Les Victimes

For those who died
The Gulf Coast - 29 August 2005

Spare me, Oh Death
I, who love this wretched life!
Deliver me from thy breadth:
Your predestinate scythe.

Let not the waters come to be my grave:
A transient existence for a wandering soul,
Who cherished more than life ever gave.

Merely a mortal that the heavens cannot seem to extol,
I lie in wait, bargaining for my lifetime,
Bound and broken and cold.

Is there no one who can set aside the mockingly sublime?
Shall the innocent endure here?
Will the choice, ever again, be mine?

Spare me, Oh Death
I, who refuse to be led:
I beg of thee, let this not be my final breath!
Or…shall I succumb to you instead?
