Bird Watcher

In Wall Street once a potent power,
And now a multi-millionaire
Alone within a shady bower
In clothes his valet would not wear,
He watches bird wings bright the air.

The man who mighty mergers planned,
And oil and coal kinglike controlled,
With field-glasses in failing hand
Spies downy nestlings five days old,
With joy he could not buy for gold.

Aye, even childlike is his glee;
But how he crisps with hate and dread
And shakes a clawlike fist to see
A kestrel hover overhead:
Though he would never shoot it dead.

Although his cook afar doth forage
For food to woo his appetite,

Tumbleweed Chalet.

There it was
A parafin coloured shack
All locked up and black.
Hidden amongst the trees.
A sort of don`t you see me.
But the river gave it
A mild reflection
And the fishermen
Were half-dozing
In the midday sun.
It`s the son of
Tumbleweed chalet.
Just like the old days.
I dreamt i was
A cowboy
Leaning on it`s broadwalk
Further on i went
Into the weeds.
Half a dozen ghost towns`
Strangled and forgotten please.

Perfect Gentleman

my finest coat flung over puddles
innate instinctual offerings

all without blinking
slightest of thinking

to spare you such unseemlies

guarding your delicate
diamonds of dignity

valiant umbrella valet ballet
escorted doors opening
with careful chair pulled seating
attentive tailored table dining

considerate discretion
not to mention
timeless chivalrous courtesies

A dona Rosita Rosa

I
Ce petit bonhomme bleu
Qu'un souffle apporte et remporte,
Qui, dès que tu dors un peu,
Gratte de l'ongle à ta porte,

C'est mon rêve. Plein d'effroi,
Jusqu'à ton seuil il se glisse.
Il voudrait entrer chez toi
En qualité de caprice.

Si tu désires avoir
Un caprice aimable, leste,
Et prenant un air céleste
Sous les étoiles du soir,

Mon rêve, ô belle des belles,
Te convient ; arrangeons-nous.
Il a ton nom sur ses ailes
Et mon nom sur ses genoux.

Notes On A Billboard

The billboards are atwitter,
Shaking in the wind
As if they had Parkinson's—
Colorful pictures placate
Passing drivers, comfortable
In their leather, reclining seats
To God knows where—
Who knows where God is?
He's advertised right there,
Up in the sky
Above a church
With valet parking and high-definition
Televisions side-scrolling Biblical slogans:
What would Jesus do?
Come and find out, we'll tell you
(Because a dead man can't
And you can't tell yourself
The billboards glitter
Like the sea-washed, sand-polished
Treasures that erode over time—

Cupid and Plutus

When Celia, love's eternal foe,
To rich old Gomez first was married;
And angry Cupid came to know
His shafts had err'd, his bow miscarried;

He sigh'd, he wept, he hung his head,
On the cold ground, full sad, he laid him;
When Plutus, there by fortune led,
In this desponding plight survey'd him.

'And sure,' he cried, 'you'll own at last
Your boasted power by mine exceeded:
Say, wretched boy, now all is past,
How little she your efforts heeded.

'If with success you would assail,
Gild, youngster, doubly gild your arrows:
Little the feather'd shafts avail,
Though wing'd from mamma's doves and sparrows.

Infelice

Walking swiftly with a dreadful duchess,
He smiled too briefly, his face was pale as sand,
He jumped into a taxi when he saw me coming,
Leaving my alone with a private meaning,
He loves me so much, my heart is singing.
Later at the Club when I rang him in the evening
They said: Sir Rat is dining, is dining, is dining,
No madam, he left no messafe, ah how his silence speaks,
He loves me too much for words, my heart is singing.
The Pullman seats are here, the tickets for Paris, I am waiting,
Presently the telephone rings, it is his valet speaking,
Sir Rat is called away, to Scotland, his constituents,
(Ah the dreadful duchess, but he loves me best)
Best pleasure to the last, my heart is singing,
One night he came, it was four in the morning,
Walking slowly upstairs, he stands beside my bed,
Dear darling, lie beside me, it is too cold to stand speaking,
He lies down beside me, his face is like the sand,
He is in a sleep of love, my heart is singing.
Sleeping softly softly, in the morning I must wake him,

A Chantey of Labor's Lost

There on the quay sobbed Bones, A.B.,
And he took me by the hand.
Says he to me, 'I've quit the sea
An' I'm huntin' a berth on land.
‘Er doom ‘as come; an' the days o' rum,
Salt-‘orse an' tar is over;
For these is the days of the popinjays
An' the end of the deep-sea rover
Oh,
Them tough ole, rough ole, rollicking lads
The shell-back, deep-sea rover.

'They've finished with me,' says Bones, A.B.,
'For they've finished with seamanship.
What they're shippin' of late is a milliner's mate
With a housemaid's mop on the ‘ip.
But ask ‘im the rig of a barque or a brig,
Or the toons of the chanteys sung
By a buck he-male in the days of sail
When me an' me mates was young

Past Is Forgotten

'Do you remember that feared gentleman'?
My friend rushed early in the morning with bad Oman
Faces with horrific feelings and great concern
'What is wrong but? 'Now it was my turn

Do you remember that dreaded person? He spoke with one voice
Whose presence was felt formidable with reasons?
Yes, yes, but what has it to do with your worry and fear?
'He is no more now and city may have calm and peace now dear'

I could now understand about his anxiety
The dead person was known for his notoriety
In his young days he had spread terror
Earned bad repute and there was no word in his dictionary like honor

For creation of any disturbance you can take his help
For any unlawful activities you can count on him and bet
Yet he was kind at heart and helped poor and destitute
He had kindness to his heart and always tried to contribute
