Quotes about similitude

Walt Whitman

On The Beach At Night, Alone

ON the beach at night alone,
As the old mother sways her to and fro, singing her husky song,
As I watch the bright stars shining--I think a thought of the clef of
the universes, and of the future.

A VAST SIMILITUDE interlocks all,
All spheres, grown, ungrown, small, large, suns, moons, planets,
comets, asteroids,
All the substances of the same, and all that is spiritual upon the
same,
All distances of place, however wide,
All distances of time--all inanimate forms,
All Souls--all living bodies, though they be ever so different, or in
different worlds,
All gaseous, watery, vegetable, mineral processes--the fishes, the
brutes, 10
All men and women--me also;
All nations, colors, barbarisms, civilizations, languages;
All identities that have existed, or may exist, on this globe, or any
globe;

Similitude

Similitude,
Exclusive,
Subjective;
The expanse of the sky covers your love,
So come and wash your feet under this great tree.

The difficulty of writing a good theatre play set in new reality was even greater given that the level of similitude to life that is allowed in a film would not work on the stage.

Christ made the bread the sacrament of his body only: wherefore as the bread is no similitude of his blood, so am I not bound or ought to affirm, that his blood is there present.

Stone bound, I was a refugee
immersed in a starlight
that washed through me
spellbound stillness
imagination reeling
heart on its knees
in humble praise
immersed naked
in similitude
sanctified
sprinkled
baptized
a child
a man
I am

Symmetry

There was so much symmetry
In the cemetary it just made you want to stay
As if planted in cement
the similitude was not in headstones
though order ruled there too
No it was the solitude...the silence
As if humans were really made for this
No crush of useless voices
No sniping...or complaints
No crying or ornate crooning
or baying at the moon
Just that blessed stillness
Mocking seminary thoughts
Maybe all this cemetery symmetry is heaven after all

A Wine Quiesced

You…the lipstick
on my glass...
‘O bottomless eyes
drink to me only
breathe me, yes
sip my wine….

why the pause…
what left those
wet dark eyes
why withdraw into
that safe shadowed shell
your riddled worlds
of secrecy… veiled
un-promised
yet ever inviting

a tentative swirl
my wine
lowered

Green Clouds # 4

Where the green clouds gathered to rend,
the storm has passed with its colored raindrops
There are no more wondering sensations of spring
And youth is spent against the shore of similitude

There was no sudden cease of wind and war
only the slow dying of battle with the night
Now it is easy to flounder in the shadows
without the boon or delight of my troubles

The shock and words were once poetry most high
It is easy to forget that I was still human then
Eager for the storm again, I must run quickly
to catch what I seek, or forever chase the wind.
