Quotes about amends

Being Boring

(tennant/lowe)
---------------
I came across a cache of old photos
And invitations to teenage parties
Dress in white one said, with quotations
From someones wife, a famous writer
In the nineteen-twenties
When youre young you find inspiration
In anyone whos ever gone
And opened up a closing door
She said: we were never feeling bored
cause we were never being boring
We had too much time to find for ourselves
And we were never being boring
We dressed up and fought, then thought: make amends
And we were never holding back or worried that
Time would come to an end
When I went I left from the station
With a haversack and some trepidation
Someone said: if youre not careful

Three Marching Songs

REMEMBER all those renowned generations,
They left their bodies to fatten the wolves,
They left their homesteads to fatten the foxes,
Fled to far countries, or sheltered themselves
In cavern, crevice, or hole,
Defending Ireland's soul.
Be still, be still, what can be said?
My father sang that song,
But time amends old wrong,
All that is finished, let it fade.
Remember all those renowned generations,
Remember all that have sunk in their blood,
Remember all that have died on the scaffold,
Remember all that have fled, that have stood,
Stood, took death like a tune
On an old,tambourine.
Be still, be still, what can be said?
My father sang that song,
But time amends old wrong,
And all that's finished, let it fade.

Homer

The Iliad: Book 9

Thus did the Trojans watch. But Panic, comrade of blood-stained
Rout, had taken fast hold of the Achaeans and their princes were all
of them in despair. As when the two winds that blow from Thrace- the
north and the northwest- spring up of a sudden and rouse the fury of
the main- in a moment the dark waves uprear their heads and scatter
their sea-wrack in all directions- even thus troubled were the
hearts of the Achaeans.
The son of Atreus in dismay bade the heralds call the people to a
council man by man, but not to cry the matter aloud; he made haste
also himself to call them, and they sat sorry at heart in their
assembly. Agamemnon shed tears as it were a running stream or cataract
on the side of some sheer cliff; and thus, with many a heavy sigh he
spoke to the Achaeans. "My friends," said he, "princes and councillors
Of the Argives, the hand of heaven has been laid heavily upon me.
Cruel Jove gave me his solemn promise that I should sack the city of
Troy before returning, but he has played me false, and is now
bidding me go ingloriously back to Argos with the loss of much people.
Such is the will of Jove, who has laid many a proud city in the dust
as he will yet lay others, for his power is above all. Now, therefore,
let us all do as I say and sail back to our own country, for we

II. Half-Rome

What, you, Sir, come too? (Just the man I'd meet.)
Be ruled by me and have a care o' the crowd:
This way, while fresh folk go and get their gaze:
I'll tell you like a book and save your shins.
Fie, what a roaring day we've had! Whose fault?
Lorenzo in Lucina,—here's a church
To hold a crowd at need, accommodate
All comers from the Corso! If this crush
Make not its priests ashamed of what they show
For temple-room, don't prick them to draw purse
And down with bricks and mortar, eke us out
The beggarly transept with its bit of apse
Into a decent space for Christian ease,
Why, to-day's lucky pearl is cast to swine.
Listen and estimate the luck they've had!
(The right man, and I hold him.)

Sir, do you see,
They laid both bodies in the church, this morn
The first thing, on the chancel two steps up,

Inevitable

The setting sun as daylight fades,
before the dark of night descends.
Must paint the clouds in pastel shades
almost as if to make amends.

Before the dark of night descends.
Soft hues of various shades and grades,
make valiant efforts to defend
their last stronghold from darkness’ raids.

Must paint the clouds in pastel shades
in vain attempt which won’t extend
the closing of the day’s parade.
Today as all days has to end

Almost as if to make amends.
The night winds softly serenade
Mark the beginning of the end,
the fall of night cannot be stayed.

Late Spring

I

Ah, who will tell me, in these leaden days,
Why the sweet Spring delays,
And where she hides, -- the dear desire
Of every heart that longs
For bloom, and fragrance, and the ruby fire
Of maple-buds along the misty hills,
And that immortal call which fills
The waiting wood with songs?
The snow-drops came so long ago,
It seemed that Spring was near!
But then returned the snow
With biting winds, and all the earth grew sere,
And sullen clouds drooped low
To veil the sadness of a hope deferred:
Then rain, rain, rain, incessant rain
Beat on the window-pane,
Through which I watched the solitary bird
That braved the tempest, buffeted and tossed,

One Mad Summer...

On the shores of Lake Geneva
Stood a carriage, black, japanned,
Bearing symbols of the lineage
Of the owner's ancient lands,
To the Villa Deodati
He had fled, without his books,
To avoid the literati
And their disapproving looks.

From a humble, fraught beginning
And a mother he despised
He'd succeeded to the title
When his wicked Uncle died,
And he'd scribbled in his youth a tract
That caught the public eye,
Full of rant and young bravura
That had made the women sigh.

But an overnight sensation hadn't
Helped defeat his gloom,

From Bare Despair Prepare Rare Future Fair

Strangers in strange lands where nature's maps
are daily altered: who can tell, perhaps
utopian dreams may one day be fulfilled -
what wishes we project with one 'perhaps'!

But that 'perhaps' with other minds must be
shared or entrusted till eternity
when bell and tale are told, both drum and gong,
before too long all meet their destiny.

Another week ticks off its finite hours,
last leaves weak fall, distressed are hedgerows, bowers,
no rainbow reign, polluted heaven spans
streams as polluted, mole in burrow cowers.

Today tomorrow's fears must count the cost,
of vested interests, while, with fingers crossed,
fire, freeze turn topsy-turvy, climates change,
strategic opportunities are lost.

Making Amends

We have learned so much from
The struggles overcome
We have gained some friends
Some have done us wrong
Cant you see, better make some room for me
What should we do, to live up to you
Why, why, why, why
You better live you life
What is wrong and what is right
Dont you talk too much
You got to back it up
Dont burn your candle from both ends
Now you gots to make amends
Imma see that sunshine surely ease my mind
Birds singin on a line
Made me feel so fine
Cant you see, better make some room for me
What should we do
To live up to you
Why, why, why, why

Unsettled Ways

Forgive me my unsettled ways
Dont linger in time or finger whats mine
Dont make me do
What you wouldnt do yourself
Forgive me the bad things I do
Dont ask me to change or exchange what I am
For something else
You know that wouldnt do
If time gets to heavy and you can no longer bear it
And you need someone to share it
Tell me girl, Ill try to make amends
Forgive me the ways of my heart
Dont try to pretend or lend me your love
Dont ask of me
What you wouldnt ask yourself
If time gets to heavy and you can no longer bear it
And you need someone to share it
Tell me girl, Ill try to make amends
Forgive me my unsettled ways
Dont linger in time or finger whats mine
