Quotes about amish

Amish Paradise

As I walk through the valley where I harvest my grain
I take a look at my wife and realize shes very plain
But thats just perfect for an amish like me
You know I shun fancy things like electricity
At 4:30 in the morning Im milkin cows
Jebediah feeds the chickens and jacob plows... fool
And Ive been milkin and plowin so long that
Even ezekiel thinks that my mind is gone
Im a man of the land, Im into discipline
Got a Bible in my hand and a beard on my chin
But if I finish all of my chores and you finish thine
Then tonight were gonna party like its 1699
We been spending most our lives
Living in an amish paradise
Ive churned butter once or twice
Living in an amish paradise
Its hard work and sacrifice
Living in an amish paradise
We sell quilts at a discount price
Living in an amish paradise

There can be no assumption that today's majority is ""right"" and the Amish and others like them are ""wrong."" A way of life that is odd or even erratic but interferes with no rights or interests of others is not to be condemned because it is different.

Dear Deborah,

They tell me that your heart
has been found in Iowa,
pumping along Interstate 35.
Do you want it back?

When the cold comes on
this fast, it's Iowa again--
where pollen disperses
evenly on the dented Fords,

where white houses sag
by the town's corn silos,
where people in the houses
sicken on corn dust.

Auctions sell entire farms.
It's not the auctions that's upsetting
but what they sell, the ragged towel
or the armless doll, for a dollar.

Mauve

She was sitting there on the porch steps
Reminiscing kisses and french crepes
When love knocked on my jaded door
As her Amish headdress flew high above the varnished floor

She was a lass from the twilight of Lancaster county
A bespectacled brunette my sweet amorous bounty
A lass with a shy grin and spontaneous unguarded eyes
A stork brought to my doorstep laden with her Amish ties

She is Mauve, always in her pale violet sundresses
With blossoming lavenders sprinkled on her tresses
With a skipping gait and magnetizing stare
As to the gods I parted with a thanksgiving prayer

She left her loved ones for a demi-year stint
With a promise to return, conveyed with a hint
Yet she met me, a lad from the serendipitous of isles
As love detonated in majestic stock piles

Amsterdam Brownies

There not my mother's specials
Though they'd give her quite a kicker
It packs a punch when you're a starter
Or an invalid, with Amish liver
Initiates I would administer
Biscuits with a pinch of hash
Than work towards the ganja cake
Which no conscience can pretend to fake
We'll strip the layers of black and white
To transcend colors of a mental flight
A first class ticket to a surrealist dance
Just bite your tongue if you must scream

Because you will be arriving into Eden

Upon the fjords up a river,
Were bicycles, are not much quicker.
Go down the Singel; a charming canal
That flows like champagne inside a well
Spot the antiques from old Orange days

A C*******s - well, OK, seasonal - plea..

Art brings a smile and a message.
Thus the art of ‘Christmas’ cards…
(and I use the word loosely,
as its public use is now disapproved…)

A folded card: that’s four smallish sides to fill.
An appropriate seasonal smile on Page One;
Page Two requires nothing,
blank but room for something else to say
in lieu of that family catch-up print-out page
your children will have helped with; or maybe not..

Page Three offers a seasonal message – but
watch out these days – ‘you can’t use
THAT for THEM…’ oh of course, they’re,
what exactly? Crypto-Buddhists?
Lapsed Amish? Richard Dawkins and
his, er, dour or smiling family ?

Page Four – the great let-out

Chirping

I have a story to tell. A familiar one of a kind tale.
Colored by pigment and biased with a name.
Breeding contempt or some other monstrous thing
in hearts that pump fear as if it was life itself.

It's a story that comes in pieces, chunks or ragged whole
cloth, though it can seem stitched into a tapestry, or
quilted by an Amish maiden fresh as this morning's hay
and full of lies.

It's a story that cracks my voice.
About the cost of freedom.
About these wounds in my arms
bleeding secrets I once kept,
staining my bones like a Maori tattooing ceremony.

It is a story about blind alleys.
About mountains and trails meant for goats.
About walking in light and shade.
Learning to live in the light
