Solomon on the Vanity of the World, A Poem. In Three Books. - Power. Book III.

The Argument

Solomon considers man through the several stages and conditions of life, and concludes, in general, that we are all miserable. He reflects more particularly upon the trouble and uncertainty of greatness and power; gives some instances thereof from Adam down to himself; and still concludes that All Is Vanity. He reasons again upon life, death, and a future being; finds human wisdom too imperfect to resolve his doubts; has recourse to religion; is informed by an angel what shall happen to himself, his family, and his kingdom, till the redemption of Israel; and, upon the whole, resolves to submit his inquiries and anxieties to the will of his Creator.

Come then, my soul: I call thee by that name,
Thou busy thing, from whence I know I am;
For, knowing that I am, I know thou art,
Since that must needs exist which can impart:
But how thou camest to be, or whence thy spring,
For various of thee priests and poets sing.

Mind Games

Swaami Vivekaananda describes
the restless, vain, vindictive human mind
as monkey: agile, watchful, quick to move,
yet never quite at rest. And worse, we find -

intoxicated: selfish, full of pride,
that agile mind sent spinning into pain,
the boundless universe turned tiny box,
Man's measure never known. And worse again -

this cunning, drunken monkey's angry; stung
by his own scorpion bite: and so invents
his bitter enemies, their role assigned;
the human race divided by...our mind.

And thus the mindful Swaami with fine grace
reminds us - we're that godly human race...

Brown and Agile Child

Brown and agile child, the sun which forms the fruit
And ripens the grain and twists the seaweed
Has made your happy body and your luminous eyes
And given your mouth the smile of water.

A black and anguished sun is entangled in the twigs
Of your black mane when you hold out your arms.
You play in the sun as in a tidal river
And it leaves two dark pools in your eyes.

Brown and agile child, nothing draws me to you,

In a rural district God has created the most lovely rose

In a rural district God has created the loveliest rose
where the hillocks in the distance touches the sky,
she sprouts out in the veldt
and skip springbok agile as if no man can master her.

In her kitchen there are batches of rusks
and the outer door is locked
until the last baking pan comes out of the oven,
where visitors then rush to get some as booty

and when you visit her you have to be watch your wits
or she will twist you around her little finger
as she’s a vixen, who confuses every suitor
and her beauty leaves everyone dumbstruck

and her teasing overlooks nobody
as form far she has many visitors
bringing gifts and every kind of flower
that she takes at times or do not accept at all

Together Well Die

Madness is fragile and fragile is she
In chaos shes agile and madness is me
We knew from the beginning it wasnt alright
Like being in a padded room for more than one night
Judgment escaped me I speak for us both
Like the bond that we made we call it an oath
Together we will live
Together well die
Filled with the confidence of nothing to loose
Armed with an axe and a whole lot of booze
Plans were made down to each detail
With a plan like that how could we fail
We packed all our gear in the trunck of my brothers car
cause time is running out says the clock on the wall
