty.'
Her voice had melted my heart
and my life changed that day
we pledged we'd be together forever
and never miss a game home or away.

A Lasting Friendship

For Betty Burton
A friend for over thirty years.

It is funny just how time slips away.
It only seems like yesterday
when the two of us met,
long, long ago in 1976.
It was in September of that year
a friend persuaded me
to go along to a writing class
to help boost up the numbers
and my moral.
With just four pupils
and five when I came along,
so a small intimate group
all with the desire to write,
but Betty became
the most famous of us all
with over thirteen

The Old Days - And The New

‘Mid wattle scents and sounds of Spring,
The old man, dreaming in his chair,
Is back where skylarks soar and sing
In sunshine, o’er the hills of Clare.
And since all Irishmen have been,
True lovers, since the world began,
A flush still tints his withered cheek
At thoughts of Bessie Quinlevan.

‘Ah Danny, lad, she was the girl,
So fine and straight in all her ways,
The price of every dance and fair,
There’s no such women nowadays!”
Young Danny, plaiting stockwhip thongs,
Smiles o’er his grandsire’s lock of grey,
Rememb’ring with a lovers pride,
The wild-rise grace of Betty Shea.

The old man in his dreams pursues,
Through hurling fields the flying ball,

Outside the Cinema.

After tea
you went out

into the summer evening
without cowboy hat

or rifle
but your six shooter

tucked in the belt
of your jeans

to meet Helen
under the railway bridge

next to the Duke of Wellington
public house

I thought you weren't coming
Helen said

Betty's Date.

Betty sips her drink and crosses
her legs and wonders if Chowbrew

will ever come as he said he would
and as she has been waiting for

over an hour she thinks he's not
coming, thinks he's gone off with

another. She sighs. All that time getting
ready, putting on the new dress,

making sure she'd put on fresh
underwear, showered, washed

her hair, filed her nails and still
he hasn't come. Betty, her mother

used to say, men are like buses,
if one doesn't turn up another'll soon

Helen and You and a Bag of Chips

After school
after tea
of bread and jam
a mug of tea

and a slice of cake
you met Helen
under the railway bridge
in Rockingham Street

and she was holding
Battered Betty her doll
in her arms
and she said

Betty wanted to come
she gets lonely
stuck at home
ok

You've Got Magic!

'America - You've Got Magic! '
Ran the sign on the Glitzy Floor,
For this was the latest Reality Show
To consume consumers with awe;
Some Boffin, deep in a Think-Tank
Had been racking his brain for weeks,
And this was the format he gave them;
Home Magicians! - with tricks and treats!

The Show was into the knockout stage,
The Advertisers were rapt,
None of your Song and Dancing here,
Nobody shedding Fat,
No-one stuck in a boring House
With brains the size of a pea,
But plenty of age-old magic tricks
For the rest of the world to see.

The Judges sat in their glory
Each equipped with a magic wand,
