True Prayer In Worship
I have prayed to Allah,
but not in ritual,
bending knee five times a day.
In Istanbul,
I learned,
from a Greek Christian...
that a Christian
can pray in centuries
old Islamic mosque
God is also there
God in divinity said
‘I am everywhere’...
Out of respect
we did not pray
in call to prayer time
we prayed in quiet time
between call to prayer
in message of peace Allah is there
we prayed in cities heart
heart of classical Greek origins
in stone masonry built mosque
How I loved space
between ancient mosques
during time of call to prayer
human voice
echoing forth
centuries old chant
human voice
raised up in worship
is exhilarating
pull upon heart
tribute to God
practiced in many lands
be the call
