What Bells & Sex Have To Do With Each Other, A Mythic Rendering From Ancient Texts & Dreams, circa 1981

'The bells, I say, the bells outbreak their towers...
- Hart Crane, from 'The Broken Tower'

For Marianne Annur

...I will tell you of Fatima.

She is the bell,
The tintinabulum,
The veil and the will.

Then take me to her.
You can have the tapestry of streets,
The bowls of tint.

Shade the surface black
And she will emerge
The river,

Fatima's Hand

Fatima is 21
And around here - when your 21
u gotta start thinking about getting a man
getting a son - getting it done
just like her mom when she was 21
but even though Fatima's not ready for it
she not gonna say some
she feels she gotta do this for the parents
cuz they've been on her for the last 5 years
a lotta men from motherland
came up here hoping she say yeah
but she ain't down
wants somebody that can make her feel alive
chill every time she wanna cry
the one in a million type of guy
but her mom keeps telling her
"compromise, this ain't no fairy tale my child
do not waste your time
u'll regret u didn't say yes to this guy"
everyday is the same

Does The Lotus Shrink Away For Everyone?

(after A.G. Visser)

Early every evening after I see my neighbour driving away
an expensive car stops on the sidewalk,
there’s an old legend that returns to me

when the sultan Mirza Khan goes on a pilgrimage
with many knights
on his way to Ispahan with his caravan

and he’s just left when the neighbour’s wife rushes past
without loosing a moment.
Early every evening after I see my neighbour driving away

where in the darkness of night he leaves
to be involved with his commitments
with many knights,

while the winter wind cuts through me,
the gaze of the neighbour’s wife chills the leaving car,

Journey to Paradise

She was a queen of the old Levant,
Of a country, lost in shame,
Each page, blood-drenched of its history
Was burnt, to bury its name,
The King had gone on the last Crusade
With his knights to the Holy Land,
But locked her into a chastity belt
Forged by a blacksmith's hand.

But Queen Fatima, known as ‘The Bitch'
Was a testy-tempered whore,
She raged and ranted at everyone
And chafed at the chains she bore,
She sent in search of the blacksmith to
Disable the King's device,
But word came back that the man was hung
So he'd never work it twice.

The King was away for three long years,
Fatima's tongue was a lash,

Bridges (For Fatima)

I meandered in a leonine grace
Supercilious with ambiguity
That terrorizes the smoldering scripts
Of the poetry that ferries me
And there you were on the other end
With a flair of a snake charmer
Or the hobbling of a belly dancer
Inebriating all my suffocations
By building bridges
To cross the angry oceans
Of reticent finagling
Now, you've touched
My regal delusions.

You are a lady of the desert
Dear Fatima, you are a topaz
In a chalcedony of coals
And that is all
That you are.
That was all

The Miracle of the Sun at Fatima, Portugal, Oct 13th,1917

The sun stood still in the horizon clear,
And looked as bright as one, they all had seen;
But they could look at it without fear,
Sans blinking, delighted by its sheen.
This lasted but a moment, then!

And as the multitude gazed
The sun began to dance
And whirled rapidly and dazed
Like a giant fire-wheel!
After sometime, it stopped.

It rotated again with speed
Increasingly, making the on-lookers dizzy;
And from its crimson rim arose
Blood-red streamers of flame in sky
That touched all things on earth
In a colourful bright spectrum.

Three times, the sun gyrated thus;

Fatima Bhanu Banu

Observe the coolness in noon
If you are so fond of afternoon
That is the greatness of sun
Where everybody makes great run

Not all the objects are noticed
But sun and moon are always promised
As I came across one great such aspect
I need to express it well in fine act

India stands well in universal eye
With her size and progressive try
Lot more to perform and lot more to excel
There is more to reveal and tell

Maria, Fatima, Yeshoda* and Vasundhra*
And many more names may appear as an extra
All are praised and appreciated in their holy context
Some find big praise and even poems in text

Sister Fatima

The spirit of Fatima still rules the Earth
She knows your future, she knows what it's worth
Sister Fatima has God-given powers
And on 42nd Street a shop that sells flowers
Is her palace, come and be healed
She knows all your business, your health and your ills
She'll counsel your weddings, divorces and wills
For full restoration five dollars an hour
And with each consultation a free holy flower
And if she likes you, well you can have two
And I came from nowhere like you and your friend
My searching and wandering went on without end
My future was dim, my spirit was crushed
In one sacred moment my questions were hushed
I'm a servant of fate in this garden of truth
A humble recruit of the taffeta booth
Where all things are known but few are revealed
Sins are forgotten and sickness is healed
For five dollars the flower is free

What Happened / Eye Of Fatima

It's recording?
...Clock says half past one
I have no sunglasses
As I step into the sun
I know I did something
Lord what could it be
Woke up in the morning
And all my friends hate me
She got the Eye of Fatima
In the wall of his room
Three bottles of Tequila
Three cats and a broom
He got a 15-year-old angel
And she's all dressed in black
He got 15 bindles of cocaine
Tied up in a sack
This here's a government experiment
And we're drivin' like hell
We'll get some cowboys on acid
And stay in motels

Eye Of Fatima

(its recording...)
the clock says half past one.
i have no sunglasses as i step into the sun.
lord knows i did something.
oh what could it be?
woke up in the morning and all my friends hate me....
she's got the eye of fatima
on the wall of a hotel room.
three bottles of tequilla, 3 cats and a broom.
he's got a 15 year old angel and she's all dressed in black.
she's got 15 bindles of cocaine tied up in a sac.
this here's a government experiment, and were driving like hell.
to get some cowboys on acid.
and to stay in motels.
were gonna eat up some wide open space like it were the top of the nile.
the hands on the clock are gunna be here, awhile.
an eye of, the eye of fatima.
in the wall of ahotel room,
and cowboys on acid are like egyptian carttons.
noone ever conquored wyoming from the left, or from the right.
