The House Of Dust: Complete

I.

The sun goes down in a cold pale flare of light.
The trees grow dark: the shadows lean to the east:
And lights wink out through the windows, one by one.
A clamor of frosty sirens mourns at the night.
Pale slate-grey clouds whirl up from the sunken sun.

And the wandering one, the inquisitive dreamer of dreams,
The eternal asker of answers, stands in the street,
And lifts his palms for the first cold ghost of rain.
The purple lights leap down the hill before him.
The gorgeous night has begun again.

'I will ask them all, I will ask them all their dreams,
I will hold my light above them and seek their faces.
I will hear them whisper, invisible in their veins . . .'
The eternal asker of answers becomes as the darkness,
Or as a wind blown over a myriad forest,
Or as the numberless voices of long-drawn rains.

Montreal Maree

You've heard of Belching Billy, likewise known as Windy Bill,
As punk a chunk of Yukon scum as ever robbed a sluice;
A satellite of Soapy Smith, a capper and a shill,
A slimy tribute-taker from the Ladies on the Loose.
But say, you never heard of how he aimed my gore to spill
(That big gorilla gunnin' for a little guy like me,)
A-howlin' like a malamute an' ravin' he would drill
Me full of holes and all because of Montreal Maree.

Now Spike Mahoney's Bar was stiff with roarin' drunks,
And I was driftin' lonesome-like, scarce knowin' what to do,
So come I joined a poker game and dropped a hundred plunks,
And bein' broke I begged of Spike to take my I.O.U.
Says he: "Me lad, I'll help ye out, but let me make this clear:
If you you don't pay by New year's day your wage I'll garnishee."
So I was broodin' when I heard a whisper in my ear:
"What ees zee trouble, leetle boy?" said Montreal Maree.

Now dance-hall gels is good and bad, but most is in between;
Yeh, some is scum and some is dumb, and some is just plumb cold;

Elysium

Elysium
Elysium, is everyone chipping at your cordiality?
Elysium, you stand ice-bound to the windy casualty
Elysium, is everyone nagging at your reason to believe?
Elysium, you stare down from a mound with such hostility
You said to me now wipe you eyes
Relax your hand and come inside
Lift back your head and swallow your pride
Don't be ashamed in me confide
I've seen you pretend
The happy go lucky
Everything's funky
But in the end
Your manic obsession
Turns to depression
Elysium, is everyone chipping at your cordiality?
Elysium, you stand ice-bound to the windy casualty
Stand back and watch the bright spark fly
To catch a glimpse, don't blink an eye
The touch paper wrapped round your soul

Matthew

Had an uncle named matthew
Was his fathers only boy
Born just south of colby, kansas
Was his mothers pride and joy
Yes, and joy was just the thing that he was raised on
Love was just the way to live and die
Gold was just a windy kansas wheatfield
Blue, just a kansas summer sky
All the stories that he told me
Back when I was just a lad
All the memories that he gave me
All the good times that he had
Growin up a kansas farmboy
Life was mostly havin fun
Ridin on his daddys shoulders
Behind a view beneath the sun
Yes, and joy was just the thing that he was raised on
Love was just the way to live and die
Gold was just a windy kansas wheatfield
Blue is just a kansas summer sky

Who has seen the wind

Who has seen the wind?
Neither you nor i.
But we can feel the windy breeze.
As it hits between our knees.
Who has seen the wind?
Neither i nor you.
But we can feel the windy air.
As it hits and gives a flare.
Who has seen the wind?
Neither i nor you.Neither you, nor i.
But we can still appreciate it, just as easily as we can hate it!
Who has heard the wind?
Neither you nor I.
But when we feel a windy breeze,
the wind is passing by.
Who has heard the wind?
neither I nor you.
But, as you feel the windy air,
you know that the wind is there.

Britains Storm

O! Britain is battered
With windy rainy tatters
The Storm has arrived
Its morning and just after five

O! Dear, Helter- skelter, Helter-Skelter
Here and there, they run for shelter
From a series of windy belters
Walking backwards is not healthier

With winds of 80 miles per hour
Florists hide displays of flowers
Homes and caravans are evacuated
And peoples moods are de-motivated

O! Britain is battered
With windy rainy tatters
The Storm has arrived
Its morning and just after five

I Opened The Casements Of My House

I opened the casements of my house
Onto the wild, wild sea
The billows were on it austere and free
The sea-wind with every house-corner neighed
And with the bending palms in the garden played
At dice or in the games of life at will
And still the casements opened and opened
As if by magic trance or guided else
By a thousand small invisible goblin-hands
That from the sea-main seemed to fly and come
Over the billows austere and free
As the sea-wind with every house-corner neighed
And with the bending palms in the garden played
Beyond, beyond the vista low and large
A plain of beach sand lapped by the waves
And here and there an oasis of sweet palms
That bent their olive heads in the winds’ waffling
And coming and going over the sea.
Where the white billows raged saliva-like
Or like bent god-thrones cool and flexible

The Ballad Of The Black Fox Skin

I

There was Claw-fingered Kitty and Windy Ike living the life of shame,
When unto them in the Long, Long Night came the man-who-had-no-name;
Bearing his prize of a black fox pelt, out of the Wild he came.

His cheeks were blanched as the flume-head foam when the brown spring freshets flow;
Deep in their dark, sin-calcined pits were his sombre eyes aglow;
They knew him far for the fitful man who spat forth blood on the snow.

"Did ever you see such a skin?" quoth he; "there's nought in the world so fine--
Such fullness of fur as black as the night, such lustre, such size, such shine;
It's life to a one-lunged man like me; it's London, it's women, it's wine.

"The Moose-hides called it the devil-fox, and swore that no man could kill;
That he who hunted it, soon or late, must surely suffer some ill;
But I laughed at them and their old squaw-tales. Ha! Ha! I'm laughing still.

"For look ye, the skin--it's as smooth as sin, and black as the core of the Pit.
By gun or by trap, whatever the hap, I swore I would capture it;

Windy Town

Theres gotta be something more to this life were given
Gotta be peace o mind and a piece o living
When the losers have won
And the damage is done
Only then will you be saved.
She dancing on thin ice while her mind is skating
Hes building on the dust that is suffocating
And a baby that cries
In a city of lies
For a freedom that is craved
And high will you fly tonight
In dreams you can hold this tight
But when will love blow round
When will love blow through windy town.
Sunny had a street that she couldnt live in
Sunny had a room that she couldnt breath in
But a heart that could feel
And a hand that could heal
And a passion filled with rage.
I never felt the air with a wind of change

Windy Town

Driving home from the highland line
We done some gigs on the clyde and the tyne
They flew us in from a hamburg strip
The taste of dusseldorf still on our lips
And on the bus there is a friend of mine
We go way back to the scene of the crime
We sit up front and share a cigarette
And try to remember what we tried to forget
He say do you remember?
He say do you recall?
I say yeah I remember, oh, I remember it all
Every time that cold wind blows
Every time I hear that sound
Late night trains shunting down by the river
I remember windy town
We come so far and we move so fast
Making hay see it all go past
Round the world and round again
Up and down on that gravy train
But every time that cold wind blows
