The Shut-Eye Sentry

Sez the Junior Orderly Sergeant
To the Senior Orderly Man:
"Our Orderly Orf'cer's ~hokee-mut~,
You 'elp 'im all you can.
For the wine was old and the night is cold,
An' the best we may go wrong,
So, 'fore 'e gits to the sentry-box,
You pass the word along."

So it was "Rounds! What Rounds?" at two of a frosty night,
'E's 'oldin' on by the sergeant's sash, but, sentry, shut your eye.
An' it was "Pass! All's well!" Oh, ain't 'e drippin' tight!
'E'll need an affidavit pretty badly by-an'-by.

The moon was white on the barricks,
The road was white an' wide,
An' the Orderly Orf'cer took it all,
An' the ten-foot ditch beside.
An' the corporal pulled an' the sergeant pushed,
An' the three they danced along,

Crack Down

In the chiaroscuro
Raven fatefully stepped, heard a cracking-
Having crushed a human being
like a snail crossing a sidewalk
and for one fleeting eternal incarnation
became bone, crushed shell,
a formless mass.

C.S. Lewis

To those - and they are now the majority - who see human life merely as a development and complication of animal life all forms of behaviour which cannot produce certificates of an animal origin and of survival value are suspect. Friendship's cer¬tificates are not very satisfactory.

A Train Wreck Near Lovelost

Steam blasts out a torn boiler heart
Shredded metal thoughts ooze oil
Boxcar, Jackknife emotions, like twisted art
Screeching, cataclysmic noise; pressured, recoils,
from concrete, loco motive, memories
smashed against pillars of doubt
Irony here busts in a train of jeers
separated pieces from the Lovelost rail route
Iron gears rust in a rain of tears

Everything Is Broken

Glue, super glue, Elmer's glue
Duct tape, Scotch tape,
New, Coup deville, Elmer Fudd
strut late, Scotch hop

Industry Velcro, molten steel,
cement and plaster-of-Paris.
Gwyneth Kate Paltrow, bolt-on wheels,
repent and master Pari passu.

Adhesive binding, bonding agents,
sticky, clingy, gummy, tacky,
Cohesive windings, wonder patents,
quickie, swinging, chummy, wacky.

Fixed!

Painting an Inch Thick

The paint on my face is peeling
Too long without a fresh coat to
Cover up the blemish of mistaken

—identity—

People will see through
The raw, exposed grain of flesh
Much too real for

Aluminum-sided strangers
Weathering storms in happy hamlets
Hailing golf balls bouncing off

Simulated walls, chuting through
Spidered spouts of infantile
Disregard.

Garden Wedding

Bees were working the lavender
as a seagull flew in blue sky
red rose's perfume did wendan
the air scented breeze wafted by

Young couples prim in their proper
the elders stood off to the side
Photographer posed as poser
the beauty in beholders eye

Bees were working the lavender
as a seagull sang in new sky
the bride shoes rose color purpleness
her groom stumping rose white, near nye

Bees kept working the lavender
A seagull flew swiftly far sky
yellow rose dress bride surrendered
To her white knight with kiss, near fly

Poetry is Dead

Capital D.
Go to the bookstore if you don’t
Believe me
See if you can find the poetry
Way back in the back where
Most people seldom go
If you do find it, what
Do you see?

Frost and Dickinson and
Susan Polis Schutz
Oh, yes, Poetry is Dead.

Who killed it? And why?
We need to find the corpse
Get a sample of DNA
Re-construct a new being
A Poetry people can relate to
A Poetry people want to hear
A Poetry not only striking

All Hallows Even

Some people swore that the house was haunted
Rarely seen during bright sunlight
It was a case of a ghost that flaunted
Felines and weak constitutions given fright

Creaky doors and windows black
These gave the house old ailments and distrust
Inside floors wait, interior cracks
While the hinges, nails, fixtures red-rust

Dusk does play its fancy lace up under the rafters
Dark winds blowing and shadows lurk
Offering tricks of bleak disaster
The house cat-naps restless in the murk

Some People swore that the house was haunted
A fall winter's breeze did come to haunt
A frayed lace curtain was better the fact
Nothing was ever the same after that
