I have been dairy free for several years, and I started because I felt it was going to reduce my allergies, which it did, and help me lose weight, which it did.

Even With A Prescription

As I sat nestled amongst the weeds,
I remember how high I use to get.
But these days I have grown to have allergies.
And coughing to sneeze with just one puff,
Disturbs me much.

Just knowing what I use to do to sneak,
To please me quietly...
Has now been legalized on many city streets.
And even with a prescription from a doctor,
This stuff I can no longer touch.

Although it is everywhere.
And within reach.

My friend Sweeney

the roaring laughter
ridiculous tales
sold as the truth

he was unstoppable

those evenings at the hearth
we exchanged views
between a bottle of whiskey

as the mellow drink settled inside us
and the last red embers died

i saw his face damp and the heartbreak
of a thousand Irish families in it

rubbing he complained about allergies
telling me a limerick and cracking the seal
of another good label

Sweet potato muffin cake,
What is it going to take...
For you to let me get,
Another hug and squeeze?

I promise the next time,
Not to sneeze and cough.
My allergies flared up...
Just when you took your sweater off.
Who knew I was allergic to cashmere?

he cannot imagine himself
now
swallowing from pill to pill
his stomach
becoming more like
a pharmaceutical
storage cabinet

numb arms
another pill for his
acidic stomach
more pills for him
to sleep

throat infection
another one for his

side effects of some

A Story Of A Delicate Man

he is the delicate man
he brings an umbrella
even when there is no rain coming
he is the kind
that makes sure everything is in order
his shirt well folded
his shoes well polished
his notes in folders
his table dust free
his anti-allergies ready
until he lost
everything pleasurable in his life

until he ages
and now he goes back to the places
he misses
gathering all the flowers
along the pathways
plucking each one of them
but his nose cannot smell anymore

When the Body Starts to Go Broke...

you complain of flu
time has now asked for an accounting
how your body is used
how is it abused
with so much work
and thoughts and stress and
waste

you think about drugs
and the possibility of a vaccine

i say there is more to it
we don't live by drugs alone
or bread
there is more to this tired body
this restless mind

ask your heart
