Idaho Dawn/ The Death of Ernest Hemingway

On that quiet dawn in Idaho
did you remember Montparnasse,
the cheery banter at the Dome,
good bread smells, spattering
chestnut husks and orange peel
on a garret fire in winter?

Did you see Gertrude’s peasant face
amid young Picasso’s glory,
embrace the barnacled Irishman,
scold the prince of bottled dreams,
weep for the mentor in his cage,
and rejoice in geniuses together?

Did you watch Joselito strut again
in the bloody sand at Cordoba,
savouring the triumph and the lust,
and run the glorious Gulf Stream,
crying hallelujah to the ocean kings,
drift free at dusk from Harry’s Bar?

Dumb Swede

With barbwire hooch they filled him full,
Till he was drunker than all hell,
And then they peddled him the bull
About a claim they had to sell.
A thousand bucks they made him pay,
Knowing that he had nothing more,
And when he begged it back next day,
And wept! - they kicked him from the door.

They reckoned they were mighty slick,
Them two tinhorns from Idaho;
That poor dumb Swede could swing a pick,
but that was all he'd ever know.
So sitting in a poker game,
They lost the price for which they sold
To that bonehead a poor dud claim
That didn't have a speck of gold.

My story's true as gospel creed
Of these bright boys from Idaho;

Battling Racism

I have wanted to tell my story of Sgt. Vigay.
When we first met, him claiming cool,
and get's Hell out's -is way.
I never felt such hatred, prejudice, like that first day.
That was my first moments, But I swore, I'd make him pay.

It started, claiming he'd whip's my body,
Like's moppen's the hall.
He'd whip's this I'd'ho white boy, in Bassit Ball
There he stood, six three or four, big and frighting.
But I mouthed, moe foe, have you ever seen?
I'd'ho white greased lighting?

The hurts and the banging, I knew what I'd get.
All the money I had, but what the Heck?
I placed life, death, on that six dollor bet.
Battling racisim, I bet they're still wondering even yet?

The brothers all cheered, for their man six feet four.

1 he apples hung until a wind at the equinox,

That heaped the beach with black weed, filled the dry grass

Under the old trees with rosy fruit.

In the morning Fayne Fraser gathered the sound ones into a

As I travel around Idaho and visit with seniors, I hear almost universal concern about the rising cost of health care, particularly the cost of prescription drugs.
